By a Resident of Remsen Village
This past Friday night in Remsen Village, my family lived through what could have been a tragedy.
Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop.
“It sounds like fireworks,” I began to say—
And then a bullet tore through our front window, just two feet from my husband’s head.
Plastic shards exploded into the room. One hit my husband on the back of the head. He reached up, checking for blood. My nephews and children hit the floor instinctively. My husband rushed them to the basement, away from the windows. I grabbed our toddler and ran to the back of the house, where three more kids were asleep.
This is not the opening to a gripping crime novel.
This is my family’s reality.
We spoke to the many police officers who responded to the scene. They were compassionate, but their message was chilling:
“Even if we find who did this, they’ll walk. We’re powerless to do anything. The system protects the criminals.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this. Over the years, our NYPD Community Affairs Liaison has told us the same thing: that arrests are meaningless because the criminals are back on the street in hours. Drunk men exposing themselves. Packages stolen. Homes broken into. Each time, the result is the same—no accountability, no justice, no safety.
And in case you’re tempted to blame the neighborhood—let me be clear:
I lived in Crown Heights for a decade. We had a shooting in our building. A man was killed on our corner. A major drug bust happened up the block. We lived one block from Bais Rivkah.
What happened to my family is not a one-off incident—it’s part of a broader breakdown in public safety across our city. And with an election just weeks away, we have a civic responsibility to speak out.
Our current leadership has failed us.
When Crown Heights United endorses Andrew Cuomo, they’re endorsing the man who brought us cashless bail, and with it, a tidal wave of crime and chaos. Under Cuomo:
Our streets became less safe
Our schools faced investigations
The MTA was mismanaged and declared unsafe
Nursing homes became the epicenter of a deadly scandal
He blamed our community for spreading COVID, while marching with Black Lives Matter
Cuomo is not our ally. He is a career politician who has never had our back—and never will.
Then there’s Zohran Mamdani—an openly anti-Semitic, self-proclaimed socialist. His hatred of Israel is well-documented. He’s young, inexperienced, and dangerously ideological. He’s made his position on public safety crystal clear: he’s firmly in the Defund the Police camp.
These are the two options that our “community leaders” are choosing between?
Cuomo is as dangerous as Mamdani—the only difference is that he knows how to smile, shake hands, and lie his way into Jewish endorsements. But the results of his leadership speak for themselves.
We need a radical change.
That’s why I will be voting for Curtis Sliwa this November.
Curtis Sliwa is not perfect—but he is consistent. He shows up. He listens. He has always prioritized safety. He walks our streets in his signature red beret because he believes in leading from the front—not hiding behind political consultants.
Sliwa understands that a society without law and order cannot thrive. He’s promised to put safety first—and that’s exactly what our community needs.
To the leaders of Crown Heights United and the Community Council:
When will you prioritize our safety over your politics?
How many of the candidates you’ve endorsed supported cashless bail?
How many stand behind Mamdani and his extremist views?
If you truly represent this community, then you should be willing to publicly retract your endorsements when those candidates betray our interests. Mamdani’s rise is a direct result of our continued support for the “lesser of all evils.”
Enough is enough.
If you want real change—vote for Curtis Sliwa.
Encourage every Jew in NYC to do the same.
Let’s send a clear, unified message to City Hall and Albany:
We will not be taken for granted. We take our safety seriously. And we expect our leaders to do the same.

Response from Crown Heights United:
First of all, we are sorry for what you experienced Friday night. No one should have to go through that. That said, you are mistaken about how bail reform became law and who is responsible for its consequences. Klal Yisroel understands the danger, which is why every single Orthodox Jewish community endorsed Cuomo in the primary. So if you take issue with any endorsement of Cuomo, you are essentially disagreeing with the entire frum community in Brooklyn. In the end, we expect that most will also endorse him in the general. In fact, following the Crown Heights endorsement, Far Rockaway, Queens, and Staten Island also endorsed.
