He was known simply as Schwartzie. Beloved by every Jew, whether Reform, Conservative, or the most prominent Jewish group of all, “Jews for Nothing.”
Rabbi Shlomo Schwartz AKA Schwartzie, had a unique way of connecting to everyone he met due to his incomparable Ahavas Yisroel, and acceptance of each person exactly as they were.
Chasidim, Shluchim, and Bale Batim will want to read about Schwartzie’s fascinating life. The new edition is available for purchase on Amazon with Free Shipping for only $18.18. It is also available at Judaica World and Hamafitz.
Now in its third print, Schwartzie’s son Rabbi Mendel Schwartz, current director of the Chai Center, reports that the book has resonated particularly with Lubavitchers.
“Lubavitchers are always seeking inspiration,” he explains. “Our Rebbe urged us to continuously improve and push ourselves, so we constantly strive to be better today than we were yesterday.” This book has also done very well with bale Teshuvas who seek meaning on a daily basis.
“My father began writing this book before his passing in 2016, amidst his battle with cancer,” Rabbi Mendel says. Schwartzie did not have the time to complete his memoir, his son hired professional ghostwriters to complete the book in his father’s voice.
Throughout his life, Schwartzie faced struggles familiar to many, but was always a deeply inspired chossid whose inspiration was contagious to all who entered his path. Each page of “I Love When that Happens” brims with enthusiasm. Schwartzie stood out wherever he went, and he was unique in the world of shluchim. He joined Lubavitch at age 19, and was sent at age 24 to be the first ever shliach on college campus, by the Rebbe upon the request of Rabbi Boruch S. Cunin.
Read about Schwartzie’s struggles as a yeshiva student, his life as a Beatnik in the 50’s, his time sleeping in the Baumgarten basement, and his eventual embrace of Lubavitch through Itche Springer.
The memoir offers insight into Schwartzie’s relationship with the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Yichudisin never published, his lifelong love affair with Israel, his ability to connect (and have fun) with people of all ages and walks of life, and his enormous spiritual capacity. Parts hilarious, parts heart-breaking, and always breathtaking, Schwartzie’s stories are a mural of a life filled with action and meaning.
The third edition has a BONUS CHAPTER including ten pages of history and memories at the first ever Chabad house in the 70’s. It illustrates how Schwartzie ran a drug rehab center, his fights with the moonies and Hare Krishnas, and his memories walking his children on Friday nights through Westwood village.
Discover how Schwartzie dealt with anti-Semitism, how his recovering addicts served as waiters for 650 attendees at Chabad’s Passover Seders, and so many more hilarious and wonderful stories you will not want to miss.

When I read the book, I could almost hear Schwartzie saying the words. Everything is written in his unique exciting style of speaking. Highly recommended!
I remember him when he first came to LA. Great person.
