Mrs. Rivka Karp, matriarch of a large Lubavitch family, passed away on Motzei Shabbos, Yud Alef Nissan, 5780.
She was 90.
Mrs. Karp, known to her friends as Riva, was born in Varonish, Russia, to her parents, R’ Zev Avrohom and Shaina Chaya Slavin. Her brothers were very active in running the underground Chadorim in Communist Russia, with great self-sacrifice.
After the war, the family escaped to Paris. Her father and brothers merited to be at the gathering of the Rebbe with his mother in Paris, and are seen in the famous photo.
In Paris, she married R’ Avrohom Karp, who arrived there from Poland.
Eventually, they emigrated to Montreal, where they raised a beautiful family of Mechanchim and educators.
Mrs. Karp steadfastly supported her husband, a Mechanech for many years. Her husband was famous for his Daf Yomi Shiur, known as Kol Avrohom’s Shas, which he recorded in Yiddish in 1975, with the advent of the first tape recorders. Today, hundreds of thousands around the world still learn from his recordings, via a website and app.
Mrs. Karp was known for her Tznius and aidelkeit, and for having an open home to many visitors, always making visitors feel welcome and special.
In the mid-90’s Mrs. Karp and her husband moved to Crown Heights. She was predeceased by her husband.
Shes survived by her children, Mrs. Rochel Lustig – Crown Heights, Mrs. Esti Loebenstein – Melbourne, Australia, Rabbi Yanky Karp – Crown Heights, Rabbi Velly Karp – Crown Heights, Rabbi Leibel Karp – Crown Heights and Rabbi Zalman Karp – Crown Heights.

So so sad to hear this news. Mrs. Karp was the epitome of an “ibergegebn” wife/mother. I remember her when she lived in montreal. Always on the giving end. Such tzidkus and such a fine woman.
BDE.
As a child growing up in Montreal, my brother lained the Torah in the minyan in Rabbi Karp’s house.
Every Shabbos after davening we had a kiddush with Mrs. Karp- delicious cakes, each piece was presented beautifully. We also had seltzer glass bottles (Kiri). Memories.
She was a gracious woman.
May Hashem bentch her family.
May Hashem give the family strength and comfort. Her children and grandchildren give so much to the Crown Heights Kehilla. May she be a guter beter for her whole family and all of klal Yisroel and help bang down the gates of golus and Moshiach should please come right NOW!
Hamakom yenakhem etekhem betokh shaar avelay tziyon viyrushalayim.
The Karps were pillars of the Montreal community. When my parents moved to Montreal in 1969, my father AH went to Rabbi Karp’s ZT”L shiur and advised my father to send his young daughters to Bais Rivkah where his daughters taught. Esti ( Karp) Loebenstein was the best the best junior high Novi teacher! We were also neighbors on the same street. May the entire Karp mishpocho be spared further sorrow.
End of an era.. may she be a malitz yosher for all klal yisroel

We all have the fondest memories of this sweetest, unassuming, generous truly chassidishe woman.
May her children and their children continue in her footsteps.
Dear Rochel, Esti and the whole family,
We are saddened to read of your mother’s Petira. I always remember her back in Montreal, as an elegant and gracious woman of special stature….an Isha tzinuah and a Dugmah Chaya to my generation!
May your wonderful memories serve to help you through this difficult time. BDE
