Just in time for summer, the State of Florida is lifting all restrictions on youth activities effective immediately, including athletics and summer camps, WPTV reported.
On Friday morning, Governor Ron DeSantis said children are less likely to be infected and hospitalized from COVID-19 than adults.
“I think our kids have been out of organized activities for a couple months now, and I think that we need to have a pathway to get it back,” DeSantis said.
This decision paves the way for the reopening of the many day camps of Chabad centers in Florida, as well as the overnight camp, Camp Gan Yisroel of Lakeland.
Rabbi Yossi Biston, Director of Camp Gan Israel of Parkland, confirmed that his camp is opening this summer. “We already filled registration to capacity,” he told COLlive.com.
It is still unclear whether the CGI Miami day will be operating this summer.
The governor added that the state will not require children to wear face coverings while playing youth sports, however individual cities can choose to put those type of restrictions in place.
Broward County, which has lagged behind the rest of the state for reopenings because of a higher infection rate, said it would not be included in Friday’s new directive.
Miami-Dade officials also said they will take it slowly, and camps and sports will remain closed until county authorities consult with local medical experts.
“We do not have a timetable as yet for any openings,” said county spokeswoman Myriam Marquez.
