What began through a sense of camaraderie and love between fellow Lubavitchers serving in the Israeli army, has blossomed into a full-fledged home away from home.
With numerous Jewish young adults enlisting in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from the diaspora – a nice amount of them from Chabad families, a special title has been coined for them: Chayalim bodedim (lone soldiers).
After arriving in Israel with little or no money and few, if any, relatives to turn to, life in Israel can be challenging at best, says Mordechai Botnick, 20, who was honorably discharged from the IDF after earning the rank of Sergeant.
The little money these soldiers receive from the army is hardly enough to cover basic necessities, let alone a proper Shabbos or Yom Tov meal, the Canadian native says.
Seeing the need, Botnick opened an organization called “The Rebbe’s Infantry” from his apartment in the Nachlaot neighborhood in Jerusalem and devotes his time to filling a gap, the effects of which he experienced first-hand when he first came from Ottawa.
“Our mandate is to provide lone soldiers with a warm, loving and inspiring Shabbos meal in a Chassidish atmosphere,” he tells COLlive.com.
From the first glimpse of the Shabbos candles and a melodious Sholom Aleichem to dessert; from fish, salads, chicken and cholent to inspiring nigunim, l’chaims and farbrengens, Botnick wishes to provide these unique soldiers with an inspiring Shabbos and Yom Tov.
“These meals have actually been one of the biggest things I’ve looked forward to during the hard weeks of training,” says Shmuly Holzman of Crown Heights, praising Botnick’s culinary skills.
For others, it was not only the good food. “Mordy’s is where I can call home, where a soldier can always find a listening ear and a home cooked meal,” says a fellow Canadian, Zushi Goldberg of Toronto.
Gedaliah Ort of Monsey, NY said he’s had “tiresome weeks in the army with stress and hardship, and Mordy’s meals have been a major source of joy, Torah, inspiration and friendship, for me and many other boys guarding Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael.”
MOVING ON
While Botnick plans to begin stuying for smicha rabbinical ordination, he says he’s invested in this project that began a year ago.
“I was brought up in Ottawa where my father is a Shliach,” he says. “There are currently around 50 non Israeli Lubavitchers serving in the IDF and someone needs to look out for those who are putting their lives on the line for other Jews.”
He is asking the public to support the cause with donations that will allow him to better coordinate and deliver the following services: Guest speakers to encourage religious interaction, meals and farbrengens, financial assistance for soldiers in dire need and a relaxed chassidishe home away from home.
“Mordy’s is a place where I don’t have to feel awkwardly out of place like some lone soldier at meals. I really feel like I’m supposed to be there, like I’m with family,” said Avi Stein of Los Angeles, CA.
To support this endeavor, send a check to Mordy Botnick, 309 Crown St. Brooklyn NY 11225 or send a donation via PayPal, acct. [email protected].

It is really nice to see how much support Everyone is showing for this cause, however you all have to realise that each meal costs more than what this cause is recieving, as a close friend who served together with mordy and has eaten by him countless times, i know that he has put every last dollar of his own money towards the meals and he needs your tzedaka to continue these amazing and inspiring meals. please give everything you can to help keep these meals going…
in this zechus may we see moshiach bekorov mamash…
When dealing with pikuach nefesh issues, our boys in the IDF do not worry about such mundane issues. Let the Religious Zionist soldiers deal with it.
what do you think this is? a chat?

we all miss you so so so so much.
aidle says “chapet”

May you be blessed in all your endeavors. I have been to countless meals and have always felt welcome by you I can not express the difference he has made to me alone – in my home away from home, not forgetting the close friendships I have forged around his shabbos table.
He can always be relied upon giving up every morsel of his free time to run around and help everyone even putting himself out financially. It’s time to give back. 🙂
I cant with to see you!! I’m getting a lot more work done on my end, its great that so many people are supporting the idea. Let’s hope some big donations come in!!
