Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s downfall appears to have nudged Israel and the Palestinians toward some common ground: Neither side seems to think now is the time for brave moves toward peace.
For Israel, Mubarak’s departure has left behind an all-consuming worry that the influence of Islamic extremists will grow, and the two countries’ historic 1979 peace treaty could be in jeopardy, AP reports.
Lubavitch Chassidim are now reminded how the Rebbe warned of the dangers of the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty, which is now at the mercy of unknown powers in Egypt together with the large army arsenal.

Days after the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat in 1970, the Rebbe was quoted in the Israeli newspaper Shearim calling to cancel the “concessions agreement.”
“Now is the opportune and necessary time to annul the concessions agreement of Camp David is order to prevent in advance the terrible troubles that may come from the fulfilling the winthdrawl,” the Rebbe was quoted as saying.
“Now, with the removal of the one with which the concessions agreement was signed with, from heaven was also removed another cause for the cancellation of the agreement.”
COLlive’s report last week about the Rebbe warning that Egypt can turn into an Islamist Iran was quoted by many Chabad Shluchim in their weekly email to members and supporters.
