By Rabbi Moshe Krasnanski, Montreal
Over 60 Lubavitcher bochurim and seminary girls who were stuck in Jordan for several days have finally landed in Washington, DC and returned home after spending five long days in Amman.
What began as an evacuation plan for American citizens turned into an unplanned five-day ordeal, which, though stressful at times, ultimately became a testament to the strength, resilience, and chinuch of our children.
The bochurim, studying at Yeshivas Tzeirei Hashluchim Mesivta in Tzfas, had worked very hard on a challenging mivtzah of learning and chassidishe hanhogos in honor of Yud Shvat. Those who passed were scheduled to leave this past Thursday for a trip to Georgia, FSU. However, when the war broke out on the Shabbos before Purim, the trip was cancelled.
The group of 30 boys reached out to an American rescue group led by Olivia and Bryan Stern, Chairman and Founder of Grey Bull Rescue, who promised to safely evacuate them through Jordan on a flight to Europe and from there to the USA. On Tuesday afternoon, Purim, they were taken to Jordan, where Brian arranged accommodations for them in a five-star hotel. However, they were unable to leave the hotel under any circumstances as an added measure of security.
The plan was for them to leave on Wednesday, when another group of 35 Bais Rivkah seminary girls would join them. The seminary girls had originally planned to leave Israel the Motzei Shabbos before Purim, but were unable to do so. Rabbi and Mrs. Chitrik of the Beis Chana Seminary in Tzfas very generously hosted the girls until they were able to fly home.
The group was scheduled to depart on Wednesday for Athens, Greece, but numerous complications kept delaying the Grey bull arranged flight. These included missiles flying over Jordan and airspace closures, among other issues. Wednesday turned into Thursday, and they went to the airport Thursday night in hopes of leaving for Athens and spending Shabbos there. The flight never took off due to timing issues, and they were brought back to the hotel, facing the prospect of spending Shabbos there.
Meanwhile, the boys and girls had very little food and were surviving on some snacks. Thanks to one of the people waiting for the flight with them, who kindly shared his cholov Yisroel chocolates, they had something to eat. The seminary girls were lifesavers, preparing a kosher meal with whatever limited items they had available. The kitchen was kashered and they got brand new equipment to cook.
Once it became clear that they would be staying for Shabbos, they needed proper food. Rabbi Sholom Duchman of Colel Chabad in Israel mobilized on Friday morning to arrange food for them, preparing a large amount since they had not eaten a proper meal in several days. Unfortunately, the Jordanian border authorities confiscated the food and threw it out, much to the dismay of Colel Chabad.
Once again, the girls came to the rescue and, maintaining the highest standards of kashrus, prepared food for Shabbos using the basic items they were able to obtain. Special thanks to Paullette Reines, of Lilis Kosher Catering, for taking charge using her unique catering background to make all the kosher food happen.
When Rabbanim were consulted and the students were told that Shabbos could be broken to rescue them because it was a safek pikuach nefesh, the boys and girls, though hungry, anxious, and exhausted from sleepless nights, did not want to break Shabbos. In fact, it was incredible how careful they were, asking many halachic questions during their stay and not compromising on anything.
They kept their spirits high throughout, even in a place where they had to remain so discreet. It was a Shabbos filled with chayos, davening, singing, and Shabbos meals. We thank the incredible Shluchim group of the Yeshiva and the Madrichot of the seminary for their dedication and care.
We are grateful to Brian and Olivia Stern of Grey Bull for looking after their safety, while trying to make the rescue happen.
On Friday, Ari Tamari and Mendy Schreiber reached out to Ambassador Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun, a dear friend of President Donald Trump, who immediately mobilized the American government to help our children and the others with them.
We thank Rabbi Yehudah Kaploun, President Trump, Secretary of State Marc Rubio, and the US Ambassador to Jordan, James Holtsnider, along with his wonderful team led by Rocco Costa, who ensured that after Shabbos they would finally board a plane back home. They have successfully evacuated over 24,000 individuals, and we wanted to make sure our children were safely on US soil.
On Motzei Shabbos, they boarded a Royal Jordanian flight and landed this morning at Dulles Airport in Washington, DC.
We thank Rabbi and Mrs. Faijnland from Virginia, who have organized a bus to greet them with a warm and delicious breakfast—their first real meal since the ordeal began nearly a week ago—and help them continue home to New York.
We also thank the Lieutenant Governor of Florida, Jay Collins, who was involved behind the scenes, trying to coordinate with Grey Bull. We thank Tzvi Bogomilsky for his connection to Jay Collins. We also thank Yaacov Behrman of the Jewish Future Alliance for his assistance.
We thank Rabbi Sholom Goldstein of Bais Rivkah for helping coordinate and representing the parents.
