The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine isn’t associated with an increased risk of autism, even among kids who are at high risk because they have a sibling with the disorder, a Danish study suggests.
Concerns about a potential link between the MMR vaccine and autism have persisted for two decades, since a controversial and ultimately retracted 1998 paper claimed there was a direct connection.
Even though subsequent studies haven’t tied inoculation to autism, fear about the risk has weighed on parents so much in several communities across Europe and the U.S. that vaccination rates have been too low to prevent a spate of measles outbreaks.
In the current study, researchers examined data on 657,461 children. During this time, 6,517 kids were diagnosed with autism.
Kids who got the MMR vaccine were seven percent less likely to develop autism than children who didn’t get vaccinated, researchers report in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
“Parents should not skip the vaccine out of fear for autism,” said lead study author Dr. Anders Hviid of the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen, Denmark.
“The dangers of not vaccinating includes a resurgence in measles which we are seeing signs of today in the form of outbreaks,” Hviid said by email.
Measles is a highly contagious virus that can be fatal. It starts with a fever that can last a couple of days, followed by a cough, runny nose and pink eye. A rash develops on the face and neck and then spreads to the rest of the body. In severe cases, pneumonia and encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, can develop.
People with measles can spread the virus for several days before and after the rash appears.
The virus can live for up to two hours on surfaces where an infected person coughs or sneezes. People can become infected by breathing in droplets or touching a contaminated surface and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
Just a five percent reduction in vaccination coverage can triple measles cases in the community, researchers note.
Researchers studied the connection between the MMR vaccine and autism in a nationwide cohort of all children born in Denmark to Danish-born mothers from 1999 to 2010. They followed kids from age one through the end of August 2013.
Overall, 95 percent of the kids in the study got the vaccine.
Children with autistic siblings were more than seven times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than kids without this family history, the study found.
Boys were four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls, the study found.
And, children who had no childhood vaccinations were 17 percent more likely to be diagnosed with autism than kids who did get recommended vaccinations.
Early symptoms of autism can vary but may include repetitive behaviors like hand flapping or body rocking, extreme resistance to changes in routine, and sometimes aggression or self-injury. Behavioral, educational, speech and language therapy may help reduce the severity of autism symptoms in some children.
The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how vaccines might cause autism.
Another drawback is the potential for some kids to have undiagnosed autism before getting the MMR vaccine, which could make the MMR vaccine appear linked to autism when it really isn’t connected, the study authors note. It’s also possible that the onset of autism symptoms might lead parents to skip the vaccine.
Still, the study adds to a large body of evidence showing that vaccines don’t cause autism, writes Dr. Saad Omer of Emory University in Atlanta, co-author of an accompanying editorial.
“Any myth should be clearly labeled as such,” Omer writes. “Even in the face of substantial and increasing evidence against an MMR-autism association, the discussion around the potential link has contributed to vaccine hesitancy.”
Don’t be so quick to say such things. Lawsuits were won in favor of people who sued for vaccine damage.
So u actually think by calling anti-vaxxers names they will b intimidated into giving their kids poison? Sorry but they care about their kids more than you do. No study on Earth will convince thousands of parents who have unfortunately seen their child forever damaged from vaccinations agree to endanger them again. Sorry but the scare of contracting a disease is nowhere near the scare of intentionally injecting their child with ingredients that they have seen have been harmful. And forcing them to is actually extremely heartless and cruel. So as cruel as u think the anti vacxers can be-… Read more »
Everytime collive runs an article about vaccines (defending them. Duh.) the comment section is awful. How clinically stupid must one be to be opposed to vaccines? (Very clinically dumb. Very.) However, I always thought it ended with that, we’re just stupid. But now, with comment #2 I also see that you anti vaccers are also really crazy. You must be sincerely cruel to deny yourself and your children vaccines to assuage a risk which you agree is extremely low but thereby endangers a class of people (there are many more than you think that have immune deficiencies.) which there are… Read more »
the ‘studies’ are one-sided and biased at best.
one need only look at who funds ‘the studiies.’
