Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz has visited the Rebbe‘s Ohel at the Old Montefiore Cemetery in Cambria Heights, Queens, on Wednesday.
Katz, who is in New York to attend the General Assembly of the United Nations, arrived with an entourage wearing a black yarmulka.
He prayed at the Ohel, a holy pilgrimage site for many Jews from around the world and even non-Jews. He was later seen reciting Kaddish.
“I came today to the tziyun on the yartzeit of my father Meir Z”L – 25th of Elul, and during the year of mourning over my mother Malka,” he later wrote to his Chabad friend, activist Zalman Wolf.
“I asked from the Rebbe for the success of the nation of Israel and my family, and that he should bless me to represent the nation of Israel and the state of Israel with honor at my speech tomorrow at the UN,” the Minister said.
Katz will be speaking instead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who is entangleed in coalition negoritations following the stalemate results of Israel’s general elections.
