At 6-foot-5, Bill de Blasio is the tallest New York City mayor of the modern era — and possibly of all time.
And on the first night of Chanukah, the recently-elected Mayor lit the world’s tallest Menorah in front of a large crowd at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn.
The giant Menorah, on display at the entrance to Prospect Park, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over materiality.
Despite the rainy weather, a large crowd was in attendance, enjoying live music, doughnuts and gifts for the children distributed by the Mayor.
Rabbi Shimon Hecht, Director Chabad of Park Slope, which sponsors the World’s Largest Menorah said, “We’re very touched that the Mayor is joining us on the first night. As a local Park Slope resident, his participation will definitely bring unprecedented awareness to the Holiday and its universal message of increasing in light to eliminate any darkness.”
The lighting of the “World’s Largest Menorah” takes place at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza every night of Chanukah at 6:00 PM. However, in order to accommodate the Jewish Sabbath, Friday night’s lighting will take place at 3:30 PM, and Saturday night at 7:00 PM.

Brooklyn has the tallest Menorah in the world as per article ?? … I thought the one in Manhattan at 5th and 57 or 59 is the tallest
I trust that he will only light the shammas and not the actual first candle since he can’t make the brocha.
Join us tonight for our first candle lighting of Chanukah and be a part of our #menorahselfie competition to win 6 free tickets to the NETS game on Jewish Heritage Night, this Sunday.