1) Who funded this “study”? The drug companies that make the vaccines? 2) What is your answer to the fact that the US government recognizes “vaccine injury” and funds compensation for same?? 3) What is your answer to the fact that the doctor(s) who exposed the facts that US vaccines contain 25 times the amount of aluminum known to cause damage to infant brains had his licence revoked? 4) What is your answer to the fact that a perfectly normal 2- year-old – within hours of receiving the “routine vaccine” -became worse than autistic, forever altering the lives not only… Read more »
Ok…and why on Earth should we believe you??
When many actually have seen vaccine injury, contrary to your narrow minded world.
Unfortunately…
This study doesn’t prove anything…cuz there’s no proof that vaccines do not cause autism.
Many ppl don’t need a study to prove it,. Unfortunately , experiencing the dangers first hand is more proof than any pharmaceutical company can try to prove otherwise.
Hashem yishmor.
Most drugs have effects, positive effects and negative effects. In the case of vaccines the desired positive effect is; Immunity from the named disease. The negative effects can be one or a combination of:
1. fever
2. encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)
3. seizures
4.immune system defiiciencies
5.gastrointestinal problems…
6.Death
Autism is a behavioral diagnosis. Vaccines cause the underlying physical conditions to produce the behavioral symptoms that result in the “autism” diagnosis.
I can confirm another child who regressed into autistism after the MMR (and they were not babies, they’re were about 6)
I know this first hand from their parents.
I don’t know the science, but I know on the ground what happened.
How idiotic! Have you checked out this person’s story? Jumping to conclusions, eh? You have it all wrong. Same vaccine injury in my family. I wish your family complete health – how dare you assume without checking it the facts thoroughly.
Children should be vaccinated by force if the parents won’t do it. Same as if a parent doesn’t feed their child.
Right on! Thank you!
“Unfortunately, we have someone in our chabad community who became autistic from the mmr vaccine. The doctor and childrens hospital confirmed it was from the vaccine.” This is a lie. Whoever wrote comment #15, I am calling you a wicked liar. You made this up out of whole cloth, because you are a horrible person who delights in scaring people. No practicing doctor and certainly no children’s hospital in history has ever confirmed that even one person became autistic from the MMR vaccine. Nobody could possibly confirm such a thing, even if the vaccine COULD cause autism (which it can’t).… Read more »
Who sponsored/paid for the study~the pharmaceutical companies? The proof is in the pudding, as the expression goes. Parents who know, cause and effect, see what happens right after inoculation of an otherwise healthy kid. So what if it shows on paper in a report! Situational evidence is there and glaringly obvious.
I usually don’t like to voice my views on Collive, but I am very big on CHOICE. Everyone should have the free choice to do what they feel is best. if you would rather space out vaccinations so that you are giving immune system a break between shots, if you are immune compromised, or if you are simply just a nervous parent and would like to take one step at time. THAT SHOULD BE YOUR RIGHT. If you wish to vaccinate your kids with one shot that contains all 6 in one, YOU SHOULD. you should feel 100% confident that… Read more »
Besides the fact that this study was extremely poorly designed, has conflict of interest, the study only studied 1 vaccine, among the literal dozen of vaccines given to kids. It’s simply incorrect to state “vaccines don’t cause autism” as that’s not even what the study was supposed to have shown. The children received every other vaccine. In fact, the most dangerous vaccine ingredient linked to neurological damage in vaccines (aluminum) isn’t even in the MMR. That’s not the say there’s no plausible damage from the MMR, but it is the equivalent of testing 1 kid in the class and saying… Read more »
Unfortunately, we have someone in our chabad community who became autistic from the mmr vaccine. The doctor and childrens hospital confirmed it was from the vaccine. It was so drastic and immediately after the mmr. To sue the government, as they can’t sue the pharmaceutical companies, they will lose if they say that the vaccine cause autism. The government has decided that vaccines don’t cause autism. So what are all these people who became autistic from vaccines do? They they use other language like neurological damage instead of the word autism. They are winning the lawsuits. We now have kids… Read more »
Are you saying that Science cannot find a cause for all the autism that’s prevalent today. if a child receives a shot and becomes autistic there is absolutely no link ever? Where are all these diseases coming from, autism, seizures, fevers, allergies, eczema…Where are they coming from? G-d? Science doesn’t believe in G-d. If you do then you have to ask yourself why?
