Residents living behind Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Heights were notified that renovations will soon begin on a townhouse that will once again serve as a study hall.
“We will soon be starting with the demolition our premises,” the undated letter signed by Merkos L’intonei Chinuch read which COLlive.com has verified as authentic.
The adjacent properties at 1451 and 1453 Union Street, directly behind 770 Eastern Parkway, once housed the kollel which operates under the auspices of the Rebbe’s Mazkirus. Directly overseeing it is Merkos and the Machne Israel Development Fund, both chaired by Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky.
After the building fell into despair, the kollel led by Rabbi Yosef Heller moved to the upper floor of the building down the street on the corner of Union Street and Kingston Avenue.
“The demolition will take some time and during the construction work there will be some noise,” the letter from Merkos to neighbors read. “At this time, we would like to ask for your understanding during the renovation period.”
A person involved in the work said the current renovations will be smaller in scale, so as to bring the kollel back to the original location, yet with an eye to the future, bearing in mind the larger scale renovations which will expand 770.
The Kollel’s current leadership is spearheading this project, with plans for the Kollel to be moved to its former location in a renovated building. They also plan to make the new building available to the community as a Beis Medrash learning center in the evening hours.

How will this be part of a future 770 expansion?
maybe that they will be able to connect the back of the house to a larger 770 and then the kollel will be in 770 itself
Mazkirus?
yep…
Pls can you renovate/upgrade the women section and do proper ventilation system and new bathrooms there. Thank you
Unfortunately the gabboim still have control of the shul so you would have to ask them to do renovation
The latest court decision has rabbi yehuda krinsky in control not the gabboim. Thats why the expansion is going ahead i strongly suspect. So ask rabbi krinsky about the the ladies shul. The hole in the roof needs a permanent fix to avoid flooding, too
It’s about time!!!!!!!
Why the secret who in fact was so kind to let them use the upper floor where the collel moved in to on “ Kingston corner union?”
It is very important to mention that once the demolition is over they will be building a TEMPORARY trailer/building for the kolel in that location so that they can always move it for when 770 will be expanded.
The letter is not on any official letterhead. There is no typed name or title of the signer identifying who signed the letter. There is a word erroneously missing in the letter – something Rabbi Y Krinsky would probably not let slip by on something he signs. Letter says “do not hesitate to contact us” and there’s no contact info. So much of this letter indicates that this is not as it seems to be. Also, buildings don’t fall into despair, that’s an idiom that refers to depression of sorts. Buildings fall into disrepair. More importantly, the building didn’t fall… Read more »
Rabbi yehudah krinsky won control of 770 from the gabbaim in the latest court decision about a year ago. Somehow, this got lost with covid breakout. Maybe, now he is starting to take over, but doesnt want to fully make it public
