Faculty members of Associated Beth Rivkah Schools, the flagship Lubavitch girls’ school based in Crown Heights, are still confused as to how a standard school procedure turned into a media sensation.
“This was an internal school issue,” Mrs. Sheindel Tiechtel, the outspoken Hebrew Studies Principal, says about reports that the school fined students for using Facebook.
Having just returned from a family affair in Germany, she said the blogger and the media reports that followed have “the whole story distorted.”
“No one ever called me for a comment or just to hear the facts. All they had is a quote from an ‘anonymous administrator,’ who I have no doubt does not exist, because they would at least have set the facts straight.”
Tiechtel told COLlive.com on Thursday, after major newspapers and TV stations have reported the story, that the school’s policy of students not using Facebook was introduced 2 years ago.
“Back then, we contacted the parents, the girls signed on their admission forms that they would not use Facebook, and no on complained,” the educator said.
What caused the ruckus now were complaints by a few parents who contacted the school, voicing concern about their high school daughters’ use of the social network.
“Internet with direction can be a useful tool,” says Mrs. Tiechtel, “but on Facebook there is a lack of privacy, and there’s often cyber bullying adding to the social peer pressure. It’s not healthy socially and safety-wise.”
The school staff did a basic search and ended up with a list of over 100 girls who had accounts with their names. “When we reminded them about the school policy, most accepted it,” Tiechtel said.
Unlike it was reported, a fine was not given. “We asked for a $100 deposit, which will be given back at the end of the year, so they don’t reactivate the account, the same way they give a deposit for the school furniture.”
Rabbi Benzion Stock, the school’s administrator, said that ever since the distorted story broke, the school has been getting many phone calls and emails.
“People, both Jews and non-Jews, are calling to say how they support the school’s decision,” he told COLlive.com.
One of the callers, a Manhattan attorney, pointed out how “there is nothing educational about Facebook. And it’s time a school shows it has standards.”
And in light of the school being put on the spot, a group of students have joined to sign an online petition supporting the educational policies of Beth Rivkah.
Addressed to Mrs. Tiechtel, it states: “We would like you to know that whether or not we are happy about the policy, we stand behind you and your decision and behind our school one hundred percent.”
Close to 200 students of the eleventh and twelfth grades have signed it. “Thank you for putting your heart and soul into taking care of us, our well-being, and our futures,” they wrote.
Mrs. Tiechtel remains certain about their decision. “We are doing the right thing,” she says.

Thank you Bais Rivka students for standing up for what is right. Bais Rivka students – you are the best!!! And Thank you Morah Tiechtel for doing what had to be done – you are the best!!
speaking in her quotes!
go you! you are a most amazing person!
GO #64!!
While the decision made, may ultimately be for the students best, and there’s no doubt in the consciences that Facebook can do to a teenager. I still firmly believe that one of the biggest challenges educators face in today’s society, is how to handle and go-about these decisions. I personally can count 150 girls in Beth Rivky that use Facebook, only with an alias as their name, and god knows how many others. Thats more than a majority. In other words, the kids are going to do it anyways. The question is, weather or not they need to lie about… Read more »
FYI, back in the early 1970’s the Rebbe gave very clear horaos to Mrs. Tiechtel stating that she should be the principal of the Limudei Kodesh of Beis Rivkah High School. Back then, the leadership of Beis Rivkah asked her to become the principal of the English department, and the Rebbe told Mrs. Tiechtel her Tafkid is to be the principal of the Hebrew Department of Beis Rivkah High School. Over the years Mrs. Tiechtel received many answers from the Rebbe related to issues of Chinuch regarding Beis Rivkah students. Mrs. Tiechtel has given her life, her soul, and her… Read more »
No school like it in the world! And Morah Teichtel is incredible! Amazing staff, amazing girls, amazing chayus!
