A passenger plane from New York to Louisville was forced to make an emergency landing today after a Jewish teenager’s tefillin were thought to be terrorist devices.
A 17-year-old, travelling with his 16-year-old sister, decided to lay tefillin and strapped the two leather boxes to his head and arm before praying. But alarmed passengers, who did not know what the tefillin were, alerted the crew and the plane was diverted to Philadelphia International Airport, where it was met by emergency security personnel.
Reports say that the teenager, who was co-operative throughout, was removed from the plane for questioning, while main roads around the airport were closed as a precaution. Once officials were satisfied, however, the plane was released and allowed to continue its journey.
This is a real Hashgohah Protis.
All world know now what is a Teffilin, what is Kdusha,
and Who We Are.

I was on a flight sunday morning Jan 17 out of jfk. Took off at 7:30 Am. So I put on my talis and tefillin right after we got to cruising altitude. After the flight another yid who was on the plane who also davened with his tefillin on board told me that when I put on my Talis and swung it around my body etc. that the woman sitting behind me called the flight attendant and complained that she was nervous etc. But luckily I didnt cause a national emergency cause the flight attendant knew what a talis and… Read more »
Ufarazta with a capital U
Maybe #59 & #60 are right and the world does not know about Tefilin, but what does that mean, maybe the message is that it is time that we show them, however to go as far and say that we should not dress as a Chasid, or don Tefilin because we might be copied, then maybe we should not wear shoes, for the shoe bomber, or drink water for the liquid explosives, or do anything, or go anywhere, or say anything, because maybe someone will copy? I propose that we embrace this situation and make every effort to be proud… Read more »
its a long, long, long time since yidden have been wearing tfilin and the drivers call it a device!,but anyway,i still agree with #59
“What idiots this flight crew?” It’s a bad reflection that frum Jews could be so self-centered and myopic that they would be unable to see things from non-Jews’ side, let alone all the Jews who’ve never seen tefilin, especially in these crazy times. What if Muslims took advantage of this situation to dress as a frum Jew and have something inside the tefilin that really is dangerous? Remember the Muslim who dressed as a Chasid in Israel and boarded a bus, with no one suspecting him, exploded his suicide vest? We will remain in great potential danger if frum Jews… Read more »

OLFACTARY???
I guess the cop didn’t hear them say phlactary(pun intended)
fac⋅to⋅ry [fak-tuh-ree, -tree]
–noun, plural -ries.
1. a building or group of buildings with facilities for the manufacture of goods.
2. any place producing a uniform product, without concern for individuality: They call it a law school, but it’s just a degree factory.
3. (formerly) an establishment for factors and merchants carrying on business in a foreign country.
what a wonderful chance to teach about tefillin:

He had a co-op? How nice for a 17 year old.
This is funny as hell!
They thought he had a bomb so they… they calmly landed the plane? Did the restrain the would be bomber? hahaha
Man Americans can be STUPID some times…
And #6 is so so so funny EVERYONE SHOULD READ IT:
Finally the main point (as #5 said):

