The Slovakian mission to the United Nations hosted heads of major Jewish organizations on Friday, to address the growing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
In attendance at the briefing and roundtable discussion were the UN ambassadors from Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Slovakia, Moldova, and Romania. They were joined by heads of major Jewish organizations, including Rabbi Chanina Sperlin of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel of Agudath Israel and Rabbi Moshe Hauer, president of the OU, and others.
Participants received a briefing on the situation on the ground from the Ukraine ambassador to the United Nations. Jewish leaders described the crisis facing the Jewish communities of Ukraine, who have fled the violence and have been finding refuge in many surrounding countries.
Rabbi Sperlin related about the urgent crisis facing the hundreds of Chabad Shluchim in Ukraine who are still caring for their communities, many assisting their communities as refugees in various locations.
The event focused on streamlining assistance to Ukraine and refugees fleeing to nearby countries. Participants discussed the urgent need for support, relief aid and funds for nearby countries to assist in the integration of the tens of thousands of refugees.
