By COLlive reporters in Crown Heights
Independent candidate Yossi Hackner won Tuesday’s runoff elections, with a sweeping win of 1659 votes in the race for the Vaad Hakohol – Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, the non-profit in charge of communal affairs.
The 28 year-old real estate agent who campaigned for a “Machlokes-free community” was endorsed by the other 2 candidates both known for their partisan affiliation.
Hackner did not bother to return the favor to either of them, telling COLlive.com: “If I say anything I can only cause damage. I’ll work with anyone who gets elected.”
That left the real rivalry to be between incumbent Chairman of the Vaad Fishel Brownstein and Rabbi Shea Hecht , both with known party affiliation (the first with the messianics and the second with the Chabad establishment).
Tammuz 24 was Brownstein’s 59th birthday, and a larger than expected turn out of voters on a sizzling summer day gave the accountant and father of 11 a kind gift of 43 votes over Hecht.
His win will be seen as a somewhat of a continuity to his administration which came under fire for some of its policies.
But in a statement to COLlive following his win, Brownstein wrote: “I look forward to serving the entire community, along with my newly-elected colleagues. I especially thank those who voted for me–twice. To those who did not: I hope to win your confidence in the coming years with my actions.
“As a reelected representative of the Rebbe’s community, I take this propitious time to elicit brochos from the Eibershter that we succeed in moving ahead together as ‘one man with one heart’.”
July 6’s runoff election was held after only one candidate (Zaki Tamir) got 50% of the Jewish male vote. The ballot opened at 8 AM and was closed at 12 AM with Monsey Rabbi Avrohom B. Rosenberg overseeing the process.
With reporters on site, COLlive provided ongoing updates. 1778 people participated (12 of them were challenged and their ballots were put into separate envelopes, until their eligibility is determined).
The final numbers were 1659 for Hackner, 947 for Brownstein and 904 for Hecht.
Only 13 votes were disqualified during the count. Rabbi Rosenberg said Hecht could make a legitimate request for a recount, but he doubts it will make any difference.
1766 ballots reached the ballot box, Rabbi Rosenberg told COLlive Wednesday morning in an email detailing the tally of the ballet box:
851 ballots Brownstein-Hackner
808 ballots Hackner-Hecht
96 ballots Brownstein-Hecht
6 invalid ballots that had all three names
4 invalid ballots that had only one name
1 empty ballot
1 ballot that a determination needs to be made if the voter voted for two or for all three.
This gives us a total of 1767 ballots in the ballot box (a discrepancy of one ballot).
The actual votes are 1659 for Hackner, 947 for Brownstein and 904 for Hecht.
Chairman-elect Zaki Tamir, who backed Hecht, told COLlive.com after hearing the results: “I made my case for Shea but the people have chosen Fishel, and I accept that with a full heart. I know Shea will stand by his commitment to help in community affairs and work well with us with or with-out title of council.”
Tamir added that “I love Fishel and have always worked well with him and Hackner.”
Hecht, chairman of the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE), said in a statement: “To all who supported me and shared my vision of bringing a new change to our community – I thank you. Yesterday, the residents voted for those they wish to serve them.
“While it was my hope to serve the community in this position, I respect the outcome of the elections. I would like to wish the new vaad much Hatzlocha. I will continue to do all I can to serve the Crown Heights Community.”
yashar koach to you!!!!
i completely agree!
122 comments! lol!
i luv reading some of these comments they are so funny especially when ppl take things so personaly!!!!!!!
IT IS NOT A FUNNY AND ABSURD COMMENT!! IT IS SO TRUE!!!
this following email will make things clear for all: Bs”d Here are the results of yesterday’s runoff election. Based on tickets distributed 1778 people participated. 12 of them were challenged and their ballots were put into separate envelopes, until their eligibility is determined. That leaves us with 1766 ballots that reached the ballot box. The tally of the ballet box are as follows. 851 ballots BRAUNSTEIN-HACKNER. 808 ballots HACKNER-HECHT 96 ballots BRAUNSTEIN-HECHT 6 invalid ballots that had all three names 4 invalid ballots that had only one name 1 empty ballot 1 ballot that a determination needs to be made… Read more »
It seems that either you lost a din Torah or you just couldn’t work things out. Rabbi Bogmilsky has helped many ppl personally, money wise, advice. including the Gmach, that he runs for Anash in CH etc At issue: This gmach has been summoned to court by the previous vaad hakohol including Brownsten who has never asked public apology from all the families that have invested in this gmach which was eternalized in the memory of their loved ones and has not removed the mesira. His being elected now is a chance of tshuva for him to correct this act… Read more »
Mazal Tov Tamir, Hackner and Brownstein on your election!