We also want to thank all the shluchim who were ready to drop everything to help our children. We are deeply grateful to them:
Rabbi and Mrs. Hendel from Athens, Greece, were prepared to welcome all 77 members of the group and host them for Shabbos. Rabbi and Mrs. Wilshansky of Milan were preparing to host the girls for Shabbos. Rabbi Pinny and Chava Backman of USF in Tampa were informed on Friday that the group would likely arrive there after Shabbos, and immediately prepared hundreds of meals and arrangements to host them. Ultimately, the plans shifted, but the powerful feeling that Chassidim ein mishpacha was deeply felt.
We also thank Mrs. Brachi Kogan, and Mrs. Sara Blau of Bais Rivkah, Golda Reichman, and the many parents involved for working tirelessly to ensure that all the details would be put in place.
We are grateful to Hashem for His endless kindness and our children’s safe return. We continue to daven for the safety of all Yidden in Eretz Yisroel and continued miracles!

as a beautiful story as it is and all the people that came together to make it happen . not sure if it’s something that I would advertise about how the Rebbe view of not leaving
Everybody here needed to leave yeshiva to fulfill their shluchus in their home as the yeshiva is called TZEIRI HASHLUCHIM
We also had to leave to get back to CH to continue our studies. We had an amazing Eretz Yisroel trip and it was time for us to continue our shlichus.
IMHO, the families of these extraordinary kids should recognize the devotion of the local Shluchim in the DC area who met these tired & hungry students with a big smile and TONS of fresh warm food. Please get out your checkbooks and credit cards and show your gratitude. My grandson was so thrilled he actually sent me pictures of the food they were each given ! All that yummy food wasn’t free… Please publicize which Chabad Houses organized this amazing welcome.
The girls were there for a two-week trip. They were supposed to go home they weren’t learning there for the year…
These are the best kids in the world!!!! May G-d bless them with all klal Yisrael with all the blessings and in a revealed way

We cudnt have done it without you! Thank you for your calm leadership during this crazy time!!!
Hakaras hatov is specifically owed to Paullette Reines, @liliskoshercatering for taking charge using her unique catering background to make all the kosher food happen
Maybe the whole reason they weee stranded was because hashem wanted Shabbos kept in Jordan
Sparks have all been elevated
Vayishlach 1992, p..161.
We’re so deep into the geulah guys
Yes!! I’m a mother of one of the Seminary Bachurot. After all the delays & 4am Fri Jordan – 8pm Thurs NY/NJ EST that all flights were canceled no more planes. The only way to look at the situation. Is that since there’s no Jewish community since they were kicked out in 1948 – nor a Bet Chabad for business travelers- it’s obvious that HKBH hand picked all the Jewish people in that group to bring the power & Kedusha of Shabbos to Ever Hayarden where Reuben, Gad & 1/2 of Menashe used to live before Galus Bavel!! That zechus… Read more »
Eretz Israel is the safest place to be.
Jordan is not the safest place to be. We had our shlichus and it was time for us to go back.
Huge Shoutout to the Rabbis in training on this trip: Menny Novack and Mottel Kleyman. Who kept cool and collected during this immensely stressful journey. From arranging the kosher food, public relations, private relations. And just their extreme readiness and maturity during the trip. And of course, keeping everyone’s Emunah Strong!
Wow guys get some sleep and eat for an entire army!
L’Chaim!!
Huge shoutout to the Washington dc shliach for bringing us food to the airport and arranging transportation

Did was get you into Jordan kept you in the hotel with food and stuff. Chabad is the one who rescued you. Thanks to Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun who stopped everything and made the rescue happen.
What food did they have?
These people helped out of the goodness of their hearts—free of charge. It wasn’t in their power or control.
Hotel and airfare for 79+ people isn’t free. Hakarat ha Tov is in order.
The other amazing madricha . Literally the best

Stuck in Jordan but really are we We are in Jordan, here and awaiting Ready to go, we’ve been longing To our destination, which we’ve been yearning But why would we yearn For something not right Hashem has a plan, He’s holding us tight Stuck in Jordan, hungry and tired Our faith held steady, our minds wired We whisper pesukim, under our breath Quietly we pray, for our next awaited step Stuck in Jordan, what should we ponder We’re waiting and waiting, until we can no longer Our brains fill with annoyance, anger and frustration An easier option, takes no… Read more »
BEAUTIFUL PEOM!!
Really sums up our journey!
It says: “To have faith in Hashem”
Faith is following the Rebbe’s directives, even if you are afraid.
Thank Hashem we had such good mariachiot who dealt with all our concerns and worries Chana and Rochelle !!!!
