Mr. Shimon Benarroch, a beloved father and grandfather from the Chabad community in Los Angeles, CA, passed away on Monday, 12 Nissan, 5786.
He was 92.
Shimon Benarroch was born in 1934 in Tangier, Morocco.
As a young boy he had a deep unwavering longing to learn Torah. In 1948, when rabbis from the Gateshead Yeshiva in England traveled to Morocco seeking young boys dedicated to Torah study, Shimon—just 13 years old—made the firm and courageous decision to leave his family and homeland.
He spent five years immersed in learning in Gateshead, laying the foundation for a life rooted in Torah and Mitzvos. He later continued his studies and trained as a shochet under the guidance of Rabbi Berel Levin, embracing this sacred responsibility with great care and integrity.
In 1959, Shimon emigrated to the United States, where he would build the next chapter of his life. In 1965, he married his beloved wife, Kelly (Rochel Ben Haim), and together they created a beautiful and enduring family. They eventually settled in St. Paul, Minnesota, where they became a cornerstone of the Chabad community there.
Seeking better chinuch for their children and with the directives of the Rebbe, the Benarroch family settled in Los Angeles, California.
For over 30 years, Shimon was a member of congregation Levi Yitzchok.
Shimon and Kelly’s home was always open, a true embodiment of hachnasas orchim. Their warmth, generosity, and hospitality touched countless lives and left a lasting impression on all who entered.
Shimon and Kelly were warmly known as the owners of the famed restaurant “Simon’s La Glatt” on Fairfax Blvd., from where they lovingly fed the frum community for many years, bringing not just food, but warmth to the many simchas they catered for.
Shimon was a man of strong, deep emunah, a love for torah and niggunim and a genuine love of life. He was exceptionally generous and took immense nachas from his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who were his greatest pride and joy. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kelly, and his children: Esther Michael (Brooklyn, NY), Avrohom Benarroch (Brooklyn, NY), Moshe Benarroch (Los Angeles, Ca), Ruthie Sperlin (Brooklyn, NY), Miriam Rav-Noy (Los Angeles, Ca), Simcha Minkowitz (Pomona), and Sarah Chani Benarroch (Brooklyn, NY).
