Rabbi Pinchas Cunin, long-time resident of Crown Heights has passed away Wednesday, 21 Tammuz, 5772.
He was 72.
Rabbi Cunin was the grandson of the Chosid Rabbi Menachem Mendel Cunin who helped establish Chabad in America.
Born in the Bronx, NY, Rabbi Cunin and his brother Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin were sent to learn in the Lubavitcher Yeshiva at Bedford and Dean, moving into the dormitory from the young age of 13.
As a young man, Rabbi Cunin memorized many hundreds of the Rebbe’s Maamorim by heart, and spent time teaching and reciting them for others.
For the past 10 years, he was involved in the organization “Chasdei Avos,” volunteering his time to visit the homebound and elderly, learning Torah with them in their homes.
Rabbi Cunin is survived by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom serve as shluchim in the US and Canada.
He is survived by his wife Bina and children: Shevy Liberow – Crown Heights, Chana Harlig – Upland, CA, Suri Marasov – Montreal, Yentie Zaltzman – Toronto, Rochel Zirkind – Montreal, Menachem Mendel Cunin – Reno, Nevada, Nechama Dina Weiss – Topanga, CA, Shaina Munitz – Crown Heights, Aaron Meir Cunin – S Jose, CA, Devorah Leah Chein – S Cruz, CA, Yosef Yitzchok Cunin – Crown Heights, and Sholom Dovber Cunin – Westwood, CA.
He is also survived by his only brother, Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin, Head Shliach of the West Coast.
The levaya passed by 770 at 9:30 am, on the way to Philadelphia.
Rabbi Cunin will be buried at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Philadelphia, near his grandparents Mordechai and Esther Wilsker and their family members.

my grandfather was very devoted to his grandchildren.he would call my brother here in toronto every night without fail. and when that brother went to yeshivah he learned with the next and the next. all 5 of my brothers had the z”chus of learning with him every night. whenever i would pick up the phone he would take out a couple minutes to review my chumash with me and ask me about school.
Rabbi Cunin was a real pnimi who shared his hashkafos with his children and grandchildren and those he learned with. His clear thinking and wise advice will continue to resonate with those who were privileged to have a relationship with him.

All of the comments are scratching the surface of this man. He was a pnimi!! There was no show, no bells and whistles. Just the truth! What he held and believed no one can change his mind. He devoted much of him time to learning himself and with his children when they were young and with his grandchildren. He loved learning Torah and chasiddus in the serenity of nature where the city hustle bustle won’t distract him. He was kovea itim latotah on a daily basis – shacharis and arvis as required. Those (few) in the Toronto community who got… Read more »
I remember him coming to visit for Yom tov, I would always observe the way he gave so much attention to his grandchildren learning with them and telling Chasidshe stories between Mincha and Marrive..
B”H I was in CGI in 1958 . Rabbi Cunin was a young bochur whose birthday is at the end of the summer. He insisted on taking care of the laundry rather than have a bunk of kids so that he could spend all his time on learning ( in between making loads) because he had to prepare himself for his birthday yechidus. He spent endless hours of learning in anticipation of a yechidus that would probably last not more than a minute or two.I was blown away at this bochur’s ibergegebenkeit ! How envious I was and how proud… Read more »
everything he did was meah veevchod, he was a ka na ee full of emes and zrizus. an outstanding dugma chaya of a chosid and yiras shamayim . an inspiring standard bearer i remember rabbi cunin from bais rivkah and his dedication and devotion. only hashem will be able to fill this void because there can never be a substitute or replacement. his incredible children and grandchildren are the greatest testimony to the substance and quality of his life. the binah yesairah of his aishes chayil are the material of the meforshim. hamakom yenachem eschem as it will be speedily… Read more »
