The Annual Sukkah Gathering of political leaders and law enforcement was held in Crown Heights during Chol Hamoed at the Sukkah of veteran activist Chanina and Orly Sperlin.
This year’s event was especially warm, both in terms of the mild weather, and as each of the speakers spoke warmly of their friendship with Crown Heights, the unique role of Crown Heights in bringing the community closer together.
Public Advocate Letitia James, who was recently elected Democratic Candidate for New York State Attorney General with support from the Crown Heights Jewish community, was all smiles.
Among the speakers were NY State Comptroller Tom Dinapoli; NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer; Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams; outgoing State Senator Jesse Hamilton.
CHJCC Chairman Zaki Tamir introduced Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez and he was joined by Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office Marco Carrion, accompanied by Brooklyn Director Jamila Pringle-Fynes and Community Liaison Pinny Ringel.
Israel’s Consul General of Israel in New York Danny Dayan shared a few words. He was there with Israel Nitzan, his new Deputy Consul General who has previously served as Director of Israel’ Foreign Ministry’s United Nations Political Affairs Department.
Sperlin, who serves as the governmental liaison for the CHJCC, welcomed NYPD Chief of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South, Chief Brian Conroy; and Commanding Officer of 71st Precinct, Deputy Inspector Frank Giordano.
CHJCC Executive Director Rabbi Eli Cohen introduced the speakers and explained the holiday of Sukkot to the guests.
Congresswoman Yvette Clarke had to be in Washington for an important vote, but she was represented at the Sukkah gathering by Eli Slavin.
Representatives of the Jewish Communities of Borough Park, Flatbush and Williamsburgh were also present at the event, as were prominent residents of Crown Heights.
State Assembly Members Diana Richardson and Walter Mosley and Council Member Laurie Cumbo were unable to attend, but were represented by members of their staff.
Republican Candidate Lutchi Gayot also introduced himself to the gathering.