As parents of one of the boys, we cannot express our Hakaros Hatov enough to all those who worked behind the scenes to make this story a safe and joyful ending! This has been a pretty hectic few days, and we are grateful for the safe ending. Thank you to Hashem above all, thank you to the parents who helped coordinate the communication, Mrs. Golda Reichman and Mrs. Sara Blau, Thank you to Ambassador Rabbi Kaploun and President Trump for stepping in and making this flight a reality, thank you to the US embassy staff in Amman for handling all… Read more »
This whole story brought out the best in our kids . You wouldn’t believe how good they were to each other . Helping each other . Caring for each other . I hear their stories see their videos and I can’t help but be proud that these are our kids . Ashreinu
thank you to chabad for getting the plane out greybull couldn’t do it and Chabad came in and did it right away!
Gotta give credit where credibly is due thank you vamoose bus transport who came together so last minute on a weekend 👏
Traveling through both Egypt and Jordan has been fraught with difficulties and in my opinion, it seems safer to stay in Israel until a flight is available.
Tefillin have been confiscated in Jordan.
To our amazing madrichot Rochelle Mondshine and Chana Elberg!!
For taking good care of us and being there for us . A nd for staying *the whole time* with us!!
Tears
So beautiful
It’s amazing to see how the rebbe’s shita of not leaving eretz Israel is being shut down with slogans such as , ‘we needed to continue our shlichus’ and such.
It’s a clear message to those students that the rebbe’s shita is to be taken very moderate…. Haztalacha for the continuation of the “shlichus” by defying the rebbe’s words .
The Zman was about to be over less then 3 days later because we had a mivtza trip planned
Are you saying that all bochurim should stay in Israel for pesach ??
When it comes to changing plans no plans were changed we were suppose to leave that motzia shabbos anyways. If you really think about it we extended our trip. Additionally rabbanim were consulted with EVERY step of the way so if you disagree you may bring it up with them.
A huge yashar koyach to ALL those involved in getting our children home safely. I’m thinking there might be some shidduchim happening in the future from this event 😏
While I don’t think we have much to worry about them dating, they literally looked after these kids who are ages 14-16. Beautiful future mothers and wives iyh!
Clearly the rebbe and Hashem wanted them to be there bc from what I heard they printed a Tanya and overall uplifted the yidishkeit in Jordan which there had not been for a very long time , let’s stop giving our personal opinions we clearly don’t know what these boys and girls went thru
Thank you so much for the support
It is true that no one who wasn’t there can ever understand what our circumstances were and as such it’s useless to judge us, only creates hurt feelings
Thank you for speaking up for us
Bh ! It’s so nice when the news of the day is GOOOD. Good people good actions good behaviors this is the best kind of news to come heere and see ! Keep sharing the goodness
Just a few day’s ago in Hayom Yom the Rebbe writes, As we walk in the street we must think words of torah. For if not, the ground complains.. “who are you to tread on me” So too this shabbos. Since the creation of the world. That area, that country, that hotel etc. was waiting 5786 years for Divre Kodesh & kedushas hashabbos to be brought down, to elevate that place in preparation for Moshiachs arrival. Guys there must of been major anxiety drama panic fear etc etc. but you did it powerfully. Kudos and thank you kinderlach for helping… Read more »
The success of all food, communications, sanity, dedication and devotion, and probably everything that worked is thanks to an incredible human being by the name of Charna Turk!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you!
We have a Shlichus in school. We are not escaping Israel but returning to where we are needed, in the school we came from. We were going to leave Motzei Shabbos to come back the war postponed our return. Now that Hashem enabled us to return (the Messenger being grey bull) we are utilizing this opportunity to return to our Shlichus not escaping.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Bryan Stern, Olivia, Chris and the whole Greybull team who undertook this whole rescue operation in the first place…..they are all very very special people who devote their lives to saving and helping others, most are volunteers
Thank you for everything you did for our kids
May Hashem bless you!!
I never knew that a Jew could be “rescued” from the land of Israel…
this is the Beis Rivka seminary based in crown heights – that’s where they stay and study – they were on a 2 week trip to Eretz Yisroel supposed to get back Sunday before Purim ,so the girls from Chabad seminaries in Eretz Yisroel are actually staying there where Hashem is definitely – and may Hashem add on even more of his – protecting and blessing them amongst all Yidden there – in Eretz Yisroel and all around the world – ,however these Beis Rivka girls are based in crown heights that’s where their teachers are and that’s where their… Read more »
Mom of a Seminary Bachurah. To the author of the article & everyone else reading the article, on the note “that they didn’t want to break Shabbos.” Here’s the added following piece: Bryan told us Bais Rivkah parents in a quick Zoom meeting in the 18 minutes before Shabbos there (in Jordan 6:20pm was h”n), that he was going to help the State Dept to understand practicality wise that if any of the kids, Bachurot & Bachurim (my specific wording) in the group wld land in Athens or JFK on Shabbos, they’d be STRANDED bc the Shliach in Athens, &… Read more »
