A young Jewish boy had his yarmulka snatched off his head Monday morning in Crown Heights.
The 8-year old victim was walking to school when 2 12-year old black boys approached him and stole his yarmulka off his head, police said.
After a short canvass of the area was conducted by police, the two boys were located inside the school at M S 61 at 400 Empire Boulevard.
The boys’ parents were called to the precinct, along with the school Dean.
The boys were taken into custody and charged with grand larceny, Police said.

they thought it was funny he was waiting for the bus to go to school and they came along and took off his yammukah and laughed and thought it was funny and they ran off went to school. the point was that they cant get away with this we are entering the summer it taught them a lesson. and the rest of class when they went to arrest them.

I’m assuming you have not lived in this neighbor hood long or at all. They know we are ‘not that bad’, we don’t have to show them. In fact it’s precisely because they know that we don’t assault and intimidate and do violence that they feel brave enough to continually harass this community. A sad fact but it’s just the nature of the beast. I’m sure you mean well- but we have nothing to prove to anyone.
They should have been charged with a hate crime, and as a punishment made to do some kind of cimmunL functions with a Jewish organization perhaps, so they can get to relate and acknowledge that we are not that bad after all. But, the argument that they are just twelve years old, my son was held up at gun point by a twelve year old kid.
In that school, MS 61. Many of the kids are wonderful and some are clearly headed in the wrong direction.
Yidden are a tough bunch, we’ve made it through quite a lot more than this. Hope the kid is alright and his parents used it as an opportunity to teach him well. Hope the little black kids get on track.
Instead of giving them a record with punishment, why not have them read three age appropriate books about Jews and Jewish history, and write reports on them. Much more likely to bring about change. At 12 y.o., theses are children acting from ignorance and prejudice.
They are probably bullies and pull these shenanigans all the time on their classmates. They went too far and thought they can play their games on random people in the street and now they will learn the hard way.
As I see it, we did their entire school a big favor. These kids will get disciplined and think twice before bullying people.
For those who were confused or wondering, the boys were charged with grand larceny because they stole a religious article. It didn’t qualify as a hate crime because they only laughed and didn’t say anything hateful. The purpose of arresting them is to deter more such behavior from them or their peers. I believe children should not even dream of doing such crimes against people from other communities (Jewish kids would never). The only way for that to happen is if there are deterrents.

If something is stolen directly from or off a person it qualifies as grand larceny regardless of the value of the object.
I see many young children walking to and from school by themselves. Unfortunately with this situation and others, I really think we need to have younger children walking in groups and/or with escorts at all times. 8 is very young to be out alone.

Who is fact-checking these articles? Grand larceny constitutes property exceeding $1,000 in value. Do you actually believe an eight year old was walking around wearing a $1,000 yarmulka? Not to mention the fact that, if true, entering the two older boys into the penal system for a mean-spirited but legally insubstantial offense only breeds anger, distrust, financial hardship, and potentially actual crime down the road. How many of you didn’t play a prank or even take something that wasn’t yours as a child? Were you arrested and charged with a crime for it? Have some sense.

It’s not the item’s money value that’s the issue here. A antisemitic hate crime was committed and a victim has been traumatized. If our neighbors” care about good relations they’d stop preaching antisemitic hate to their kids all the time.
Is this article accurate? What they did was cruel at worst, stupid at best. Do they really deserve a criminal record over this though? I don’t see how throwing the book at two 12 year olds will do anything for our community’s relationship with our neighbors. Plus grand larceny as the charge doesn’t even make sense.
