In two months, New York State will be holding an election for a number of important races. I would like to highlight another race in particular that are extremely important to the Jewish community.
As many of you know, Councilman Chaim Deutsch is running to become the next congressman who will represent Crown Heights and New York’s 9th congressional district. Currently, the seat is being held by Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.
I will not go into all the reasons why we should support Chaim over Yvette. I will just say this – our concerns and issues will be better served by having Chaim as our congressman. Chaim and his office have a reputation for not only responding and effectively assisting his constituents within his council district, but Chaim has time and time again served the Crown Heights community, and the larger Jewish community which is not his district.
This particular congressional seat that Chaim is running for is a very significant and a unique seat. The first African American woman ever elected to Congress held this seat. That woman was Mrs. Shirley Chisholm. As publicized, she was encouraged by the Rebbe to propose legislation that eventually led to the creation of SNAP otherwise known as food stamps.
Would it not be amazing to elect to this seat the first-ever Orthodox Jew to Congress?
Everyone knows how important it is that we have some represent us who cares and will support Israel both in the good times and the bad. Now more than ever as Israel is about to legally annex Judaea and Samaria (“the West Bank”), would we not want someone like Chaim who will ensure that he votes and supports these efforts?
Here is a list of things Chaim has accomplished during his tenor as a City Councilman, now imagine what he can do if he was our Congressman:

HOW TO VOTE:
The election for this race (and of Jesse Hamilton against Assemblywoman Diana Richardson in the 43rd district) is being held Tuesday, June 23rd. The important thing now is for our community to register and come out and vote.
To register to vote (driver’s license needed), visit https://voterreg.dmv.ny.gov/MotorVoter/?_ga=2.68587793.1850807472.1587671271-511128061.1508872104
If you are having trouble registering online, please email [email protected], and they can stop by and have you fill out a paper registration form, and deliver it to the Board of Elections on your behalf. Please note, if you are registering for the first time, it is important that you register as a Democrat. In NYC the races that count are primaries. So, you must register as a Democrat in order to help elect Jesse and Chaim.
Registering as a Democrat will also allow you to vote in the November elections. The key here is to be able to vote in the Democratic primaries. So, we need everyone and anyone who can register to do so, and to register as a Democrat. The deadline to register to vote and be able to vote in the June 23rd election is Thursday, May 21st.
If you are already registered, and not sure if you are a Democrat or not, you can check your status here.
If you are registered and Democrat, then you will have two choices:
Go in person on June 23rd to vote for Jesse Hamilton and Chaim Duetsch.
You can send back the absentee ballot that the governor has announced will be mailed to every voter in NYS. However, if you do decide to vote by absentee ballot, email [email protected] so they can pick up the ballot from you, and ensure it gets counted and filed with the Board of the Elections prior to election.
Here is a chance for our community to really send a message that enough is enough, and we demand change. We demand true representation for our community. Representation by folks who care, have fought for our community and hopefully with your support will be able to fight for our community in the future.
I checked and am registered to vote but do not have a party, can I still vote or do I need to choose Democrat? And if so, how do I do that?
Thanks
You can change your party registration online!
The deadline for that was February 14. Only new registrations can now be made.
They moved it later!
The deadline was Feb 14, and it was not moved. If you are a registered voter, and not a Democrat, it is too late to change your registration before this primary.
Hatzlacha
Chaim is a tzadik ! He really really cares . We brought him to speak at an event . We had no funding to pay and he went home by train from Bronx. Chaim does whatever he can to help ! We need him ! Please make an effort to vote !
It would be neat if he won but he wouldn’t be the first orthodox member of congress. Peter Deutsch, member of congress from Florida served from 1992-2004.
First Orthodox member of Congress for this seat.
How big is the district chaim is running in. Does it include flatbush or Boro park.
Pretty big, see the map of the district-https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York’s_9th_congressional_district.
Not Boro Park, but Flatbush.
