By a concerned Crown Heights resident
I’ve been wanting someone to write this for a very long time, but months have passed and barely anything has been said, so I guess I will do it myself.
I know I’m not the only one who notices the “occasional” crime update article on this website, titles like:
“Gang Of 4 Teenagers Attack and Harass in Crown Heights”, “Jewish Man Mugged at Knifepoint in Crown Heights”, “Jewish Man Assaulted In Unprovoked Attack”, “Bochur Stabbed Friday Night in Crown Heights”
And the list goes on…
What is extremely upsetting to me is that once I started noticing these articles, I began to realize that these are far more frequent than we would like to admit.
Take notice to how many of these articles you see a month, these antisemitic targeted attacks are happening practically every other week, if not twice in one.
The image attached to this article is merely screenshots I gathered in a couple of minutes just going back a few months of this year (and is not including home invasions, store break-ins/vandalism etc).
I don’t have much to say. But I do have a lot of questions.
How long will we keep on taking this like a bunch of spineless cowards? Can we wake up and realize that these aren’t “one off” random attacks, we are CONSTANTLY being targeted. I do not feel safe, nor do I feel that my family is, living and walking through the streets of our own neighborhood (!!).
I also do not understand why we don’t see the world at large, from corporate to social media, speak of the constant targeting and random brutal attacks we deal with regularly. The only rational explanation I can possibly think of is that they simply aren’t informed about the horrors that go on on these streets, because WE refuse to acknowledge how bad the situation actually is and speak up.
We can continue to pride ourselves in not falling prey to the “victim mentality”, but there’s a fine line between trying to be “the bigger person”, and becoming the pushover.
The reality is that for many years we dealt with knock-out “games”, unprovoked attacks, and muggings, and now we are seeing an alarming increase in stabbings and knife crimes, and just yesterday there was a story involving a gun. What exactly are we waiting for? Will it take another, more drastic form of violence, G-d forbid, to wake us up?!.
Where are all the Crown Heights community activists, with all the important connections with elected officials, constantly filling my news feed?
Are we, the Crown Heights residents only important when it comes to an election? Somehow then, the streets of Crown Heights suddenly become relevant, as they drive their speaker cars filling our blocks with the sounds of targeted Yiddish messaging asking for our vote. What has any of it done for us?
I’m sick and tired of being expected to quietly accept this as the reality.
I want answers, I want change, and I want to feel safe in my own neighborhood [that I pay an arm and a leg to live in, by the way]. Is that too much to ask?
P.S. It goes without saying that we all have tremendous gratitude to the dedicated volunteers of Shmira and Shomrim for their unbelievable devotion to keeping our streets safe. In the name of the entire Crown Heights community, thank you, thank you, thank you, for all that you do.

To the author of this article, I advise you not to waste your time and energy on trying to fix the crime issue, it will never be fixed.
Rather, put your focus and energy on finding a suitable and safe place to live with a better quality of life and more affordable as well.
The safety of the Crown Heights community should be everyone’s concern, especially fellow Lubavitchers. No one deserves this.
A chossid’s first priority should be to live בחצרות קדשינו!
Why exactly is it a priority to live בחצרות קדשנו? ! It’s definitely possible to be a chossid of the Rebbe and live elsewhere.
There are numerous beautiful communities to move to.
Please take your head out of the sand.
A list of chabad communities, looking to move to a community with חינוך and jobs

Because the Rebbe says it is!
Many people wanted to flee Crown Heights in the past due to the terrible crime (which was much worse then) and the Rebbe begged them to stay put.
As chassidim, the Rebbe’s words are our guiding light.
Please read the Rebbe’s sichos about staying in Crown Heights despite the danger, then say opinions.
Here is a nice collection: https://derher.org/wp-content/uploads/50-Cheshvan-5777-09.pdf
The Rebbe’s words:
מפורסמת שיטתי: 1)לא לנוס, 2) לא לעזוב את כל בנ”י שליט”א שבהשכונה לנפשם, 3) לא לעודד שונאי ישראל שם: שהצליחו במזימתם וכו’
דברי צדיקים חיים וקיימים לעד…
My opinion is known:
1) not to flee
2) not to leave the Yidden in the shechuna alone
3) not to encourage the antisemites there that they succeeded in their mission [of driving out the Jews]
A chossids first priority should be to protect his family and live somewhere safe. Maybe if there wasn’t so many people walking around to “chassidish” to care about safety or the gashmius part to living here things would be safer or people just worrying about running on shlichus. People in crown heights should wake up and look at how things are done in Williamsburg and boro park and start investing in our community instead of throwing money and time to every other inch of the world were there is already enough being done.
