President-elect Donald Trump selected former Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York on Monday to oversee the Environmental Protection Agency in his administration.
The former Republican Congressman brings a notable connection to Chabad and Jewish communities, including a longstanding friendship with Crown Heights activists and a meaningful visit to the Rebbe’s Ohel in 2022 during his run for Governor of New York.
As COLlive.com reported in September of 2022, during his visit to the Rebbe’s Ohel, Zeldin, a proud Jew and descendant of Lubavitch roots, was accompanied by Five Towns Shliach Rabbi Zalman Wolowik, Crown Heights activists Yitzchok Rimler and Max Coen, and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.
At the Ohel, Zeldin prayed and put on tefillin, honoring both the Rebbe and his own family heritage. He was also presented with a remarkable letter from the Frierdiker Rebbe addressed to his great-grandfather, R’ Moshe Efraim Zeldin, acknowledging the family’s support for Chabad Yeshivos and urging ongoing dedication to Jewish causes.
Moved by this piece of family history, Zeldin shared his commitment to carrying on this legacy. His dedication to supporting Jewish education and community resonates powerfully with those who accompanied him, and he has expressed deep appreciation for the blessing of the Rebbe’s influence.
Zeldin also visited the Crown Heights neighborhood, touring the shops on Kingston Avenue and speaking with local residents. He also visited a Sukkos party and attended the Simchas Beis Hashoeiva dancing in Crown Heights.
Recently, Zeldin once again visited the Rebbe’s Ohel, this time part of a small group who accompanied President Trump for a visit to the Rebbe’s gravesite to mark the first anniversary of the October 7th massacre in Israel.
