A new publication has just been released, titled “Maintaining a Full Beard: Help or Hindrance to Financial Prosperity?” It was compiled by Rabbi Moshe Wiener, author of the sefer Hadras Ponim Zokon.
It cites the great luminaries of the various communities, both Litvish (e.g., the Chofetz Chaim), Sephardic (e.g., the Baba Sali) and Chassidic (e.g., the Kedushas Yom Tov), and quoting extensively from the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
This work authoritatively demonstrates that “If one lets his beard grow…he can certainly expect that Hashem will grant him a fitting marriage partner…Hashem will provide them with sustenance; they will merit to raise upright children; and he will experience a good life with the wife Hashem has designated for him” (the Chofetz Chaim).
Furthermore, “since Hashem revealed in His holy Torah… that the beard represents the Thirteen Adornments of the Sublime Beard, the paths of mercy that convey all forms of influence…it is impossible that an increase in blessing will be the reason to withhold one’s livelihood, Heaven forbid” (the Rebbe).
Moreover, “the thirteen fixtures of the beard, which correspond to the thirteen pathways of Divine Mercy…are the channels for one’s livelihood,” and, “as Chazal state, growing a beard draws down Hashem’s blessings to the entire family, materially and spiritually” (the Rebbe).
This new work can be viewed exclusively on COLlive.com (click here).
A print version can be purchased online at Kehot and seforim stores.

Please see the sefer for more about rolling up the beard. There is a piece there from the Ben Ish Chai and a story of the Rebbe Rashab to the chossid R’ Zalmen Altshuler shu”b in Kutais about not rolling up the beard. Additionally, the Rebbe spoke about this in the farbrengen of Purim 5711, where he told over a story of the FR and R Rashab where the R Rashab told the FR that he should “go out of himself and become a new person.” The Rebbe Shlita then concluded, “We must all go beyond ourself and become new… Read more »
Some of us live “out-of-town” where having a full beard puts out of the normal look for our professions. Several of my local friends and I have beards – the professionals among us roll their beards, instead of trimming. Our rabbis encourage the beards, and never has anyone’s behavior been called “degrading.” You seem to be very narrow-minded.
Even if your point about the Rebbe is true (I was not around then and only have seen pictures and heard lore), I was around in the 80’s and the Rashag (certainly among others) rolled his beard. Moreover, we are not talking about “back in the day” – again, please stay on point.
What in the world – the Rebbe and rolling a beard?! Nah sir!
And fyi I heard from old timers that back in the day rolling a beard was seen just as degrading as cutting.
Please do not combine growing or cutting a beard with rolling (or as you call it, “folding”) a beard. There were many chassidim who rolled their beard, including the Rasha”g and the Rebbe – in the early years. Rolling a beard is still maintaining and growing a beard.
Stay on point, please.
When I entered the Army Chaplaincy in 1976 , I had to fight to stay in because of my beard . I was told by various Jewish Communal leaders , Rabbis that this is a useless fight that I cannot win in the big Goyishe world and Jewish leaders at that did NOT want to back me up . I wrote the Rebbe a 3 page Tzetel explaining all I had done to stay as the Rebbe had given me a Brachah to join . His response was “Af Al Pe Kain . I redoubled my efforts and was able… Read more »