Unfortunately, when it comes to Beis Rivkah, most things are about money. It would be a lot easier to trust that the school has the girls benefit in mind if they didn’t mix money and fines into it.
first it’s a fine, now it’s a two year deposit, first it’s one administrator talking on an aired interview, then an anonymous one and now another one. first they ask people to open FB accounts, now they say they can’t have one. consistency is difficiult. especially when there is more than one “head” but let’s say FB should be prohibited, as well as enforcing other tznius rules, like certain dress codes. could any be effective or even appropriate if there are prhibitions due to tznius for the students while some faculty violate the same rules? why not have a uniform… Read more »
Thank You to all the wonderful Beth Rivkah students for being positive and supportive of your school Thank you col for writing the real story and not looking for sensationalism.I work in Beth Rivkah and would like to add that I am so proud of my colleagues and our students.
best comment from all!
while I have my issues with certain ways that BR is run, I cannot imagine who it was that started this mischief…..either a BR girl who has boundary difficulties, or an anti semetic person. Any school is allowed its standards. Look at the insane rules that sororities and fraternities have in the universities. It is really insane and should be outlawed. This was just plain brainless and heartless to pick on this. this standard is the school’s. If you don’t like it, go to public school or somewhere else who doesnt care about that. Don’t try to make it fit… Read more »
Glad to see this…at the end of the day, when all the initial anger and annoyance subsides, the students themselves realized what was right, and that their principals and teachers really only want what’s best for them. Kol hakavod to bais rivkah for taking a stand.
really. very interesting. please go on.
Tremendous respect for Mrs. Teichtel.
People like her are hard to find. Always trying to be positive, look for the positive.
Her devotion is clearly what keeps the school together.
Thank you for acting with the students best interests in mind.
I didn’t find out about this petition until now but if I had I would definitely have signed
No we were not forced to sign. We love our school and if u dnt go to Bais Rivka u have no right to say anything negative or anything at all about our Schhool. Pls just stop making a mountain out of a molehill Abd build urself a little bridge and get over it. Gutte voch and kusher and freilichen pesach.
are u sure all those schools signed it?? i wish my school would do the same and follow the rabbanim. 85% of my class has fcbk. like alllll the “chassidishe” girls have it. i recently deactivated mine though because i realized how pointless it is.
We love you!
luv ur grandchildren
in the beginning of the school year, students were NOT forced to sign a contract, they were told to sign a contract to stay in the school. If they did not follow the rules they signed, it is permissible for enforce a punishment. yasher koach bais rivkah
standards have dropped to an unbelievable low. the sheitalch of the young ones are almost to the floor, open necks, see through clothing, very provocative and even the way they act. The situation is dire!!!
Some womens clothes are so skimpy you can see their arteries. And what’s up with the cut out necklines. Isn’t the bone at the neck supposed to be covered? Where is the outrage?
…it is time to do away with tight clothes, skirts above the knee and sleeves above the elbow. Use the same method – $100 “deposit” and/or suspension for any student seen anytime or anywhere wearing non-tznius clothes. TAKE BACK THE STREETS!!
all you think about 200 girls for my son what the h*** is rong withy you
This story reminds me why I loved bais rivka as a girl, and now, 20 years later, still feel the same.
there is nothing like the spirit of a bais rivka girl – we may not be perfect, but we love our school. Thank you Morah Teichtel for doing the right thing and showing genuine care for our girls.
– A former BR student
thank you to thosse beis rivka students who signed!
<3 a friend
but that doesnt take away from the fact that someone put it out for the whole world to read that was not aceptible at all to write bad stuff about our school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they shuld apologize for doing that!!!!!!!!!!!!!
were they forced to sign
Facebook is only Kosher if it is used to get grant money or some kind of donation. Used for any other purpose, its Tumah Mamosh!!!!.
Talk about sending mixed messages to young students and showing them how money koshers everything!!!
Pathetic!!
And the connection between speeding and $100 is? It’s called a fine.
it was just 11th and 12th graders 9th and 10th signed it too thank you!
it might be a good suggestion to have a Bais Rivkah rep standing at the doors of empire kosher and say soemthing t alumni that are coming in or going out with their clothes an absolte disgusting representation of their education! also, what about these high school girls now on vacation practicing lack of tznius??!!
