Public Sukkahs built by the Lubavitch Youth Organization (LYO – Tzach) gave give thousands of Jews who live, work or visit New York City, as well as Jewish diplomats that work in various embassies, to eat and make the blessings over lulav and esrog.
Rabbi Shmuel Butman, director of the organization, emphasized the strategic location of the “International Sukkah” across the United Nations “where voices denying the Holocaust and calls for our destruction are often heard.”
Quoting from Koheles (7, 14) “G-d created one against the other,” Rabbi Butman said, “The message of the Sukkah is resoundingly clear — the Jewish People will prevail and it is this Sukkas Sholom, the Sukkah of Peace, that will overcome all the diatribes from across the street and bring real peace, true peace, to all the nations of the world.”
Additional Sukkahs were were built for Wall Street at Battery Park and for the Garment Center at 6th Avenue and 32 Street.