May you be very successful in bringing trust , harmony and prosperity to our community. The success of the community should be an example and inspiration to the world.
Just the preparations and planning should be enough to usher in the Geula Hoamitis VeHashleimo right away!
Hatzlocho.
I think one main point that all voters wanted to prove that Poltrack etc. was a no no! The only problem is: Once someone was once in office – we “can’t get rid of them” later! They will appear later at every photo opportunity.
Not just Poltrack, the same applies to Noochei Grosss, JB Speilman, Yossi Brook (in his time). I’m sure we will still see Chanina Sperlin.. (so whats the point)?!
Thats just the way it is…
Now we can have Hendel control our community for another 3 years,
#18… whatever is right…
Isn’t Garelick the front-runner? He is OK and kosher too.
Have most of you forgot that we are in the 3 weeks now, when we are suppose to increase our Ahavas Yisrael? Its very disturbing to see the comments above, where everybody is bad mouthing each other, what good does it do?
The elections happened, the people spoke, now its time to move on! Complaining about it and bad mouthing people, will not help the situation! There are bigger problems in the world and in this community, that we should be focused on.
Moshiach Now!
Mazal Tov to the new Vaad.
And maybe the fact that those who weren’t on “sides” (ie, Tamir & Hackner) got the most votes be a lesson to us. May achdus win!
Some people quit helping out community bc of the last election results which he didnt like… Shea wont stop bc of this bc hes in it for the right reasons
After the vote – my opinion is: The race between Brownstein vs Hecht WAS a tight one. Perhaps bit more people voted for Brownstein because he is not a “Hecht”, just a plain nice guy. (Eventhough people feared that he is affiliated somewhat to the Mendy Hendel Tzafati group (who people from BOTH sides don’t treally like)). In the long run – I think that the new Vaad Hakohal IS a nice group – with a fresh start. Brownstein will also want to show that he is a self made individual (not just listening to Mendy Hendel’s orders). Hackner is… Read more »

“BROWNSTEIN ONLY WANTS THE MONEY AND POWER”
If you’d know anything about Fishel Brownstein, you would know how funny and absurd that comment is!
Brownstein got 1016 last time around (plus three in the recount) that makes 1019 votes, and this time around only 947, that means that 72 peaple that already voted for him could not make it this time around (most probebly in the mountains).
Heacht got 936 last time, and this time 904 a difference of 32 votes that already votes for him but did not make it this time.
that means that Brownstein had more people in the mountains then Heacht, but still manged to win!
the people really chose Brownstein!
Mazel Tov!
intresting .. with all the support and he still could not win…. says something about who CH trusts…
brownstein didnt win .he is only a puppet for hendel poltract slavin sperlin .he will do whatever they say .they will pull his strings and he will dance .i hope zaki and hackner will not let those guys have any say .
how are you calling brownstien obama???!!!
why did everybody all of a sudden deside that he was terrible do you know him
he is a good man and will continue to do good things for this community
I know some of you will tell me how can I put women down, but I have a better solution, from my understanding the Rebbe wasn’t for having women on the vaad, and therefore don’t want women to vote, so why don’t we set up a womens commitee where only women can vote and they can work with vaad on certain projects, but they won’t be in vaad and won’t make decisions, but a womens voice will be heard and vaibeshe zachen will be taken care of with the budget the vaad gives them
Just a thought
WhenFishel lost in the first election a few weeks ago no one wrote that he almost lost. A loss is a loss is a loss. Menachem Begin won his first election by 1 seat. he was asked how he feels that he won by “only” one seat. He answered that in a democracy one seat makes it a majority.
