Members of the Jewish community in the historic city of Hadiach in the central-east part of Ukraine were shocked to discover the Alter Rebbe’s gravesite desecrated.
Hundreds of visitors are expected to arrive in town on 24 Teves, the yahrtzeit of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Chabad-Lubavitch Chassidism and author of the holy Tanya.
“Our workers are preparing the area for the many guests and one of them discovered the vandalism,” Rabbi Shneur Zalman Deitsch, a coordinator at the gravsite, told COLlive.com.
He said books were thrown on the floor, charity boxes were broken into and windows were smashed.
“The miracle is that the Tziyun itself was not touched,” he said. “They tried to break into the Aron Kodesh but were not successful.”
The Ukrainian police were immediately called and a report was filed.
Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Segal, the Chabad Shliach in the nearby city of Poltava, is said to be in touch with the authorities waiting for results of the investigation.
