Over two hundred students packed into the Schottenstein Chabad House at Ohio State University last week to show their appreciation to David and Eda Schottenstein for the beautiful, newly remodeled kitchen they sponsored.
The room was filled with smiles as 2 students shared their thoughts on how the Kitchen has changed their lives and brought them closer to their Jewish roots. Everyone rejoiced in the excitement of a newly renovated kitchen that just means more delicious food for the hundreds of students who come to the Chabad house each week.
The Ohio State University is the largest university in the US with over 60,000 students and only 2,500 Jewish students. To say that the Jewish freshmen feel “overwhelmed” is an understatement. But the resounding consensus was that the Chabad House, led by Rabbi Zalman and Sarah Deitsch , helps them fit in, feel less lost and feel at home. The Schottenstein’s benevolence is definitely serving that purpose.
David and Eda came to the Chabad House for a Shabbos 2 years ago and were stunned by the crowd and the wonderful ambiance. He was immediately motivated to help make improvements so more Jews could benefit from what the Chabad House offers. The kitchen was his first project. He graciously sponsored the renovations in honor of his parents Tuvia and Lea, who came to the event and shared in the excitement.
New floors, new walls, new stainless steel appliances, and state of the art equipment are but a few of the additions and changes that will help the Chabad House feed hundreds for Shabbos, yomtov and events throughout the week.
Together David and his father nailed in a Tzedakah box, according to the Rebbe’s directive, with an explanation by Rabbi Areyah Kaltmann, the executive Director of Chabad in Columbus, on the importance of this custom.