Here too Fishel won by 43 seats. he won and Hecht lost. There is no need to spin this. More people wanted Fishel then Shea.
Lets get a move on and support our new vaad.
This election cycle was mard with vicious false propaganda! These allegations of yours are PATENTLY FALSE! Please read the letter for Rabbi Rosenberg – below – dated 27 Sivan. You will see that the last vaad signed a stipulation to remove EVERYTHING from court 1 WEEK after the Psak Din. It was Katzman and Co. that wanted to delay it…. their reasoning has become crystal clear: they wanted to wait until the elections so they can FALSELY scream on-to of their lungs about so-called mesira… what a shame… here is Rabbi Rosenbergs letter in full! Regarding the Bais Din order… Read more »
B”H over %70 of the community voted! and thats for a recount! its great to c people care, and want the best for the community!
and for all the mountainairs…. both shea and fisheel and yossi got a decent number of votes the first time around, I am sure of the other 300 that voted last time around that were not here now figured its ok either way…. (many may have actualy voted for them all the first time around anyone that reaaly cared was there! %70 strong!
I believe there is a great chance that these 3 elected members can work fairly well with each other for the betterment of our holy shcuna.
…unless people get involved and manipulate, concoct wars and strife…
the greates gift to crown heigts.
I am in the country with some family and friends and we would have definitely voted for Brownstein and Hackner.
Just wait until people gets involved and bring bitter division amongst the members of the vaad…
PLEASE, stay away from these people and let them do the best job they can.
How can you run elections during the Summer when
people are using this time to vacation away from
Crown Heights and are not physically present to Vote…
besides the fact that Women were not allowed to vote ?
Women are part of the Shchuna and are responsible for
the Spiritual Chinuch of our children and ultimately the
families that will settle in Crown Heights. People have
become so disallusioned with the whole election
process and are seeking REAL leadership.
its messed up and shovanist that women cant vote- we dontl ive in the 1940’s
Mazal tov Hendel, Sperlin & Polterak
One year ago when all those candidates were running for Vaad, Brownstein was not aligned with any of them. He had no history with them, didn’t endorse any of them, and wasn’t endorsed by any of them. The 4 who were elected came together and decided that for the betterment of the community they were going to settle on an agenda of bringing the Rabbonim together for a Din Torah and cleaning up the financial books of the CHJCC. They with the help of others accomplished much toward those goals. Brownstein has no long standing allegiances to those people except… Read more »
“(the first with the messianics and the second with the Chabad establishment).”
With Obama and now Brownstein in office, all Yidden should wake up and realize that it is time to make aliyah. We have to leave this dreadful golus in Crown Heights and realize that our real place — the only place that is really safe — is Eretz Yisroel. The Rebbe spoke many times about the importance of going to Israel and to never leave. Now is the time, people! Don’t you see what the future will be like for your kids if you remain in Crown Heights? The Mishichistim are turning 770 into a museum, the JCC is turning… Read more »
But I was sure the he will win. B”h he did. Its shocking that Hecht got so much votes. I guess Propaganda helps.
Bronstein is a good man. Its good that both sides got in. Now there is a chance Iy”h.
If everyone must vote two people then putting all the votes for all the candidates together, and dividing that by half would be the amount of counted ballots. But doing that I realised that only 1755 ballots were counted. 24 down from the 1779 that were put in!
We are a shiur who basically were for Shea. We decided to follow the majority. Then we heard Rabbi Bogomilskys dvar Torah. Then J>B Spielman’s tirade. Finally, we saw certain pictures. All 31 voted for Bronstein, [against our will.]
You’re right that there are voters missing but not 21 like you say. The arithmetic actually works out as follows: 1659 + 947 + 904 = 3510. Since each voter had to vote for 2, that means there were 1755 valid voters (3510 / 2 = 1755). 13 votes out of 1779 were disqualified leaving 1766 (you’re right on that). 1766 – 1755 = 11. Therefore, there are 11 missing voters.
if you want any sholom honesty and integrity in the shchuna or for that matter in Lubavitch stay Faaaaaaaaaaaar away from that man. Either you are too young or have your head in the sand.
As they say – ‘May The Best Man Win’. I hope you go far to bring peace to the whole neighborhood, and make the Vaad Hakohol truly an organization that is for the good of ALL the people.