Funny that there is, indeed, a “Like” option at the end of the article. I hadn’t noticed that irony until you pointed it out!
brhs and mrs teichtel, we love you!
LOVE MRS TIECHTEL AND BRHS! U HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH WORK GOES INTO OUR SCHOOL FROM THE WONDERFUL STAFF!!!
I love how a bunch of Bais Rivka students Facebook ‘liked’ this article! What are you trying to say with that?!
I agree. I also think that those irresponsible students and parents who blew this out of proportion should also apologize.
The person who first wrote the story should go the rebbe’s ohel and ask mechila for embarasing the rebbe. Bais rivka is the rebbes own school.
sophmores signeddd tooo
a big yshar koach to collive for being a responsible media outlet in our community
don’t think we didn’t notice how chose not to report about this “story” when it first happened and only waited until it was blown out of proportion to properly address it
a grateful yid
9th grade signed it to!!!
If the school is so concerned about standards from a tzinus point of view or even a secular point of view that Facebook is not a good thing … Then I think same should be for all administrator’s daughters … Their families should not be treated different then any other student … Equal treatment across the board for all and every student regardless who they are … If facebook is not good for the secular world then definitely no good for the Jewish world
A certain individual who owns a blog website posted about this in the first place. I think he should apologize for the craziness he caused around the world. He should ask for mechila. You are a sorry individual-always looking for machlokes. You should know better. How is Moshiach supposed to come? I wish the school I went to banned facebook!
It is very interesting how many comments were made in the wee hours of the morning.
ummmm its the whole school who signed it, not just 11th and 12th grade
girls from alll teh grades were finedn
The very fact that this non-issue has gotten to the media shows how destructively public everything has become; and that obviously applies to facebook as well.
#30 – that’s a cop out. Will wearing uniforms now convince them to be tsniusdik later? Will protecting them from bullies in the classroom protect them forever from not nice people? Will noticing an eating disorder now protect them for life? Obviously not but we hope that as they grow older they will also grow in maturity & understand how these rules stand to help them & hopefully they on their own will be able to then stand up for what is right. I have been waiting to see such a stand taken! I am not nor ever was in… Read more »
The school can speak to Dr Dovid J.Leiberman PHD from Lakewood about self concept. Who explains, people behave acc. to their self concept. Healthy self concept is built by making good choices.
Self concept will also come from facebook and the result is low self esteem.
all the media started from one blog ‘they should be shut down for all the embarrassing they have caused to there “fellow” crown heighters.
they were the amalek in all of this they jumped in first and made an issue out of a school rule!!!!!
a bais rivkah 11th grader
How do I sign the petition?
“Faculty members of Associated Beth Rivkah Schools, the flagship Lubavitch girls’ school based in Crown Heights, is still confused as to how a standard school procedure turned into a media sensation.” Could it be, because a certain blog decided to post an article about the administration’s decision? Just wondering…
Over two years ago the Rabonim of CH (Rabbis Osdoba and Schwei) and other communities (Chicago, Monsey, Pittsburgh, Miami, Toronto, LA, Michigan) signed and endorsed standards for Lubavitch High Schools which included a “No face book Policy”. To Quote: “A Talmodoh of a Mosad Chabad should not have a facebook or myspace account, twitter, buzz, or any other broad social network account” In addition the following schools signed (Bais Chana, FL, Bais Chana, LA, Bais Chomesh, Toronto, Beth Rivka, NY, Beth Rivkah, Montreal, Bnos Chayua , Albany, Bnos Chana, Worcester, Bnos Chomesh, NY, LGHS Chicago, Beis Chaya Mushka, Monsey, Rohr… Read more »
is the mommy of us all!
