Weissfish had a steel rod inserted into his back before marriage and generally experienced no pain. That is, until recently, when something changed. Suddenly the young father of 7 was completely debilitated. Every moment of every day he is now in excruciating pain. Unable to stand, unable to walk, unable to even feed or bathe himself, his “tzaddekes wife” Zelda tends to his every need. The couple are, of course, now unemployed. Elazar can barely move, and Zelda must be by his side at all times. The family’s situation has deteriorated rapidly.
Mr. & Mrs. Weissfish have not resigned themselves, however, to a future of misery. There is a ray of hope: Doctors have told Elazar that there is a surgery that can eliminate his pain, and return his life to normal. The bad news is that the procedure costs $100,000, far beyond the means of the family that is now squandering in poverty.