Now it’s time to look to the future.
May Hashem bless you in all you do!
i understand that it should be one per household
but what about single women over 30?
what about divorcees and widows?
why shouldn’t they be represented?
People didn’t necessarily vote for Brownstein. But they sure voted against Hecht. He has been a thorn in our community for many years and probably continue to do so.
Let us hope there will be Sholom in our community.
He only got 43 less then Brownstein.
Had people not been upstate things might have gone a bit different.
If Shea only got 500 votes I would have to agree with you, but 43 less then the guy who did win is no message.
1) IT IS NOT FAIR, WE SHOULD DO A RECOUNT (THE VOTING MACHINES WERE NOT WORKING), IT IS SUMMER TIME AND ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE AWAY, WE SHOULD WAIT TILL ELUL WHEN EVERYBODY COMES BACK TO CROWN HEIGHTS. 2) SHEA HECHT SHOULD HAVE WON, HE KNOWS ALOT MORE ABOUT CROWN HEIGHTS THAN BROWNSTEIN AND SHEA HECHT HAS ALOT TO SHOW FOR US, BROWNSTEIN ONLY WANTS THE MONEY AND POWER, HE DOES NOT CARE AT ALL EVEN 1 BIT ABOUT CROWN HEIGHTS 3) RABBI BOGOMILSKY AS ROV OF CROWN HEIGHTS. 4) WHY DON’T THEY HAVE NORMAL REGULAR VOTING MACHINES (LIKE OTHER… Read more »
it’s great that Brownstein won and it’s a a shame that Zaki already had his first political blunder.
For those in the mountains who thought the election was important would have come back for the day to vote.
If 1,779 voters voted, and 13 were disqualified, we now have 1766 voters, all of whom had to vote for 2 candidates, we should have had a total of 3532 votes cast. When you add all the votes cast for all the candidates, 1659 + 947 + 904 you get 3510 votes not 3532 so there are 22 votes (11 voters) missing! Fact is even if you add all the “missing” votes to Hecht, he still would have lost, but these missing votes lead one to wonder what else went wrong during the counting, were votes changed? Were votes for… Read more »
The only reason I voted for Shea is because you supported him, I’m loving this!!!!!
“good name”?! He was a party to the subpoena on a gmach and Simchas Shabbos V’yom Tov, as yet still in force. Scared of the scrutiny, people have withdrawn funds and now there is much less to distribute.
He was also actively involved in the break in at the Badatz office with his fellow electees (Poltorak etc).
Thank G-d enough people in the Community have some common sense and saw through hate, Fishel is a good man.
The vote was close which just shows how divided the community is, I am confident that Mr. Brownstein will work with all sides.
The turnout was very high and in such a close election I don’t think you can really argue that of the 285 people that did not vote in this election (as opposed to last one) 165 (or 58%) of them would have voted for Shea over Fishel if they would have been in town.
What is wrong with YOU??? Boruch Hashem a million times over he didn’t get in!!! and I’m one who looked up to Shea until that fiasco on Lag B’omer. I guess there is still some justice in the world!!!
how would you vote for him?someone who puts out a letter that makes 0 sence!what did zimri do that fishel brownstien did???if anyone can vote for someone like that then thats very sad!
Then I guess you should have come down to vote.
If you didn’t vote and are unhappy with the outcome, you – and 14 others are to blame.
the real election was a few weeks ago when we threw out the old vadd. brownstein is still considered new to the scene, and pepole wanted to give him a chance.
this was not a maschis or anti fight.
And B”H my vote would not have made a difference because the right person won!
Shea may not have won officially, (what a real pity), but he does whatever he can to help a fellow yid, ALWAYS!!!!!
Hackner now has a real chance to show himself.
Brownstein never did anything until now. what will he do now? (continue as chaninas puppet?)
Soooo, Poltrack manages to push off the run off until many of Hechts supporters are in the country and cant vote, and then they win! wow, how did Rav Rosenberg let that happen?
then you should have come in, it’s only a 2 hour trip.
im really looking forward to this vaad WITH FISHEL!!!!
I WANTED SHEA AND HACKNER!!
