Temperatures soared past the 100 degree mark Tuesday along much of the East Coast, as air conditioners strained to cool the sweating masses and the unlucky sought out cooling centers — or anywhere else they could beat the heat.
The heat wave claimed its first death Tuesday night. A woman in her 40s succumbed to the stifling temperatures.
Doctors did extensive work to save her, but it came too late. The 46-year-old woman from Queens died from heat-related causes. Her body temperature in the ER was 108 degrees.
Experts warn of symptoms of heat-related illness, which may start as heat exhaustion but can elevate into heat stroke, and victims are not always aware that they are in danger.
The elderly and young are particularly susceptible, and so are those who exercise in the heat. Symptoms include high fever, hot, dry skin and rapid heartbeat.
If you suspect heat exhaustion, get the victim to a cool place and give fluids and call 911 if the symptoms persist.
Hatzalah has issued a warning to check on friends and neighbors – especially the elderly – to be sure they are safe and are drinking enough fluids.
The heat wave is especially dangerous for the elderly, many of whom live alone.
In the event you cannot reach anyone, call Hatzalah to check on them.

they are not advisable because of their high sugar content and all the chemical colorants. You can buy dasani or similar products that have electrolites wothout the junk – which just ends up making you more thirsty and NG for the immune system. WATERMELON is chock full of electrolytes. Always have it in the fridge this time of year, and especailly beneficial before & after a Fast~! Obviously if someone is desperate for a drink, don’t wait for it to get dangerous…go ahead and give ’em gatorade. But better if you can plan ahead, that’s all.
i thought that powerade is the best because it has electrolites.
