Crunchy Cabbage Salad
The green and purple cabbage makes for a nice presentation; the toasted nuts add great flavor and texture and the dressing is incredible. What makes this salad even better is that you can make it in advance. Simply add the crunch when ready to serve.
1 head nappa or green cabbage
1 small head purple cabbage
4 scallions
1 cup slivered almonds
1 cup angel hair pasta broken into 2 inches
½ cup soy sauce
½ cup white vinegar
½ cup sugar
½ cup oil
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Toast slivered almonds in hot oven or in a nonstick frying pan for a few minutes until light brown
Toast angel hair pasta in non-stick pan with a tablespoon of oil until light brown
Mix soy sauce, vinegar, sugar and oil in a container or whisk in a bowl
Thinly slice nappa cabbage, purple cabbage and scallions; place in large bowl
Pour dressing on top of vegetables
Top with toasted nuts and pasta crunch
Serve (if making the salad in advance, set aside nuts and only mix in when ready to serve.)
way too much soy sauce
I did this with chow mein noodles it wasnt as good as when i toasted the pasta myself but i did burn 2 batches before i got it right
no you toast the angel hair raw but not too long o it gets too hard
I tried this, using raw toasted angel spaghetti; the pasta was not edible. Was I supposed to cook and drain the pasta first and then toast it?
when we were on shlichus in south africa this was a salad that a lot of baalei batim (baale bostas…) made we all loved it and now my wife makes it here in the U.S,
I love the crunch so different
We had a lot of sugar water left from pesach and we use it in all salads that need sugar… It makes it less grainy.
u can make this salad without the sugar it tastes just as good if u want some tang add a drop of mustard and if u feel ur missing the sweet taste honey is a better option
yum!!
this salad is my number 1 hit school lunch!!!
luv ur mag n recipies this one is really good! yasher koach!
u shud be matzliach:)
looks good. thanks
Thank you! I made it last night and it was a great success!
What about xylitol. We use it as a sugar substitute and it works wonderfully. It also has other health benifits.
we make this salad all the time – its one of those that gets finished every time, no leftovers. we also read bitayavon in johannesburg – its great to see such a nice publication kosher and it makes its way all the way to south africa. shkoyach!
Just make your own alterations suitable for your family and diet. For me, I’ll try honey instead of white sugar. Need to keep our immune systems boosted for the winter season in Israel and honey is one of the best for that 🙂
My husband and I are now on a specific diet. The dietician said sugar is fine in moderation. I personally don’t like sweetner, so i add craisins or raisins to this salad. Its a big hit at our shabbos tables.
its nice to go on collive, and have something for women once in a while. Thanks.
healthy salad, lots of greens, organic taste better, broccoli sprouts, cucumbers, small seedless, carrots grates with a peeler, extra virgin olive oil, lemon, himayamin fine salt(dr. fraiman, google it he’s frum with r.flammer kosher stamp, doesn’t raise the blood sugar),mix it up,yum sometimes l add cut up baked chicken cultet,in the salad, actually you could add anything with the salad, cooked brown rice or even baked salman fish
2 tsp sugar = 3/4 tsp Truvia {stevia powder – the prest brand,
without maltodextrin}. You can also just cut the amount of
sugar in half. Trust me , it’ll be just fine.
my daughter makes this and she adds peanut butter to give it a creamer taste.
DELICIOUS!
just made it!
That was quick and easy!
Thanks Bitayavon! what a pleasure
I am a subscriber to bitayavon, the mag is always filled with delicious recipes and tons of info on all types of food, including many healthy dishes. Keep it up!
this was made up by my mother we have a chabad house in Manhattan and we had a lot of ppl and she didn’t have a enough food so she put what ever ingredients in the house she had and created this salad but the dressing doesn’t have sugar its soy souse brown rice vinegar olive oil!!!!! and btw it comes out better when u toast the sesame seeds on the top of the stove
You might want to replace the sugar with stevia powder
I have had this salad and it may have a lot of sugar but its a good way to get people to eat vegetables and it tastes awesome!!
if you dont like sugar, just omit it and this salad is very healthy. it is not behind the times to have some sugar; it is all about moderation. Use less or don’t use it at all.
This salad looks delicious! Always looking for new salad recipes…definitely gonna make it;)
Tried and tasted 😛 very delish! Thanks bitayavon
had this salad in south africa many times – its awesome!!

thats a LOT of sugar, even for my family. Can’t you come up with things that are health promoting? This recipe is behind the times. We now have found out what sugar and white vinegar can do. We want to get healthy recipes
