Hourly Megillah readings were held throughout Purim day near Bondi Beach, the site of the Chanukah terror attack, offering passersby the opportunity to stop in and hear the Megillah.
The readings took place from early morning until evening, with a new reading beginning every hour so that anyone in the area could participate. Approximately 150 people attended over the course of the day, with volunteers from the community stepping forward to read the Megillah throughout the program.
Founder Rabbi Noach Koncepolski noted that this may have been the first time such an initiative was held in Sydney.
The gathering was held just meters from the well known Bondi Beach footbridge, a location that in recent times has been associated with difficult memories. Organizers said that hearing the Megillah and celebrating Purim there brought a sense of light and unity to the area.
The readings were dedicated in memory of Dan Elkayam, who was known for his strong connection to Jewish life and for making a special effort each year to hear the Megillah on Purim.
In addition to local participants, a number of non Jewish visitors and Jewish tourists passing through the area also stopped to listen and learn about Purim, including travelers from Bulgaria, France, Canada, and other countries.