Thank you Mordy for dedicating yourself and opening up your home to all us soldiers. These meals are what helped me get through the tough weeks in the army. It’s what keeps me going when I feel alone or away from home. i love these meals because I always know that when I come home there are others in the same situation as I am and that no matter how hard it gets, Mordy is always there to look out for us. as a lone soldier i sometimes have trouble getting ready for shabbos. sometimes i even get home at the last minute and i dont always have time to go shopping or do my… Read more »

bs’d Having our son so far away, serving in the most prestigious unit – 13 Golani – in the most important army in the world can be challenging…… We daven for his safety and that of his fellow soldiers. We worry about him constantly and have been forced to intensify our connection with Ha Kadosh Baruch Hu, thereby enhancing our Avodas Hashem…. Our son’s Avodas Hashem has intensified tremendously and he has grown by leaps and bounds, a proud Lubavitcher Chossid serving body, heart and soul in the IDF and we are intensely proud of the noble decision that our… Read more »
Throughout my service I haven’t really felt like a ‘Lone soldier’. There was always ‘Mordy’s place’ where everyone always knew they were welcome, like a home away from home.
Dear Mordy,
Keep up the incredible work, and may you merit only great blessings from here on out. Peace and love.
My so was a lone soldier. Mordy and his friends made the most beautiful sheva brochas that my son and his new wife had. I am glad that Mordy is receiving kovet for the wonderful and warm work he does.
He should go from strength to strength.
Judy Rosenberg Charney, Toronto
Mordy, you make the most beautiful sushi. You outdid your teacher. I am so happy you are sharing your delicious food and more importantly your open and kind heart. You are an inspiration to us. We miss you!!
Mordy’s Shabbos meals are always filled with great company, great food, fascinating conversation and the environment is like a ‘home away from home’ that’s always warm and welcoming to us as lone soldiers
Coming to Mordys home for Shabbos was like having my family with me in Israel, not needing to worry about having a top notch meal every shabbos
Shabbos at Mordy’s is the whole package- great food, better company topped off with that special chilling and spiritual Shabbos vibe.
“I wish I could explain how it is by the Botnick meal for Chabad lone soldiers, but unfortunately I can’t. How can one describe the homie feeling of entering a apartment in Nachlaot, to this big Shabbos table surrounded by twenty or thirty Chabad lone soldiers, singing nigunim, and talking about their experiences of the week? And the food? Don’t tell my mom but it’s one of the tastiest, if not the tastiest meal I’ve ever eaten! (And I’m not just saying that b/c I was I the field all week eating tuna…)
The meals that Mordy makes are always a pleasure to be by – whether it’s the people that attend or the food that he prepares, it’s always awesome. Thanks Mordy!
Please remember the Rebbe asked that every chayil in Tzhal should have a letter in a Sefer Torah Klali! One only needs to sign up the soldiers name and mother’s name. Lhatchila they should pay a symbolic sum ,like a dime, half a shekel to make a kinyan. There is a Sefer Torah klali in the Kiryote by Rabbi Oirichman! or names can be sent to or [email protected], or [email protected]
These meals are very inspiring, I always feel like im back home with my family when i’m at one of the meals because its like my family-away-from-home. it’s also extremely inspiring to see so many people who have come from the comfort of their homes, given away 3 years of their lives to protect jewish lives in the jewish land, all lone soldiers, coming together to have a delicious Shabbat meal together. These meals have actually been one of the biggest things iv’e looked forward to during the hard weeks of training.
Sadly many temimim feel lost and “go out to experiment”. For many the army can serve as an itegral step in the process of finding one’s direction. Obviously it comes with risk. This unprecedented service seems poised to minimize the risk by anchoring the Chayalim to their roots. By offering a combination of physical & spiritual sustanance in a clearly Chabad atmosphere, a connection to the Rebbe is maintained. This service applies the adage “חסידים זיינן ניט עלענט” –not even the חיילים “בודדים”. Keep up the great work and may it grow מחיל אל חיל. –an impressed relative.