The reason some communities are still waiting is because they think Mamdani is likely to win. They all know Curtis cannot. Curtis has absolutely no path to victory. Our position has been that we must stand on principle from the beginning and make it clear to Mamdani that his rhetoric, which endangers our community, is unacceptable and crosses every red line. For us, this is not about betting on the winner. It is about standing proud and strong as Jews and doing everything possible to ensure that Mamdani is not elected mayor.
You are entitled to disagree, endorse, and vote for whomever you choose. That is your right. But I don’t understand how you can justify posting an attack anonymously on a public website. That is nothing more than a pashkvile. If you want to criticize responsibly and credibly, you should attach your name. Without doing so, your words carry no weight—because if you truly believed in them, you would stand behind them openly.

Are we going to ignore the fact that 5 different of our very own Crown Heights community leaders both male and female Askonim have real connections with Adams and pull with the Adams administration. Why aren’t the 5 CH Leaders, and the about 25 CH Activists & machers that are associated with those different leaders using every and any connection and brownie points that they have to get Adams to shut down some of the many CH city funded Homeless shelter projects, bike lanes (to stop the bike lanes & rip up the proposal not “pause” it so Mamdani can… Read more »
Those 5 may be the classic description of political opportunists, so they are afraid to commit to anything… It’s more about them than anything else…
either you get it, or you don’t. And if I have to explain it to you, well, that’s on you.
The best option is to vote smartly not idealistically.
Because if you vote for sliwa, he won’t win, and you will have wasted your vote!
The advantage of a career politician is that ilthey have no agenda other than winning. If they think it will win them a vote, they might be inclined to do your community a favorit so they can keep winning.
That story of the gun shots never happened. Andrew Cuomo is the best out of all the candidates.
The gun shots did happen the story is 100% true.
you are sick!
What guarantees can Crown Heights United give to our community that if by nes min hashomayim Cuomo wins then Cuomo will actually be there for CH. B/c history has shown us that (not part like now) but after the entire CH political establishment endorsed Adams & helped pave the way for all other Jewish communities to support him, as soon as Adams got elected Mayor he deliberately started funding Homeless shelters in CH, placed citibikes, 5G loitering kiosks, proposed a MTA City Bus route in Albany which will endanger every ULY student and ‘protected bike lanes’ on Kingston/Brooklyn Aves Voters… Read more »
Really curious to know why theres always missing puzzle pieces to these kind of argument. Does Eric adams and Kathy hochul ,the governor and mayor of recent years, have they nothing to do with the crime, have they no power, aren’t they the governor and mayor for enough years that the responsibility of such happenings fall on them?
we didn’t go out and vote against no bail and revolving door on arrests proposal on ballot and then cuomo and hochul as governors passed and maintained it. We didn’t go out and vote (and enough weren’t registered) to try to vote in city council members (including frum ones) who would approve of rules Mayor Adams and Jessica Tisch wanted… and taking away bicycle lanes and all sorts of things. We do have to show up now not only about the mayor, but about proposals on ballot and all the minor seeming offices. If there is no one opposing working… Read more »
Period. The question is who’s fault is it really. It comes to a point where you have to blame the mayor and governor of these past years regardless of who started it ,which like you said is coumo. It does seem that sliwa is the best candidate but does he have a chance even?
If we all vote for sliwa he may have a chance but if we don’t because we already decided he can’t win then yeah it will be a self fulfilling prophecy. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. Either way whatever happens is in Hashem s hands. We just need to make a keli, use our best judgement at the time and leave the rest to Hashem. We can’t control the outcome especially with all the election corruption and fraud going on. Hashem is in charge and will sort things out one way or another Just do yourself a favor… Read more »
You might as,well vote for mamdani as a vote for sliwa is to vote for mamdani
I encourage you to go pick up your check from mamdani’s office, as your working overtime for him.
I will voting for Andrew like leadership has asked
If you want mamdani vote sliwa
This article must be publicized! Crown Heights United used the words “PROUDLY endorse” regarding Cuomo. Have we gone totally nuts? Stop taking the bait by these stupid selfish politicians every time. No one cares about us. Let’s chose the safest candidate. Not the one that will show up to someoenes Sukka more times. Let’s get our real priorities straight. Gmar Chasima Tova!
