The Tishrei fleamarket won’t be happening this year.
The New York Police Departement won’t be allowing any vendors to sell their merchandise during the upcoming month of Tishrei in the vicinity of Lubavitch World Headquarters – 770 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights.
Signs in several languages were hung around the central synagogue on Tuesday warning the public and potential vendors that no such activity will be allowed during the busy season of the new Jewish year.
Community Affairs Officer Vinny Martinos of the 71st Precinct said that the decision was made because of the centrality of the 770 building that is a hub for prayers and study for thousands of people.
“Our first concern is security and we can’t take any chances of people stationing themselves in the vicinity without being clear about their intentions,” Martinos told COLlive.com.
He said that vendors -even Jewish ones selling Judaica- will not be allowed to set up shop on Eastern Parkway itself or on Kingston Avenue until Union Street which wraps around the 770-778 buildings.
Asked who has requested that such a measure be taken, Martinos said: “Literally everyone – residents, activists, rabbis.” He said all merchandise will be confiscated and a summons may be issued to anyone failing to comply.
He also warned that any luggage or other bags that are level unattended near 770 will be cleared immediately by NYPD officers which will be on high alert throughout the upcoming month.
The ban begins on September 25 and continues until October 25, 2019.

Thank G-d. The chilul Hashem of the market!!! In front of a shul! The Rebbe’s shul! I always said it was a charpe and a shande ! We needed a goy to enforce it? How terrible! You’ll see less people will come as they come to NY for the sole purpose of making money at the market place!! BH BH this hefkeres will stop!!!!!!
Why wasn’t this issued years ago, why all of a sudden did you guys wake up?
770 should not be a shuk, and I hope they enforce it!

YASHER KOYACH!! Why wasn’t this thought of years ago?
But security is the priority obviously.
the vendors provide a service so just move them to an area on the eastern parkway island
They are taking away business from legitimate business wich have a licensed and pay rent and taxes!!
Some of the vendors do provide a service so they should move to the island in front of 770
If its a security issue why is it just tishrei? What about the suitcases of the porch of womens section
This is parnassah for so many people even people from our community! How are vendors allowed by Labor Day or every day by the utica train station !!!!!! Is that not a security issue ?
Venders on utica are mainly on the island and not blocking 770
I think of all the luggage sitting around not knowing who’s coming and going as more of a security risk
This is a right move! CH’s store-owners pay rent and taxes (and other expenses) to maintain their stores, to be able to provide us all with the best products and service available. With more than one store in our neighbourhood (and in NYC) selling the same products, prices can be competitive. However, street vendors do not pay any rent nor taxes (nor any of the other related expenses) and that is how they are able to undercut and outprice the store vendors. With them, there are no returns or customer service! When you purchase from a street vendor (or any… Read more »
It’s about time, maybe now we can then walk the sidewalk during Tishrei
A Seder in Lubavitch
It will be more pleasant to have an organized Jewish Market Fair before Sukkos, with food vendors as well. Like all other events on Kingston or Manhattan. Local shops will benefit too
Ps. Yes much nicer to have holy place holy and clean around
What about all before YT non Jewish beggars that pretend to be Jewish?
Thank you NYPD! Glad you are stepping in for the safety of the chassidim!
