I know what you’re thinking: Here’s yet another learning program via Zoom. Let me just scroll on.
But wait: What if this isn’t just another Zoom program, rather an opportunity to be a part of a definitive, high-quality Smicha ordination program, just recently gone online; taught by a respected Rov and Smicha teacher who has taught hundreds of students over the last 17 years?
I’m talking, of course, about the brand new Online Smicha Program at Beis Midrash Iyun Halacha, Yerushalayim, headed by Rabbi Asaf Engelman, a seasoned community rabbi and Smicha instructor.
Given the huge number of Yeshiva students, Kolel Yungerleit, and laymen who are currently spending all their time at home due to the shuttered Yeshivas, Kolels, and businesses resulting from the paralyzing effects of the virus, a major need for online Torah learning options has become apparent, with many yearning into their otherwise topsy turvy lives.
At Beis Medrash Iyun Halacha, we’ve decided to help fill that need with a special online program, which will include, amongst others: In-depth lessons, optional group sessions to learn the material from inside, source sheets, questions and quizzes for review, and occasional guest speakers giving classes on thought-provoking, modern-day topics.
The classes will be held in Hebrew, with English speaking staff to guide and explain when necessary.
Upon the successful completion of the program, Smicha ordination and final exam will be administered by Rabbis Zalman Nechemia Goldberg, a distinguished Dayan of Badatz Yerushalayim, rabbi Chaim Sholom Deutch, a veteran Rosh Kolel, Mashpia and Rov, as well as the program’s own Rabbi Asaf Engelman.
Beyond a very important addition to one’s daily learning schedule and Torah knowledge, this is a great opportunity to fulfill the rebbe’s holy request that those who are capable of learning and getting tested on advanced Halacha and receive Smicha ordination, should do so and thus become a “Rov” of his own home and kitchen at the very least, and become proficient in the most common, (and not so common), day-to-day, Kashrus issues that arise.