Not to take away from this amazing event, the fact that we’re calling them phylacteries is an embarrassment on multiple levels.
First off, phylacteries doesn’t only mean Tefillin. It could mean safeguarding amulet. Is that Tefillin?
But more importantly, why do we have to apologize for what we have?! They’re Tefillin! It’s not like anybody knows what “phylacteries” are, so why not go with name recognition and tell it as it is?
Look on yahoo.com front page, phylacteries is there multiple times, Tefillin not once. What an embarrassment.
yes #42 but phylacteries is about as comprehensible as tefillin!!!!!!! So why not just go with the real thing.
It could also be, you know, true Philadelphians have trouble pronouncing all sylables of a word….. love em anyway.
wait until u get to ur destinnation
good to hear about a 17 year old wanting to don tefilin on an airplane. He sure is proud of his heritage not to mention his devotion to davening. I think HKBH loves when we do Mitzvos in public. Maybe guys can get a special sticker on their tefilin to show crew members that it was scanned and is “kosher”
DEVISE
“and the other nations will fear you when they see the tefillin on your head”
mast have been a oholei toranik on the plane …. calling it old factories?
i guess he was a lubavitcher probely
I just saw a video on VIN of the bochur. He doesn’t look Lubavitch.
Im # 6. i acyualy herd about the pasuk, and then i found it on gruntig.net so i just copied it.
Still very true!!!!
the airlines will be a little more educated?
(I heard the pilot had ‘ruach hakodesh.’ The Tefillin were ‘possul.’
(Joke)
What’s ‘tefillin?’
#6 tell us where you copied that quote from?
Kol Homer dovor beshem omroi meivi geulah leolam!
I agree wholeheartedly with opinions 24 and 27. Firstly, if you have time to daven when you arrive at your destination, why daven on the plane? Secondly, talk to the flight attendents and explain that you want to daven and perhaps they have a private area. Unfortunately, we live in dangerous times and it is better to be safe than sorry.
What idiots this flight crew?
A terrorist can use it in a bad way CV. I remember a scandal involving a business man who smuggled diamonds in to canada in his tefillin. Best thing – try to daven in shul or at home
does that mean men/boys wont be able to put on tefillin on a air plane?
hahahahahahahaha thanx u made my day!
Communication is the way to go. All the kid needed to do is give a heads-up to the flight attendant what he was going to do BEFORE he did it.
it sounds like this boys teffilin had a strap coming out of the head devise going into the hand devise
maybe that’s why they thought it was a terrorist
was this a labivitcher?
Whenever on a long flight and I need to daven with teffilin I first go over to the flight attendant notify them of what I am about to do and the details, how long, where, why etc. I also explain that people may be worried in these times as it does look a bit strange and ask for their support.
when you don’t send it through the xray machine….
(they give you the option to go behind a curtain- privacy)…
vrooe kol amay haarets key sheym hashem nikra alecha vraoo memeca its a clear posooke
olfactories?? thats in ur nose 🙂
who is the guy???????????????
first of all i think is a sing that moshiach is comming!!!
now all the world (more people) will know what is teffilin (from the news..)
n5 you are funny…
Great job – what a Kiddush Hashem!
# 5 – LOL!
thats just what the rebbe said by the 6 day war (-i think), that when we wear tefilin it will scare them away- and it sure did!
Apparently goyim were excluded from mivtza tfillin for some strange reason
Bochur is chabad?
last time i checked “shall rosh” does not connect to your “shall yad”
This could be horrible! I hate to be the downer, but CV”S they try to cut tefillin open, etc.
who is it ?
I’ve travelled to every state via every airline known to man. I’ve donned tefillin and tallis thousands of times… Must be the new heightened terrorist alert……. that the authorities even suspect that a terrorist can be dressed up like an orthodox Jew and do his tefillin bit……… it makes sense 100%. Yasher Koach to the airline and Yasher Koach Double to the bochur.
1) Real Kiddush Hashem on the boy’s part!
2) really funny #5 😉
3) seems like mivtza teffilin needs another boost!!
Moshiach now!!
p.s. was it a lubavitcher?
I’m sorry but you had me really cracking up over here!
what a shame that there are still some guys out there not knowing what teffilin are. after 60 years of mivtzah tefilin!?
This is hysterical

Yes? Great! Did you put on forehead and arm devices today? What? You’ve never put on Olive Factories in your life? Wow! You’re a car’s safta! This is your Bar Mitt Stop!
why are they calling it a device?
last i checked they’re called phylacteries?!
But it’s an interesting thing that ppl out there still don’t know what Tefilin are!
Also a big pat on the back to this kid 17 years old and a big Kidush Hashem, all the stations were talking about how cooperative he was!!
wow what a kiddush hashem!!!!
