Ariela Reshit was on a transatlantic flight from Brussels to New York after participating in the CTeen Shabbaton held at Lake Balaton, Hungary.
During the meal service, a flight attendant brought her a packed kosher meal—a nutritious burrito.
A woman seated nearby noticed the different meal and asked if Reshit only ate kosher. That sparked a conversation in which the woman shared that she was Jewish.
She was traveling with her son, who revealed that he had never put on Tefillin before. Reshit suggested that it wasn’t too late, and with the mother’s agreement, she called over one of the young CTeen rabbis who was also on board.
Right there, thousands of feet in the air, the boy celebrated his Bar Mitzvah for the very first time.
“This encounter shows the power of a kosher burrito on a plane,” Reshit said. “Even when you think you’re just living your life, you’re making an impact and changing the world.”
It was also a reminder of how Mivtzah Tefillin can be performed by every Jew, regardless of gender.