Our a school that finnaly stands up to what is right. Enough of all this bashing when one stands on what the rebbe would want. Let’s not kid ourselves, Facebook is not the best place to be, yes, if you need it or work or such as a adult, even then you should be careful, but a high school student? The dangers there? And either way, this here is not just about Facebook, it’s about a school rule, you follow the rules of a school wherever you are, don’t like it? You can always go to another school, that allows… Read more »
What’s going to happen once they are out of school? They are going to sign up to facebook and other social media and the issues of cyber bullying, peer pressure, and modesty concerns are still going to be there. Are these schools doing something to prevent such issues happening to theses girls in the future? Maybe they should let the girls have the facebook accounts now and teach them how to avoid and deal with such issues. They still exist whether there is a facebook account or not. No point brushing it under a rug and denying it.
almost
Boruch Hashem, Beth Rivkah finally made students adhere to its rules concerning facebook. There are girls however who probably do not understand how private accounts on facebook can be a lack of privacy or a source of bullying if they only have accounts with friends and family. Maybe this should be explained clearer to the students.
BAIS RIVKA IS THE BESTEST OF THE BEST!!!!
LIKE NO OTHER!!
im quite surprised that this even made the ‘news’…….i suppose these ‘big’ stations just have no news to report. I was never a student of, nor do i have children attending BR but i fully commend BRHS. I am on facebook as a shlucha, using it as another tool for reaching out to our community, and as a mother, I do not think young girls (or boys) belong on Facebook. There is a lot of peer pressure to show more cool (and revealing) pictures, lots of interaction between boys and girls that would otherwise not be occurring and it is… Read more »
now how do we get this viral again? 233 comments and all the news sights will hear??
WE LOVE MRS. TIECHTEL!!!!!!!!!

WE LOVE MRS. TIECHTEL!!!!!!!!!
YAAAAY FOR BRHS!!!!!!!!!!!
BEST SCHOOL IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!
thanks for putting the story into prespective
And we have the best principal, Mrs. Tiechtel and the best administration including Rabbi Stock.
very beautiful, it all sounds so nice, it’s good to see that after a long ordeal, we can see this for what it is, a total fairy tale. just waiting for the blue birds to chirp and the rainbow to come out while the sun shines away all the real cold hard truths we’re pretending don’t exist.
Can anyone Tell me how this became such a big deal? Or how a tv station found out about it at all!! Cuz I’m still totally confused
Disclaimer- I am related to Mrs. Teichtel and a BRHS alumnus. Over 2 decades later, on shlichus, I have many girls from BRHS assist us and they are hardworking, dedicated, motivated, and make me proud. Mrs. Teichtel, Benjy and the whole staff give their days and nights, vacations, and personal simcha time to worry about each individual student. I am involved in schools today and have as yet never seen such genuine concern and dedication. Our principals and girls don’t deserve this kind of school bashing! Thank you Bais Rivkah for taking the lead!
how do i sign the petition??
Beautiful piece! It’s time for the silent majority of wonderful Bais Rivka girls to take a stand and show the world the virtues of modesty. While there are some who are pressuring you to be “hot” and wear short skirts with stiletto heels, know that the derech of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin is the true revolution of the future! Kol HaKavod to all the girls who courageously signed the petition.
..ahh finally i will have a list of 200 girls to choose for my son!
and the connection between facebook and $100 is….?
It may seem stupid to get caught on such a small detail, but since Mrs.Teichtel seems upset about facts that were stated wrongly I’d just like to correct her and say that the 100 dollars was promised to be given back after they graduate. Im sure they’ll be able to pocket some cash when quite a few girls dont remember to collect in a year and half.
Did the school encourage voting for them on FB in order to
win grant money? If so, hamaven yovin!
it is so cool to be the first to comment
nice
you’re truly the best principal!
thank you so much for sticking to this, it is the right thing and every student in BRHS that i’ve spoken to backs you 100%.
just ignore all the news and media because we, you’re students, know you are doing the right thing and love you as a principal!
thank you again for being amazing!
-a fellow BRHS student
While I hate the fact that perfectly legitimate actions done in our community are turned into excuses for our all concerned friends that have nothing to do with us and don’t even pretend to have our best interests in mind to begin stomping on our ways and ‘fighting for our rights’, (all thanks to the fact that people within our community had the good sense of letting the world know that this major news event took place), I must say this seems to be turning into an example of Chabad showing an example for the rest of the moral world… Read more »
Mrs teichtel you are amazing brhs is a life was a life changing experience for me and everyone should go there!!
