When a new baby joins the family it’s a big stress on everyone but none so much as the mother who now spends her days and nights entirely occupied with caring for her new little one. It’s an overwhelming job. For a new mother there’s so much to learn about baby care and feeding. For a mother with other children, she has the tricky task of balancing the responsibility of the new baby as well as the older ones. It’s no small wonder that during this time mothers themselves often feel neglected. And yet this is a crucial time for the mother to get good nourishment, good rest and positive encouragement from those around her. Remember, good care for a mother will always equal good care for her children!
40 years ago the Rebbe knew that this was so important to Jewish families and mothers. The Shifra and Puah initiative first began in Kfar Chabad on Yom Kippur (!!!!) where the Rebbe made sure that the organizers would not distinguish between one family or another. There was to be no consideration of financial situation, family connections, or whether this was the first child or seventh! The program was not to discriminate between any women and make sure that all mothers were treated with equal care and support.
When Shifra and Puah was first initiated in Crown Heights, it was mainly to serve the women who were living without parents in the area that could support them. A weeks worth of breakfast’s were delivered directly to the new mother; beautifully presented and prepared with the highest standards of kashrus.
Now, in honor of the 40th anniversary of Shifra and Puah’s initiation, Junior Nshei is teaming up with Shifra and Puah to create a larger organization that can service all women in Crown Heights without distinction, as the Rebbe originally envisioned it. From now on, every mother in Crown Heights will be qualified to receive Shifra and Puah breakfasts, no matter what her situation is.
At this time, the newly expanded program is looking for volunteers to assist in the delivery of these meals. Both a driver and her companion will bring the meals to the family, with the companion hand delivering the beautifully packaged breakfast to the mother, while the driver waits.
We are very excited about this new initiative and we hope that the community will join us in supporting our growing population. New mothers deserve our help and support, and this is a great way to show it. By requesting meals on behalf of our friends or family, and by volunteering for this program, we send mothers a message of respect and admiration and we build a community of caring and achdus.

The article states that when the Rebbe initiated this organization in Kfar Chabad, it was specified that financial status is NOT the criteria. Being a new (or new again) mother IS.
Thank you for pointing out that this organization is funded by tzedaka monies. If someone feels that they could financially afford to call and order breakfast, but would love to feel pampered and/or are overwhelmed with the household needs at the time, they should by all means get a breakfast. They can always give a donation in return to the organization.
These breakfasts are delicious and the mother is made to feel like a queen and very much pampered! No words can really describe the affects this has on a mother!! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all those involved!!!
Wow so nice. Junior Neshei in Chicago also has been doing breakfasts for new mommies. So nice to see young people taking initiative! In Chicago the breakfasts are for a full week. Is this as well?
I enjoyed the breakfasts when I had my last baby. I am allergic to dairy so couldn’t eat parts of it but found it very thoughtful!
It’s beautiful that this is available to anyone that needs yet people have to realize that this is a tzedoka organization. Busy women who are volunteering to help others who need, therefore only those who are actually in need should accept this help. Unfortunately when there are services offered at times people don’t stop to think but take for granted that this is a communities service for everyone. Please only take if you are in need! This is a wonderful organization and hopefully they will be able to provide other needs too!
I recieved these delicious gourmet breakfasts. They gave me so much nourishment and energy. I will always be grateful! Thank you!
I admire Junior Nshei for contributing to Crown Heights’s status as a model for other Jewish (frum + non-yet frum) communities.
These meals We’re amazing when my baby was in the NIcu – I would check my door numerous times to see if it was already delivered and took it with me to the hospital – it was my breakfast and lunch and nursed me back to health! It’s 2 years later and I still can’t thank them enough!
What an amazing initiative! Delivering a filling nutritious Breakfast is such a brilliant way to take care of a new mom!! I’ve heard about this before and always wished i would be able to benefit from it but since I Baruch HaShem have family here in crown heights that wasn’t an option for me and I totally understood that. But i am so happy it’s being open to everyone now!
I miss living in crown heights now. Those few days after having a baby are so hard and so hard to find one to eat a decent meal. I had PPD and the serious lack of sleep and not eating right really took a toll on me
Yasher koach. My sisters have gotten and were very grateful. Beautifully done.
Thank you, hatzlacha!
I had previously tried to arrange breakfast for one of my children to receive, because I was working, taking care of other children/grandchildren, planning a wedding, and could not be there for them as much as I would have hoped. I was made to feel like a beggar, and inadequate because I was not providing this myself. In the end, we said never mind.
I hope ALL new moms can benefit now
The family usually gets dinners/Shabbos from family, friends, or other organizations. But a new mom can be so overwhelmed and busy to remember to eat. If a proper breakfast is delivered, she will make the time to eat something nutritious before dinner.
Thank you for this!
כל הכבוד to shlotmit slapotchnik and the other wonderful women My daughter living in NY with neither parents or in laws was a receipient of their kindness. How wonderful is was for her and reassuring for me.
Just to clarify, the breakfast is just for the mother-to give her energy. There are other organizations that give suppers for families.
סעודת יהודית was doing this for 17 years in crown Heights
THIS IS SO WONDERFUL
Thank you so much. The breakfast that my wife got were wonderful and it helped her soo much.
In Chicago they send 2 dinners (1 every other day) and shabbos meals for the entire family.
Although breakfasts may be helpful to some- many don’t usually eat large breakfasts and a full dinner is so much more helpful.
How many breakfasts are they planning on bringing to a mom?
Wish I knew about this when I had my babies. My parents and in laws don’t live here and I had no help…