Look, there were 1659+947+904=3510 votes counted. Since every ballot that was counted was supposed to have two votes, that means that 3510/2=1755 ballots were counted. 1779-1755=24 ballots were issued but not counted. Some were disqualified, some may simply have either put their ballot in the wrong place or got tired of waiting and walked out without voting or made a mistake marking their ballot and ripped it up rather than put it in the ballot box with a vote they didn’t want. Still, 24-13=11 missing ballots seems high to me. Anyway, 1755-1659=96 didn’t vote for Hackner. They must have voted… Read more »
endorsing Shea does not look so smart now, truth be told Fishel is such a mentch that i’m sure he forgave you already!
its early in the morning but ill take a crack at the math problem. it says 13 votes were disquielified but it really means 13 ballots or voters. so if most of those 13 voted for 3 people which would disquielify them that would make up for the discrepency.
regardless, I wanted hecht and brownsteint but let’s see if brownstein and hackner can prove themselves by bringing shalom and funding to CH.
Hecht would have put other things ahead of the community. It’s good he didn’t get in. Now he can concentrate on the good things he does.
Would have voted for Brownstein
The community has spoken.
Shea’s 904 votes, and Brownstein’s 947 together = 1851 now 1851 minus Hackners 1659 votes = 192 divide that in half = 96 for votes that were for Shea & Brownstein together. now Hackners 1659 votes plus the 96 for votes that were for Shea & Brownstein together = 1755 now If there were a total of 1779 votes minus the 1755 legitamate votes you are left with 24 votes of which 13 are diqualified. 24 minus 13 = 11 that means 11 votes are not accounted for? Not a difference for the results, but if the count is wrong… Read more »
first obama wins now bronstein (representing hendel ect.).. what are we coming to!!!!
Combined Brownstein & Hecht got 1851 votes Hackner got 1659. Please explain on your Oholei Torah level math how the count is wrong
With a leather Yarmulke???????? Dont ever say anything to me aagin about that. lol
Mazal Tov to Brownstein and Hackner
Very sad. Doing it while so many people were away makes no sense. We will all suffer now. The puppet masters have Thierry puppet in place.
Brownstein victory means more Chanina.
Don’t be a BT that gets sucked into the klipa of the renegade board you served on before.-Remember when you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas-from a BT-Haztloche
You’re so right, but let’s face it: the women are as fragmented as the men. We need to get together, find a REAL lawyer, & get the Vaad & CHJCC separated so we women can vote for secular leadership. This Vaad won’t get anything done now. Brownstein will stop anything that Poltorak & Hendel don’t want: he doesn’t have any backbone or moral conscience. We are in HUGE trouble. How much do you want to bet they go to Shea & ask him to open doors to politicians? If he has any common sense he’ll tell them to get lost.… Read more »
I ask the same question as number 20. With the thousands for oversight, we should have an exact number. I think we need a recount.
Advice to Yosel Katzman. Please step back far away from this new Vaad and allow them to do the job they were elected to do.
Newly re-elected vaad hakohol member Fishel Brownstein celebrated his 58th birthday yesterday (not 59th). Mazolo GoIver. יאריך ימיו על ממלכתו. העולה לגדולה מוחלין לו כל עונותיו
Great who got in…
Greater who the previous Vaad, got out…..
Was the previous Vaad able to finish a GREAT job they began, it would have been the best case scenario, (a HOME RUN.)
However, let’s not forget who they got rid of, three individuals that almost brought the Shchuna to its knees ר”ל
THE THREE OUT THE WINDOW.
(THIRD BASE HIT).
Now we hope they invite Chanina and Shea, to come in the front door to assist.

Whoever said your vote doesn’t count? EVERY VOTE COUNTS. Because of such an attitude, we lost a venerable candidate, whom most probably will never campaign again.
no. 23, and all the others in the mountains, so why didn’t you come into NY to vote?! You knew how important it was.
How can u say that?