I see you had the misfortune of growing up as a Lubavitcher without being taught the Lubavitch (I.e. the Rebbe’s) mindset and look on the world.
I encourage you to learn, it may change your life.
Your comment makes a lot of sense from a logical perspective. But at the end of the day, the Rebbe said how 770 is בית רבינו and will be a part of the Bais Hamikdash. This has nothing to do with Mishachist… it’s based off the Rebbe’s sichos. After the 91 riots, the Rebbe didn’t say we should leave, rather live in unity. Therefor, there will, and should always be a lubavitch community in Crown Heights… so as logical as your comment is, it’s irrelevant to fixing the issue.
“ the Rebbe didn’t say we should leave, rather live in unity”
How did the Rebbe say to accomplish this?
(I’m not asking how we think it applies. I’m asking what the Rebbe suggested to accomplish this).
That’s what the Rebbe told David Dinkins at Sunday dollars. How? Not sure.
The main way is not to have a ‘us vs them” mindset- it’s not the Jewish community and the non Jewish or Black community, but One community facing issues togther. We need to join to make the neighborhood safer for everyone. There are a handful of anti violence orgs in the neighborhood that support, encourage, and teach young people who could otherwise become violent offenders. The g-d squad, sos, elite learners, etc. as a community are we supporting them and all their mentoring they do tomake sure kids don’t grow up to hurt people? The Rebbe said to increase education and… Read more »
The Rebbe wanted us to put effort into fixing Crown Heights, but not to move out no matter what!
Unfortunately, you had a hard time fulfilling the Rebbe’s directive. Don’t drag others out with you!
The Rebbe campaigned for everyone to stay when crime was much more dangerous than now.
To fix crown heights: you are unfortunately brainwashed.
Just because the Rebbe said years ago not to leave crown heights doesn’t mean it applies to now and to everyone.
I’m sure the Rebbe would advise me to move elsewhere to have a better quality of life ruchnius and gashmius .
Also, don’t pressure and bully me and everyone into doing what you think is the best and proper thing to do!
This is the reform opinion. Torah is old fashioned ch”v and doesn’t apply today. “Just because the Rebbe said years ago…” Did you read what the Rebbe said? All the reasons he gave then apply now as well, even more. Since when do I think it’s best to stay in CH? I just stated what the Rebbe thinks. How do I know what he thinks? Because he said what he thinks! How do I know what he said? Because I read the sichos and maanos! Does that offend you? I’m not the bully! Go read the sichos, read the derher… Read more »
You are not going to find the special place we have here anywhere else in Florida or Upstate. The MORE people we have here, the larger our boundaries, the safer we will be and the more likely to elect ourselves some much needed political representatives. If this has been your home, then running away, unless you are truly incapable of handling the pressures, is selling out yourself and your fellow brothers.
I don’t appreciate your unhealthy guilt trip, it’s because of people like you that have this unhealthy frum mentality where there is expressing frustration and annoyance to people who don’t think the way you do!
The other day while I’m shul, someone came collecting tzedakah and I wasn’t able to give any money, he gave me the most annoyed and angry look possible.
Understand?
Thank you for speaking up, dear Concerned Resident. I’m listening, and saying “Amen” in response.
Safety is an issue that impacts every single resident in CH. On the last couple of years we see slow but steady deterioration of the safety situation in our neighborhood.
We don’t want it to become worse. We didn’t forget the riots!!
Wake up and work with all directions now!!
If we put our focus towards community security we can actually achieve something… Community leaders wake up and smell the coffee…
I’m sorry to say this but, you also have your head in the sand.
The community leaders have not done anything in the past, even with knowing the situation is deteriorating, so in don’t believe they will do anything this time around.
