In a constantly evolving world, TorahVR and The Shul of Bal Harbour are embracing innovation to bring the timeless wisdom of the Torah to a new generation. The exciting new initiative: a groundbreaking Parsha Series of virtual reality experiences is inspired by the vision and eternal legacy of Rabbi Sholom D Lipskar OBM.
Rabbi Lipskar, the legendary founder of The Shul, was a true visionary who consistently encouraged Jews to utilize the most cutting-edge tools available to spread the light of Torah, not just within his own community, but for Jews everywhere. It is in this spirit that TorahVR and The Shul are embarking on what may be the most impactful Torah project of the 21st Century.
Planning for this transformative project began over two years ago. At that time, Rabbi Lipskar OBM recognized the immense potential of virtual reality to revolutionize Jewish education and invited various companies and content creators to submit proposals for how this vision could be brought to life.
The plan was to leverage the power of Virtual Reality (VR) to create a series that would allow community members and students to not just read about the Torah’s most foundational stories but to experience them firsthand.
In the wake of the devastating terrorist attack on Simchas Torah, Rabbi Lipskar OBM, had to, unfortunately, shift his focus. His profound commitment to the Jewish people meant he had to dedicate his attention to helping Israel during its most vulnerable time. Despite the immediate need to address this tragedy, he never lost sight of this crucial project, insisting it would eventually come to life.
Even as other priorities demanded his attention, the Rabbi consistently checked in on the project’s progress. He saw in the re-awakening of the Jewish people a profound need to answer the question, “What does it mean to be a Jew?” and believed this initiative was the key.
He passionately insisted that Jews worldwide must be able to interact with their education in a new light, fostering a deep-seated pride in their Judaism and their Holy Land of Israel. These two points, pride in Jewish heritage and pride in the Jewish homeland, will be woven as central threads throughout the Parsha Series, a testament to his vision and enduring love for the Jewish people.
Inspired by his father’s vision and his father’s “Get It Done” marching orders, Rabbi Zalman Lipskar officially launched the project on Daled Av, the birthday of Rabbi Sholom Lipskar, as a tribute to his legacy.
The series is being created and distributed by TorahVR, a pioneering organization that has been at the forefront of Jewish education for the last half-decade. TorahVR produces and distributes interactive Jewish VR content to well over a hundred schools and tens of thousands of students globally.
The organization’s mission is to address the desperate need for engaging tools in Jewish education, particularly among teens, by creating interactive experiences that are both relevant and profoundly engaging. Their research shows that this experiential approach captures attention, fosters a deeper understanding of the material, and significantly improves retention—all while providing a “kosher-first” approach to technology.
The new Parsha Series will take this successful model to the next level. TorahVR is currently in production on the first experience, which will bring the Genesis story, the first half of Parshat Bereishis, to life. Participants will become a character within the story, interacting with the narrative in a deeply personal way. The content will be a rich blend of immersive storytelling and interactive elements, a format that has already proven highly effective in the dozens of VR experiences produced by TorahVR and used by students daily.
The series is designed for a diverse audience, from day school and Hebrew school students, to community members who seek a fresh and innovative way to engage with their weekly Torah portion. Educators will also be empowered with an immersive new tool to make their lessons tangible and memorable. As with all TorahVR content, this project is being developed in consultation with expert educators to ensure it is both impactful and aligned with core Jewish values.
“TorahVR has been an incredible tool at Ramaz and a great way for our students to get excited about parts of Torah they wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise,” says Rabbi Chaim Hagler, Judaic Studies Principal at Ramaz. “We’ve been using TorahVR and their text curriculum for a weekly course about the Beit Hamikdash, and the excitement has even spilled over into other classes.
Students came running to me to share how they had already become experts in parts of Chumash Vayikra due to their TorahVR lessons. For me, as an extreme visual learner, it was especially powerful to transition from reading written sources to feeling as though I had been there and seen it myself. After seeing the headsets during their first class, some students were bewildered, asking, ‘This is a class?’
He added that he “thinks Parsha is an unbelievable way to use TorahVR, and it’s something that schools are really going to be looking for. We certainly look forward to implementing it at Ramaz next year!”
“We’ve seen firsthand how TorahVR transforms learning at Pardes,” shares Rabbi Levi Druin, Principal of a Miami Beach Day School. “Torah is no longer something our students just read about; it’s something they genuinely experience. The content makes them feel as if they were present at the time, and they are always eager for their next opportunity to use TorahVR.”
Upon hearing about the upcoming Parsha Series, Rabbi Druin commented with great enthusiasm: “This series will bring excitement to every Shabbos and make the weekly Torah reading come alive. It will transition the stories from something that happened thousands of years ago to something they live through in the present. This will be better than any TV series or movie they watch, and TorahVR is absolutely the right team to bring this vision to fruition.”
The ultimate goal of each VR experience is not just to entertain, but to inspire. Upon completing the experience, the participant will be able to articulate and internalize how the Torah is relevant to modern Jewish life, thereby strengthening their concepts of Jewish pride, faith, Yiras Shomayim, and their commitment to acts of goodness and kindness.
This transformative series is being created in the highest quality available for modern VR headsets, with the team pushing the boundaries of what’s currently possible in the world of virtual reality. The project will also include filming in Israel, utilizing high-tech 3D camera equipment and drone footage, to capture the very locations where some of these stories take place.
The Shul has provided a generous grant to complete GenesisVR, the first experience in the series. This initial chapter will serve not only as a learning tool for students but also as a showcase to garner further support and sponsorships for future installments.
The series is being created in loving memory of Rabbi Sholom Dovber Lipskar OBM and his great legacy. His name and teachings will be honored throughout the series, ensuring that his vision continues to inspire and uplift for generations to come.