Proof is… Hecht got into the Runoff elections…. and he was won by less than 50 votes. and u say CH doesn’t want him?? Who are you to speak?
if you cared for the shcuna that much you would have made it to ch
One of the biggest issues with the CH community is that women are seen as inferior. If community cohesion is what is needed, perhaps it might be an idea to include women in important decision making processes such as this. Never mind just being allowed a vote, which is irrefutable in my mind, perhaps there should also be women representatives on the council. At present, it seems that the only time attention is being given to women is when they are being vilified for Tznius issues – on which all of our problems are blamed. However, women play a huge… Read more »
1779 total ballots minus 13 invalid ballots equals 1766 valid ballots times 2 votes equals 3532 valid votes if you add up the total number of counted valid votes the sum is 3510 what happend to the missing 22 votes
to #10 & 13
i don,t understand what what you are talking about.if you add up shea,s votes of 904 & brownstein,s votes of 947 it comes out to 1851 votes & hackner got 1659 votes which means that if you add it up correctly it turns out that 192 people voted for shea & fishel & not for hackner.i hope this clears up any confusion that you may have.

Hay Yoosi, Go now and kick tuches.
it’s all mayse saton
you recount
explain yourself please
It looks like you didn’t pass 3rd grade math. 904+947+1659 is a little more then 3500 divided by two =1750 plus
What ever happend is for the good, stop negative comments.
I didn’t vote for Brownsteing, but H-shem desided… so we should all say “Mazel Tov”
there are 4 missing votes, or the final number 1779 was wrong but over here if u add all the numbers then divide by 2 it equals 1775 votes all together, i thought there were 1779??
oh well. but unfair
If people voted brownstein hecht its possible to get these numbers
Unfortunately, there is one of the mosrim people who won.
Do people get the leadership they deserve?
Shea Hecht will still be there though, helping as many people as he possibly can, has he has always done. I predict Crown Heights will wake up in a little while down the line and realize they chose the wrong man for the job. There will be major ‘voter’s regret’ similar to what happened with all those Obama voters.
and i would have voted for shea
go learn math or at least get a calculator
hackner did not get more then both put together
hecht is undermining the elected officials of the vaad hakohol for the past 24 years!!!, I hope he finally got the message that the ppl of C.H. DON’T want him
If there were a total of 1779 votes, minus 13 disqualified = 1766.
If Hackner got 1659 votes, that means 107 voted “Hecht-Bronstien” together.
Subtract 107 from Shea’s 904 votes, and Bronstien’s 947 to get the Hackner combinations:
Equals:
Hecht – Bronstien = 107
Hecht – Hackner = 797
Bronstien – Hackner = 840
1745 voters. (Not 1766.)
Where are the missing 21 voters?
It was so close that I believe Hecht would have won had those in the country not have been disenfranchised. But I guess that since the election was done today, so be it.
Whatever…
nice end to all of this
I am out of town as are a number of people that I know. We wanted to do absentee ballots and were told no. Shea, we are with you. Brownstein dont give us a reason to impeach you
Crown Heights did not overwhelmingly elect Shea Hecht? Then they deserve the poor leadership they get. They are surely a bunch of Chelmites
I Wanted shea in – azkir al hatzion.
If these numbers are right, there’s something wrong. It is mathematically impossible to get those numbers if everyone MUST vote 2 (not 1 and not 3). Anyone who passed 3rd grade mathematics could get this …
The entire process is unconstitutional and would be thrown out if challenged in court.
i think this shows how divided the community is.
half are for hecht, half for brownstien
how sad
Hackner got more votes than Bronstien and Shea put together.
That means there is an error here since anyone who voted for Hackner had to ALSO have voted for one of the others.
I demand a RECOUNT !!!
Finally, a little sanity! Everyone saw through all the pashkvilin and sent a resounding ‘FEH’ to T.O.L. Katzman and company. Good riddance!
Its a loss for Crown Heights that they did not get Shea, but I will now support this new vaad. I hope they bring sholom and accountability to this community.
Vote for Rabbi Zirkind as Rov
I sure hope that we can find at least 1-2 NON CONTROVERSIAL candidates for the elections for Rabbonim, ones that will not be voted on by party line…. is this just a fantasy?
Moshiach Now!
Yes, so he can send out scandalous letters against upstanding, chassidishe yungerlight? did he take Brownstein to a Din Torah before he attempted to DESTROY his very good name?