The only people that will be safe under mandami are criminals.
So sorry to hear what happened to your family on Friday night.
Unfortunately your vote is a waste though because there’s not a chance of sliwa winning..
Truest comment here. However sad
Had they not said the same thing about Giuliani?
I’m sure every single member of the Crown Heights Community Council favors Curtis Sliwa. But there is unfortunately no way he has any chance of a victory. Therefore, the smarter choice is to align with the lesser of the evils. Voting for Sliwa is unfortunately going to be a vote for Mamdani.
Please think bigger picture!
Really?
What evidence is there that Sliwa can’t win?
With Adams running I understand. Because our neighbors like to vote in their own.
But no one likes Cuomo enough that just maybe they’ll cast their vote for sliwa instead
Polling numbers place Sliwa significantly below frontrunners
• In multiple recent polls, Zohran Mamdani is in a strong lead, while Sliwa is trailing with around 10-15% support.
• For example, a Guardian poll showed Mamdani with ~43%, Cuomo ~28%, Sliwa only ~10%.
• Even after Eric Adams dropped out, Sliwa’s numbers didn’t meaningfully close the gap.
Therefore, voting for Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani!
Who are they polling?
I was never polled.
How about you?
Or anyone else you know?
that’s how accurate the polls are.
But they sure convince you to not vote for the best candidate like Silwa.
So many were planning on voting for Adams and weren’t asked. We don’t know who’s planning on voting for Sliwa or not. I wish we had banded together with the non Jewish residents of crown heights and shown our support of Adams for general election (so many except far left didn’t show up for primary) even though not asked in polls.
You are correct about Cuomo but you missed an important factor. This is more Adams fault because “our good friend” Eric Adams refuses to replace soft on crime judges which let the criminals walk free (that has nothing to do with Cuomos bail reform) Also Adams/NYC turned 599 Utica Hotel into a Homeless Shelter near your home. Also Adams’s NYC is partially funding the newly built Homeless shelter brand new building at Utica/Rutand (568 Utica – 832 Rutland) so expect crime to skyrocket near your home once Adams opens this Homeless shelter. There’s still a few months left for Adams… Read more »
All those homeless shelters u are complaining about are state funded and were approved by cuomo
Community activists know facts. Fact #1 there are about 10 recent CH Homeless Shelters some opened already, some are in the process of opening. Some (not all) of them are 100% funded by NYC (Adams) including the notorious Homeless shelter at 560 Winthrop St which both Shmira and Shomrim are well aware of the crime originating from this NYC shelter. As well as the soon to open in the next few months crime Homeless shelter at 329 Clarkson Ave which will all but destroy the Lubavitch community in South/West CH. You are probably referring to the Mega homeless shelter at… Read more »
599 Utica Ave is a former hotel that is being leased by NYC (Adams) run as city homeless shelter. This is a fact.
Search the address, look up some details, ask any activists in CH will tell you the same. Eric Adams administration has turned this hotel into a violent crime filled drug infested homeless shelter. Adams can shut it down overnight if our community activists have the guts to demand it…

Now is not the time to be idealistic
You’re right that Moshiach is the forefront of our desires, but we still have the plan for the future to some degree. I might be wrong about this since I don’t have a source, but I heard once that the Rebbe emphasized on this point to plan ahead; I personally heard it in the context of signing up to camp instead of waiting for the last minute in case Moshiach doesn’t arrive by the time summer comes around.
In short, it’s time to be realistic if it means there’s a chance our next mayor is a raging antisemite.