The Rebbe was very upset about people leaving Crown Heights even with crime through the roof.
Head in the sand?
Someone who dedicates himself to follow the will of Hashem as was given over by His holy tzaddikim has his head way above those who put there head into the dirt of the physical world.
I personally blame the justice or injustice department. The police apprehend the perpetrators and then they are put through the revolving door process and out before one can turn around. There is no deterrent, so the perpetrators just continue with their “sport” at the victims’ and community’s expense.
This doesn’t take our community leaders off the hook:(
FRIENDS WAKE UP ! If YOU are reading this please send an email BRIAN CUNNINGHAM at [email protected]. EVEN ONE LINE! Protest the Shelter that is coming to town. FOUR Of them disguised under “supportive housing” and other feel good terms. IT WILL BE BAD! Do it for your grandkids that are moving to east flatbush, Do it for your children who walk down albany and Troy to go to Yeshiva. Even if you are in central Crown Heights you are not safe! These people will not sit nice and quiet in their apartment. THERE IS POWER IN NUMBERS. Get involved!… Read more »
Thank you for suggesting this
This Request for Proposal was done before Assembly Member Cunningham came into office. According to a January 1, 2023 article, some of the suggestions were ” Tell NYS AG James to fight against NYS eminent domain law, like she did when she was in City Council. Tell Mayor Eric Adams, that there needs to be more affordable housing for 3 bedroom apartments for families, not his “City of Yes Housing Plan which requires more studios and one bedrooms for real estate developers pocketbooks” To make a difference, people need to get more educated about Civics. That is, who is your… Read more »

Thank you for making a practical suggestion for us to do from the couch.
Not a Done Deal – NYS Empire State Development has not yet issued it’s Kingsboro (681 Calrkson) EIS environmental findings which can be challenged in Court Utica Crescent (832 Rutland) Geneal Plan# 2, issued in June’23 can also be challenged ( 4 mos to challenge decision ) NYS Assemb Cunningham can fight by asking for traffic, parking and oversaturation environmental effects with NYS Assembly investigations and parking studies. Any politician/activist that comes out and tells us with letters for who and how to vote and turns a blind eye to the crime and shelters coming to town has CHUTZPA and should be embarrassed! I shlepped my two little kids to go out to vote in the pouring rain when I mentioned to an activist what is being done about the shelters he said, ” I didn’t know about it” I will mention that I did go up to Rabbi Eli Cohen and he told me about the efforts that he expending on this subject. This is not to embarrass… Read more »
I believe that everyone has the ability to pick up and move, who ever said that it’s an easy step to do?! It will take a lot of planning and careful consideration for the future.
I sympathize with you that you couldn’t withstand the nisayon, but don’t try seducing others to follow in your footsteps.
The Rebbe instructed us chassidim to stay in Crown Heights through thick and thin, through dangerous crime and high costs.
We listen to our Rebbe no matter what!
Please read the Rebbe’s sichos.
It’s ironic how the ones who downvoted someone’s request to learn the Rebbe’s sichos think others have their heads in the sand.
Head in the sand means you get nervous when told to learn
They have to feel there is a “New” sheriff in town and real consequences It sound great , right The real problem is we have weak government in place It’s all politics zero effectiveness The only way to take care of the problem is to be proactive being preparef and trained by officials that care to take back the neighborhood by any/all means This should not be treated as just vandalism/crime this is pure terrorism pursuing one goal destroy people/communities bringing fear/lawlessness Jungle atmosphere the strongest wins/control Interesting everyone knows this groups of animals walking around always bringing intimidation, fear to… Read more »
Calling people animals is dehumanizing. The basis of all hate is seeing people as sub human. We’ve seen this before. I strongly suggest you stay away from disrespectful language like this which only makes things worse.
We don’t have strong leaders representing the basic needs of the community to the point where crime is becoming rampant. This has reached the limit. Change needs to happen! We need new community leaders and a new community council.
Amen to that!!!!
