Why only ask camp directors? I think it needs to be asked of every principal, rosh yeshiva, high school and seminary director.

does this apply to girls camps?

I’m sending my daughter for the first time. Are all these things concerns in girls camps too? Or just by the boys? Now I’m getting all anxious.

great idea! any idea who those professionals are?

i heard
May 6, 2012 3:46 pm

that this year parksville is having a series of staff meetings before camp with professionals coming to speak to the staff about everything.
i heard as well that (as is evident from the article) they are really changing the activities so that it isn’t only sports and leagues, but other interactive activities as well

I’m not 11, and I did come out okay eventually, but I didn’t enjoy it while it lasted. And when my child went to camp last summer and experienced the same thing I did when I was a kid – that makes me agree that everything that #11 said makes a lot of sense and I wish I would have done it last year this time. I’m notsending to camp this summer, and I sure will ask questions before I send again!!

I did not say dont do your research, I did say however not to drive people crazy… Do you think camps don’t know the situation and try to do their research a much as possible? Do you think without you driving them crazy they will hire irresponsible people? Do you think they hire reckless drivers? You know just as well as everyone else what the smoking, beer and other policies are for staff… But to drive them crazy for documents and go crazy as if you are the only one who cars for your child is going overboard… so you… Read more »

and what better way to get comfortable that ask the questions of the director?

#11 is someone who doesnt want their kid molested, abused, neglected or killed.

I think that’s ok, don’t you?

Who is this paranoid #11

Cool your horses, stop making things so complicated for yourself, the camp, the staff, the director, and most important for the campers, you obviously need to be comfortable with where you send your child but it is the attitude that you take which makes these camps run like the most impersonal experience for all, and disrupts the way the campus build a fun exciting curriculum for all… Live and let live… Yes, do your research but stop being a pest! I’m sure when you went to camp your parents did not make the campus life miserable but did take precaution… Read more »

Be a responsible parent
May 6, 2012 12:40 am

Call your childs camp director and ask him or her some crucial questions before you send your kid off to the unknown. #1: What is the camps “same gender” yichud policy? #2: How is discipline handled? Will my child be subject to verbal and emotional abuse by the counselor or head staff? #3: Does the camp run a clearance check for each staff member? #4: What is the camp Mashke (beer) policy? Will my child have a replacement counselor on the occasions that his counselor is farbrenging (or having his erev shabbos bein hashmoshos fix)? #5: Is there a designated… Read more »

Amazing camp
May 5, 2012 11:15 pm

my son had an amazing chasidishe experience last year.
one suggestion – not all boys love sports – perhaps you can include hands on activities – wood work, string art, art classes, ceramics – you would be surprised how lots of the boys would enjoy it.

Great...AND

What are they doing ahead of camp to prepare the staff to care for our children properly?