Don’t be a fool, if people vote for Sliwa, it will ensure a Mamdani win. And if you thought it was bad under Cuomo, you don’t even want to imagine what it will be like for a religious Jew to G-d forbid have a mayor who is pro-Hamas and hates Jews. You don’t want to be the person who causes this. So stop disillusioning yourself, Sliwa has no chance to win and you will be partly to blame if G-d forbid Mamdani wins. If you’re concerned about cashless bail, you need to vote for Elise Stefanik for Governor next year.… Read more »
NO ONE HAS A SHOT VS MADMANI, SO VOTE FOR SLIWA
A vote for Sliwa is in fact a vote for Mamnazi. So, use some seichel.
Abolish the 19th amendment!
Don’t waste your vote on someone who won’t win. Not to speak about how antistatic he is the famous video of him saying “all Jews do is study Torah and have babies” “the reason no one says that is because of the checks that don’t bounce” or yesterday a woman came up to him and said “We got a problem in Brooklyn. the Jews are robbing people of their homes,” and Sliwa answered “Deed theft,” Sliwa is also anti Trump his not a real republican there’s a reason Trump is not endorsing him #votecuomo because he’s are only chance against… Read more »
Sliwa put his life on the line to protect our lives and our community when no one else would.
He is a decent human being and cares enough to help us survive in our own neighborhood.
Actions speak louder than words.
The media made trump look like a monster when the opposite is true. They edit, omit and piece together sentences to invent a narrative.
Good! Yet another reason for me to support Sliwa.
At least someone sees through that lying scheming sleaze bag

No one said that Cuomo is good he’s the lesser of three evils did you see what Sliwa said about Jews just yesterday!
And even if Silwa is better than cuomo there’s no way he’s winning so why waste your vote. Our best hope is that Cuomo, s bad as he is, wins.
Video from 2018 surfaced this week of Curtis Sliwa, the Republican mayoral candidate in New York City, describing Orthodox Jews as a drag on the US tax system.
“We’re not talking about poor, impoverished, disabled people who need help. We’re talking about able-bodied men who study Torah and Talmud all day and we subsidize them,” Sliwa says in the video. “And then all they do is make babies like there’s no tomorrow and who’s subsidizing that? We are he no better then Como
The ‘Real’ Curtis Sliwa has been coming out more and more lately, and he’s not particularly a Jew lover in the least. Perhaps he’s trying to make an appeal to the broader anti- Israel public, and of course ,he’s not as bad as Mandami, but he’s consciously contributing for a win to Mamdani by staying in the race, for which he has not the slightest hope of winning, but only in actually assisting the ultimate wicked candidate to win. And, trust me, that couldn’t bother him in the least!
I WOULD PREFER TO VOTE FOR CURTIS SLIWA, BUT EVERYONE SAYS HE HAS NO CHANCE OF WINNING. THAT MEANS THAT MAHMDANI WILL WIN THE VOTES. SO IN THAT CASE, I’D RATHER VOTE FOR COUMO, INSTEAD OF BRINGING IN MAHMDANI. I’M SURE ALOT OF CONSIDERATION WENT INTO THIS BECAUSE ALL THE JEWISH COMMUNITIES CAME TO THE SAME CONCLUSION. (IT HAS THE MOST CHANCE OF MAKING SURE THAT MAHMDANI DOES NOT GET IN. WE MUST ALL UNITE BEHIND ONE CANDIDATE EVEN THOUGH HE ISN’T THE IDEAL ONE).
Backing Sliwa is a useless vote. He’s got a chance like a snowball in hell. It’s not that he’s a Republican. It’s because he’s just not a polished candidate to run in NYC. remember this is NYC not some town or city in Alabama.
THE LESSER OF 2 EVILS OR HAMAN WILL REIGN
Agree 100 percent but he has no chance of winning so no point
1. If you’re so passionate about this issue, why did you use chatGPT to write the article?
2. Do you blame the Second Amendment for gun deaths, or just the shooter? Because by the logic you’re using to blame Cuomo, you should.
3. Do you recognize that Sliwa has a 0% chance of winning? That a vote for Sliwa is effectively a vote for Mamdani? Pro Mamdani people are salivating over posts like this.