You are bringing up issues that believe it or not affect every single NYC resident. This new ‘wave’ of crime actually began in 2020 after the nation decided to riot after the George Floyd travesty and the defund the police campaign that raged as a result. Yes we may have more ‘hate’ crime than other neighborhoods but almost every neighborhood is now plagued with crime and many with gun violence and deaths as a result. This is why you see many Cure Violence groups now, trying to stem the tide of gun violence from within the community. We therefore need… Read more »
The guns are not violent–the criminals are. In fact, NY has some of the most restrictive (and likely UNCONSTITUTIONAL) gun laws in our Republic. (Yes, the USA is a Conditional Federal Republic.) Those restrictive gun laws only hurt the law abiding because CRIMINALS DON’T FOLLOW LAWS. Stop blaming guns. Blame the criminals who will not follow laws including robbery, theft, assault, etc.
I’m not sure that I support gun control, but according to all your beautiful theories, why does halacha prohibit selling weapons to goyim?
*Constitutional Federal Republic, not Conditional.
There’ll be a unity day at the park this month celebrating the brutal murder of a chabad man, and that will fix all the problems. Stop looking at the past at all these articles and embrace this bright future ahead.
Maybe the community leaders will even get invited to another dinner because of this unity park program, you never know:)
Hey
Why CH and not other Jewish areas in the City? is anyone ever thinking about that?
yes….
Sadly, there is no “new sheriff in town” and the old one is moribund.
I’ve never given this much thought and It’s really shocking now that I think about it, things only affects you when it happens to you or your family, but as jews we are brothers and sisters so it should affect us to our core and take this as serious as possible, I have a few (albeit minor) solutions we can do: 1) PEPPER SPRAY, we need to have a distribution center where everyone can get pepper spray for their own safety, (i remmber once or twice someone was giving it out to everyone in ch) it dosent fully solve the… Read more »
When the people you employ to maintain law and order, politicians and police, fail to do their jobs it becomes incumbent on each individual to maintain law and order for themselves. The only way to stop this crime wave is to arm yourselves so that you can protect yourself if attacked. Get a carry license.
Besides police and courts doing their jobs (so thugs out on bail 10 times end up in jail the second or third time instead) every single house, flats or shops need a good quality video surveillance pointing at the street. Not rocket science.
This exact collage of incidents needs to be widely publicized nationally. It should be emphasized that these are not only recent isolated events but an ongoing long standing scourge of our community that has never had representation due to cleverly manipulated districting boundaries. The reason for what is happening is that fact that literally NO ONE in the outside world knows about it. And the helpless council members in our community keep on and on (timidly and with big smiles) approaching the same local officials who are not friends of ours and are actually a big part of the problem.… Read more »
Don’t answer that. But those who know should find out if they are privately owned by people who sold us out. A Din Torah in such a case (IF such is the case) may be appropriate.
Would have an immediate affect. Obviously. The corrupted version of ‘law enforcement’ in CH – all the way through local courts- doesn’t allow for that though.
We are safer here in Eretz Yisrael than we ever were in Crown Heights, and we lived there for 30 years. As I see it, the problem is a lack of spine on your “elected” community officials. Remember the days in Williamsburg when (reputedly) miscreants were “dealt with” by some local tough guys? And in CH we watched in awe and envy while we were being robbed and attacked, with no action? The police are lazy, disinterested and most importantly, aren’t visible. The community “leaders” aren’t pressing the point with the city. And the dedicated volunteers from Shmira/Shomrim are run… Read more »
Finally , some sense! Thank you!
We don’t govern our lives by sense.
We govern it by the Torah, as taught by our tzaddikim.
The Rebbe said it’s against Torah to leave CH, so we listen.
Naaseh v’nishma
Please learn the Rebbe’s sichos about Crown Heights.
Crown heights is a great place to visit
it won’t be if everyone runs away…
The rebbe said that Israel is the safest place and encouraged people to stay there. Just saying.
One is obligated to stay there once already there.
The Rebbe actually usually discouraged people from moving to Eretz Yisroel, as well as begged people not to move out of CH.
Very nice, you agree that people should move out of CH.
But wait, the Rebbe said that people shouldn’t leave CH.
Hmm… should I listen to you or the Rebbe?
we should all learn basic self defnce if chvashalom we find ourselfs in a situation like this so we can useit for our own safety.everyone men woman and children maybe someone can can vollenteer for teaching alll the pepoal