All the vaccines prove just 1 thing. That vaccinated people get those illnesses drastically less often, since the vaccines are a deterrent…
However ironically, none the less, vaccinated people do not live One Day More… So why vacinate??? That’s a fact, not my opinion

Why are you so sure this is a “credible” study? If you actually read it, you would see it’s designed poorly, and data was manipulated…not even mentioning the authors conflicts of interest.
This study is not only not designed perfectly yet, but it is quite fishy, and the authors have many conflicts of interest. Would love to have seen this done more transparently and designed better. Studies on this topic are very needed, it’s unfortunate that it was botched. ) The smoking gun is the study-wide autism rate of 0.9-1%. The rate of ASD in Denmark is 1.65%. Where are the missing cases of ASD? Given past allegations of this group’s malfeasance and fraud, the rest of the study cannot be accepted based on this disparity alone: the study group is not representative… Read more »
Refuah Shleimah Krovah. Like you wrote, everyone must “learn and think for yourself”. However, it isn’t just Crown Heights. We live in Florida and my younger children have what’s called a “religious exemption.” It’s very easy to get, and quite a few kids in school have it instead of taking the huge load of vaccines that are mandated today (vs. when I was young and even when my older children were in school). If your doctor is truly concerned that you not be near non-vaccinated people, almost anywhere you may go can be dangerous for you in that respect. I… Read more »
Danish infants do not receive the hepatitis B vaccine. They do not receive the rotavirus vaccine. They do not receive the varicella (chickenpox) vaccine. They do not receive the flu shot. During the time when the data was collected for this study, Danish children did not receive the pneumococcal vaccine (it’s since been added to their schedule). When you compare the Danish Childhood Vaccination Schedule with the United States CDC Vaccination Schedule, Danish children receive less than 1/2 the number of vaccines compared to American Children during their first year of life, and before they ever get their first MMR… Read more »

Please explain, what is the point of these vaccine posts? I really dont understand it. Who ever said the only fear of vaccinating is Autism? Thats what ive been hearing from pro-vaxxers all over, including at my Shabbos table. But is that the real reason people arent vaccinating? NO! Get your facts straight and then maybe you too will re-consider if its worth the risk.

Your sincere well wishes are so much appreciated. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
As a nurse for over 40 years, I find it difficult to be in the position of receiving care rather than giving it.
I have a firm belief that eventually I will finally be able to go to the Rebbe. Again, thank you so much.
Refua Shelaima!!!!!!!
A truly very quick speedy recovery . I read your message with deep felt wishes that all your pain and suffering quickly disappear and turn into true joy with perfect good health and the ability to once again visit the Rebbe free of worry with only good news to share !!
We need Moshiach now !!! The end of all pain and suffering and good health for everyone everywhere.
Chassdim are a family we wish you all the best in every way!!!!!
I have the disease that no one likes to call by name and have been doing very well. However when I told my oncologist that we were planning to go to CH for a visit and so I can finally go to the Rebbe, he flatly forbade it. (And yes, he is Chabad, so he understands) For a healthy person, measles may be something recovered from without residual effect. However, there are many conditions other than mine that can have a severe, even deadly, consequence if the person contacts measles. With a greatly reduced immune system, I cannot take the… Read more »
Thank you to Collive for publishing this. There’s an enormous amount of data confirming that vaccines are safe, and there’s no credible data stating otherwise. The small but vocal group of people who claim otherwise, get their information from random Youtube and Facebook posts (which they think is ‘research’). Those posts are by fear peddlers who don’t understand science, or in some instances are on the extreme fringes of the medical communities, and are rejected by the mainstream. But their claims have been debunked time and again. The next time someone claims that vaccines are unsafe, ask them to cite… Read more »
