Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe Azman, together with a number of local community members, removed the Torah scrolls from Kyiv’s historic Brodsky Synagogue today.
“I will not leave Ukraine and I will not leave the Jews alone. They need me. People are hungry for bread, the elderly have no medicine, and the children are in distress,” Rabbi Azman said.
The decision to remove the priceless Torahs came in the wake of the repeated bombings in recent days in the capital and a steady Russian advance towards the city. Being that the Russians’ fire on the area has been indiscriminate, with homes, educational institutions, and other civilian infrastructure being hit, there is a real fear that the synagogue could be damaged. Similarly, as civilians are abandoning their properties, a new worry about widespread looting has also emerged.
Over the last 11 days of the war, Rabbi Moshe Azman organized trips out of the country for countless refugees, while himself staying behind in Ukraine’s capital. The Chief Rabbi is working tirelessly that members of the community have where to go, whether in Europe or in Eretz Yisroel.

Chazak chazak
Rabbi azman, what a man!!
Where did they take the Torahs to?
he had built a little refuge back in 2014 for the Donetsk refugees right outside of kiev, called Anatevka (from Fiddler on the Roof). the community has been hiding there since the war, so my best guess is that they brought the torahs there as well.
visited back there in 2016 when visiting family with my parents. very surreal what he does for the community.
What looks like a movie is a painful reality
Hashem protect your people and holy Sifrei Torah
