The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for the reported assault of a Jewish man Friday night, the eve of Shabbos, in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
As reported on COLlive.com, the incident occurred on Carroll Street near Troy Avenue.
The attacker allegedly approached two 21-year-old Yeshiva students, punching one of them in the face and leaving him with bruising and a nose injury that needed to be treated by medical staff. Following the attack, the perpetrator reportedly ran off towards Troy Avenue.
“These attacks on Jewish individuals appear to have become normalized, but we must not let this be the case – an attack on anyone based on their Jewish identity or any identity is abhorrent and should not be tolerated,” said Scott Richman, ADL New York/New Jersey Regional Director. “We hope that this reward offering will help us send that message to the community.”
Rabbi Chanina Sperlin of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council (CHJCC) hosted a meeting between the bochurim, students of the Oholei Torah Mesivta in Crown Heights, and police officers to report to the NYPD and their Hate Crimes Taskforce about the incident.
“We felt he wanted to murder us,” they told the police about the incident. “This was pure antisemitism. We have no other explanation.”
One of the bochurim was slightly injured and his glasses were broken. They thanked the police for their quick response and to the medical volunteers who treated them.
“It hurts us that the attacker roams free,” they told the police. They also met with Hate Crime investigators in their office.
Sperlin reminded the police that the man who fired a BB gun at the corner of Montgomery Street and Albany Avenue a few months ago has not yet been found.
The bochurim thanked Rabbi Sperlin and Rabbi Eli Cohen of the CHJCC for their guidance, the Shmira and shomrim neighborhood patrol groups and to their Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Moshe Silman for his support.
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