1. Why do you need to be rude?
I’m sorry to hear what occurred to the sanctuary of your home. Nobody should ever experience such crime and fear in the place we feel most safe and call home. However, I question your decision of blaming Cuomo for this when you uttered the following statement: “Our current leadership has failed us”. Surely you are aware that our current mayor is Adams; this reminds me of when Trump consistently exclaims that October 7 wouldn’t have occurred under his presidency and blames Biden for it… :-/ I won’t pretend to say that Cuomo is perfect, but of the two evils, he’s… Read more »
Who is this mysterious “Commenter” that keeps cropping up in Collive articles? His or her comments seem to be on point with reality and accuracy.
It’s not true. The police are demoralizing you. I hope you filed a police report. Every report turns into a statistic which affects laws that are written..
They can put a guy behind bars for even non violent felonies. But for sure for violent ones.
Here in East Flatbush we had a package thief. One stolen package isn’t enough but everyone got together with their security cameras to add up the charges and they were able to upgrade the charges to felony and the guy stayed behind bars.
The problem is also long as Sliwa is an option the ppl NY who hate Coumo will vote Sliwa the miracle would be if Sliwa drops out not if Cuomo wins. Also I think the religious Jews in NY especially CH always wake up late when it comes to finding a good candidate everyone can agree on. I think the time is now for ppl to wake up and endorse Stefanic for governor even the so called “leaders of CH”
If it is truly about “standing behind our position” etc, you should certainly be endorsing Sliwa, no?
Also, do you really care that her name does not appear?.. answer the claim shared by many!
a vote for moshiac and world peace
The CH United Response was okay, but I don’t see a path to victory for Cuomo. At the way his campaign is going Cuomo will 100% lose and Mamdani will 100% win. The writer (and 15% of NYC) from this article probably feels since Cuomo will lose anyways, Mamdani will win anyways, then she might as well support the “Law & Order candidate” Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo needed some real “Yiddishe Seichel” in his campaign during the primary, hopefully Cuomo’s team realizes that money is not what is campaign needs but it needs some “Lubavitch Seichel” to think big, wild, out… Read more »
Uh people will never forgive or forget how Cuomo behaved during covid.
No way to undo that no matter how brilliant his campaign is.

Everyone knows you’re right about Cuomo but is it smart?
So if you take issue with any endorsement of Cuomo, you are essentially disagreeing with the entire frum community in Brooklyn. I KNOW MANY VERY GOOD FRUM YIDDEN DISAGREEING WITH THIS CUOMO CRIMINAL . THE FRUM COMMUNITY SHOULD HAVE ALL AGREED TO VOTE FOR SLIWA. WHEN ARE REAL PEOPLE ESPECIALLY JEWISH AND EVEN MORE SO ,FRUM YIDDEN REALIZE THAT THE DEM PARTY ARE A PARTY OF CRIMINALS AND TERRORIST. did you outreach Ritchie taylor ?
They are so blind to the issues of the community and would rather kush tuchis with the people they “proudly endorse” than actually do something
Please don’t be so stupid and vote for silwa a massive antisemite he hates Jews and has a 0% chance of winning. Cuomo isn’t good but neither is he evil and every single vote counts, make your worth it and vote for Cuomo
I’ll say it straight
There telling you pick your poison
They are both poison. One of them is less potent and that is Andrew Cuomo
Unfortunately we don’t have any other options.

This is Curtis Sliwa. This is the man you’re proud to vote for?
20 years ago, there was a dumocrat primary for Congress. There was a debate. Candidate 1 was a black who made a vaad member his treasurer. He said he supports the P.L.O. Candidate 2, Jewish Councilman from Williamsburg, who then said, “No. I support Hamas”. Candidate 3, a Black woman said, “I opposes talking with the terrorists” and went to the Ohel. Candidate 3, Yvette Clarke, won by an inch. And only 2 days ago really betrayed Israel by finally endorsing Mamzerani. In that election the Vaad switched to Yvette. Almost all the Yidden voted for the white Jew bshogeg,… Read more »
