On Sunday, the 3rd day of Chanukah, the Newman family were on their way to a Chanukah event at a nearby Chabad House. The quick 10-minute drive turned out to be a way longer journey – and a more exciting one too.
The Newmans, who serve as Chabad Shluchim in Beverlywood, California, were one of the many vehicles stuck in standstill traffic.
The cause was the passing motorcade of President Joe Biden, who was in Los Angeles for a fundraising event and to pay a Shiva call to the family of screenwriter and film producer Norman Lear.
They had no idea the I-10 West Freeway would be closed. According to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), “For security reasons, there is no advance announcement to the public regarding ramp closures related to a visit by a U.S. president or vice president.”
At first, the Newmans rolled down their vehicle’s windows and blasted Chanukah melodies for others to enjoy. With cars standing idle, Mendel Newman (14) and Chaim Newman (12) started dancing in the street. Another Chossid soon joined from his car.
Next, they reached for the Tefillin and approached the nearest car. The young couple in the car was Jewish. They were on their way tot he airport, but would happy to do a Mitzvah. He put on Tefillin with a smile, and she received Shabbos candles.
The Newman boys also gave them “shliach mitzvah gelt,” to be messengers to deliver Tzedaka at their destination and make their trip a mission for a Mitzvah.
The Newmans were soon putting on Tefillin on other drivers who voluntarily stepped out of their cars and waved over the bochurim. “People took out their phones and were snapping away, proud to share these moments with their families and friends,” COLlive.com was told.
Despite being stuck in traffic, people present felt elevated thanks to the Lubavitcher’s initiative.

Poshut chasiddim
I love this!!!
Now, that Biden has a share in so many mitzvos (even if involuntarily), I am worried that his chances of reelection go higher
What a great use of unexpected time! You’ve really taken the Rebbe’s message to heart! Kudos to your parents! They should always have chassidishe nachas from you!!