Looking good in your Uniform, Kinn 😉
to mordechele, new baby brother, #13 kein yirbu
How dare you criticize a good thing and implying that it is like a non-kosher bird with evil midos? Chesed begins with people you know and grows outward. There is nothing wrong with helping friends before strangers. You just look to knock others instead of saying a good word. I think you have issues with yourself which leads you to knock others. You offend me!
mordi’s inspirational shabbos meals are what help me get through long weeks in the army cuz I know when I come home I will have a great home cooked meal with lots of soldiers in the same situation as I am. soldiers that don’t want to hustle the little time they have from when they get off base till when shabbos starts to do all the little things you need before going back to base and with mordy I don’t have to worry cuz I no he’s always there for me so with that I would like to say thank… Read more »
which of the boys is Mordy in the picture, please tell.
is that all you think about Kol Isha maybe we should worry about all the other issues that we have in our community before we start bashing the IDF. Besides these guys were in a religious combat unit where there are no girls. SO THERE IS NO KOL ISHA. YOU SHOULD BE MORE WORRIED ABOUT WHATS GOING ON IN YOUR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD!!!!!!!!
can some 1 please send me mordechai’s email address as i m not on facebook.
Hey everyone, thank you very much for your support, if anyone would like to get in touch with me, you can email me at [email protected], also for any contributions my paypal account is [email protected]. My phone number in Eretz Yisroel is 0526132170. In the merit of your help, may you
achieve physical and spiritual success in all your activities, and may we merit the coming of Moshiach speedily in our time.
To #59:
B”H I have made countless new friends since the beginning of this organization and with your help I hope to make many more!!
Yashar Koach and all the best!
The IDF now FORCES our boys to listen to kol isha and watch women preformances. What can we do to help our boys?? Oy the golus, AD MOSAI – MOSHIACH NOW!
go Ari and Chaim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
or if not helping there parents that supported the for so many years??
What a way to show hakoras hatov. you guys are defending your parents’ eretz yisroel. k
Rashi says this bird is called chassida because it does chessed with its friends. Meforshim point out that it is a non-kosher bird because it ONLY does chessed with its friends.
I hope this ” Soldier Looks Out For Friends” also includes others who were not (yet) his friend!
It’s not always so clear at first glance. It just so happens to be that one of these soldiers just finished smicha and is now teaching in a Lubavitch mesivta. So, please don’t comment until you know the whole picture.
What a great shlichus!! Kol Hakavod!!
I didn’t even have to look closely at the photo to know that Chaim Silber was in it. Haha…you’re awesome bro.
Chaiyolim boddedim is not only from chutz l`aretz it`s also the name given to soldiers from within eretz yisroel i know because my three boys served in tzava and depending in what state you go to the armyand make enough noise and in what part of the army you serv one can get different typs of z`chuyot but one must fight for it also it dependes on how long one is going for but even so this sounds great idea and col ha`coved may you go from strengh to strengh and keep on looking after thease boys because they need… Read more »
Saw it with my own eyes! Nachas! We are proud of you, Mordy.
Wow this article comes at a perfect time . We just had threats against our fellow Shluchim and here is a group of IDF members who can guard them .
to # 26 are you completely stupid? why do you think everybody has to go to yeshiva or help out their parents? thats exactly the problem with alot (im not gonna say all, but i think almost all) of bochurim and parents etc. that they think that have to “stay in the system” and do certain things to “fit in” and “be normal”. do you have any idea how many bochurim (and others) ruin and waste a number of years, and some of their best years (bohur years), “fitting in” so people that think like you can be happy?!?! (i… Read more »
You’ve made a meaningul and beautiful and very needed shlichus here in nachlaot! You are doing an awesome job, in the process of which you are a great example to your guests.
My only complaint is that your so busy with this every single shabbos, that we hardly get to have you here at our shabbos table.
Thanks for being such an inspiration to so many!
May you be blessed with all the resources you need for this shlichus, and all your worthy endeavors, in ruchnius and gashmius!
Go Ari and Chaim!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mordy is the guy with the gun, third from the right, with the smiley face balloon right behind him. His devotion to feeding the soldiers is unreal! I am not sure how he balances his long days while cooking DELICIOUS homemade foods for anyone who knocks on his door! He is AWESOME! With love, the Davidson’s in Crown Heights.
