Monday night dozens of women gathered to be inspired by Holocaust survivor Mrs. Tuky Treitel and to honor two quiet heroes of our community Mrs. Miryam Elisheva Segal and Mrs. Rivky Hafter. Early attendees received a gift of beautiful earrings from Delmar Jewelers and all enjoyed delicious fruits and salad bar courtesy of Raskin’s Fruits, beautifully arranged by Smadar Events.
Mrs. Treitel, introduced by editor-in-chief of Hachai Publishing, Mrs. Dina Rosenfeld, captivated the audience with the thrilling story of her survival, a story flowing with a young girl’s courage and strength. She described how she was saved by being sent with her little brother and cousin to live with a goyish family and how she upheld her promise to her father to be proud of her Yiddishkeit. Mrs. Treitel enchanted the audience with her humor and her practical outlook. As the evening closed, women lined up to meet Mrs. Treitel and to get her autograph in the book written about her journey, titled Tuky.
The honorees of the evening, Mrs. Miryam Elisheva Segal and Mrs. Rivky Hafter were presented with beautiful awards and each shared about their genach with the audience. Mrs. Segal talked about the incidents in her life that led her to create the Uniform Gemach and announced to a strong applause how much her Gemach has grown in recent years. “We don’t turn away any families,” Mrs. Segal explained. “Their income is none of our business.” Throughout the summer months the Gemach is open for appointments and Mrs. Segal encouraged audience members to volunteer in any capacity that they can.
Mrs. Rivky Hafter shared briefly about her children’s clothing Gemach and how much of an impact donations make for families in Crown Heights. “You can’t imagine the joy a family has when they receive matching Yom Tov outfits for their daughters – something they never could afford on their own.”
