Rabbi Bentzion Chanowitz, a devoted Chossid and Baal Chesed from Brooklyn, NY, passed away on Wednesday, 7 Nissan, 5786.
He was 69.
R’ Bentzion was a businessman with a passion for Chesed and helping a fellow Jew.
He was the son of R’ Yisroel and Sarah Chanowitz, a well known askan and developer in Crown Heights for many years.
He founded the Bais Yisroel Torah Gemach, which he named after his father. The Gemach provided Torahs to Chabad shluchim in the United States, in Israel and around the world, as well as assisted in repairing older Torah scrolls. The Gemach also helps commission brand-new Sefer Torahs to be lent out.
He passed away after a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife, Babshi and children, Yoni Chanowitz – Crown Heights and Aliza Vishnia – Israel.
He is also survived by his sister Chaye Freyda Kohl – Highland Park, NJ.
The Levaya will take place today, Wednesday, passing by 770 at 2:15 PM.

I never met him in person, but he helped our chabad house have a Torah for years, something he did for countless chabad houses. What an amazing Yid! BDE!
R Bentzion helped us twice with a Torah for our Chabad House located in a small community.
The Zechus of all his Maasim Tovim are surely a tremendous bracha for his Neshama.

Bd”E. Reb Benson was a special Chabad Chasid. Coming from lub yichus and more. I remember him from ULY lub yeshiva on Ocean Pkwy. He was a loving, kind person. He was interested in learning and knowledge. Will make a tribute for him. May his dear wife and family be comforted.
I was very close to Bensi, as we grew up together in Yeshiva and also later.
He was such an Ish Hachesed, and risked himself to help others

Sorry to hear that news. We should hear better news to hear what the families and friends.
He also sent a sefer torah for my country, to a dear kehile that´s pretty small in number but gorgeous and warm. He helped too many places to keep in touch with this great mitzvah and made too many programs be possible. please, let us know that his legacy and gemach continue doing so in his own memory.
