Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a Chabad Shliach in Bondi, Sydney, Australia, was murdered in a terror attack on Sunday, the first night of Chanukah, 5786.
He was 41 years old.
Born in England, Rabbi Schlanger studied at Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim in Brunoy, France, and received semicha ordination at the Central Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim Lubavitch – 770 in Crown Heights.
After marrying the daughter of Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, Senior Dayan on the Sydney Beth Din in Australia and director of Chabad of Bondi F.R.E.E., he became an assistant rabbi to his father in law.
Rabbi Schlanger was a beloved and energetic Shliach who took pride in his work with the 5,000-member-strong Russian-speaking Jewish community in the Sydney area, who fled from the former Soviet Union.
Rabbi Schlanger worked with his father in law to develop and launch a website to assist Shluchim and individuals worldwide requiring certification of their Jewish status, whether for Aliya to Israel, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Synagogue memberships, marriages or other purposes.
He served as a Chaplain to the New South Wales Corrective Services and Chaplain to New South Wales Prisoners of War and St. Vincent’s Hospital. He also led Project Noah, an educational initiative that brings the timeless values of the 7 Noahide Laws to the youth through engaging and interactive programs.
Rabbi Schlanger also worked on many other projects, creating an app to report Mivtzoim Duchs to the Rebbe.
Over the years, he has been in touch with COLlive.com to share some of his activities, as the Rebbe encouraged Shluchim to publicize positive activities. The last event he emailed COLlive about was a memorial he organized in honor of the terror victims of Mumbai (Rabbi Gabi and Rivky Holzberg) and Dubai (Rabbi Zvi Kogan), a month ago.
On Sunday, Rabbi Schlanger was part of the organizing team of annual Chanukah by the Sea in the Bondi Beach Park. The event features a lighting ceremony of a large Menorah followed by a celebration for the community.
Rabbi Schlanger would emcee this event and was shot by terrorists who opened fire at participants of the Jewish celebration.
He is survived by his wife Chayale (nee Ulman) and children, including a 2 month old baby.
He is also survived by his parents, Rabbi Binyomin and Dobra Schlanger – Israel, and siblings Baruch Schlanger – Toronto, Chanie Drizin – Crown Heights, Dena Gansburg – London, England, Tzippy Kastel – Sydney, Australia, Shmuli Schlanger – Bakersfield, CA, Perela Goldhirsch – Melbourne, Australia, Sorala Hayes – Miami, FL and Shaina Joseph – Sydney, Australia.

Growing up in London back in the 70’s and early 80’s and attending Lubavitch Primary School in Stamford Hill, Reb Eli’s HY”D father was a popular and well loved rebbi in the school. was my Rebbi at London Primary (Elementary) school under Rabbi Cousin. I cant imagine what his father is feeling right now no father should see his children go before him. What is most frustrating is this could have been prevented but the utterly gutless and cowardly leftist Australian Govt remains passive while Jews are gunned down in the streets. My suggestion to yiden in Australia: play the system. Join hunters clubs. Obtain licenses to own long single shot rifles. Stuff them into duffel bags, conceal them in beach containers etc. (disguise them but have them at the ready with a trained person on scene). The police are useless. Save yourselves and deal with repercussions later otherwise get outta there. If you try to be the law abiding citizen you will get slaughtered cause the Islamist are playing the system, but are breaking the rules at the last minute to שוחט you.

My analysis of Australia, you may obtain a permit to own a gun for “sportsman” purposes (shotgun, and other single shot long guns). Self defense is never allowed as a reason to own a gun therefore you cannot purchase and own a pistol (your classic concealed firearm). I join many who say we should not be intimidated and bring stronger resolve in reaching out to Yidden to bring light of Tora umitzvos.
