With sadness, we inform the community of the passing of Shmiel (Sidney) Russ, a longtime Crown Heights resident, just before Shabbos.
He was 88.
Shmiel is well known to all of us for his participation in all the community’s simchas and all the brachas he sincerely gave to everyone he felt had a need.
Shmiel was known for his extreme devotion to his family, and for caring for his sister and nephews for many, many years.
May he continue to be a good advocate for Klal Yisroel, and may he have a lichtacha place in Gan Eden.
His levaya will pass by 770 at 10:45 Sunday morning.
Baruch Dayan Ha’emes – Shmiel HaCohen ben Kalman.
Does he have anyone saying Kadish for him?
Is someone arranging for this ? I know Lubavitch Youth takes care of this in “normal ” times. Please let’s make sure it is done.
Boruch Dayan Emes. He brought so much SIMCHA W HIM WHEREVER HE WENT!!!

Always eager to help another person.
He was also a military Veteran I believe
Moshiach NOW !
Sidney was a good good man.
He took such good care of his sister , he was so sweet and would bless everyone he saw . He should have an Aliyas neshama
was he who used to gives brachos??
he gave me a bracha to have children a few months after i got married. and after i gave birth when i met him again i told him so, and than he said, now you shoulld have a girl and BH i had. he looks like a hiden tzadik
After we had our first boy, he gave me a Bracha and said now you’ll have a girl. I told him, but my wife wants another boy. He paused, looked at me, shrugged his shoulders and said, so you’ll have another boy. And we did!
This happened to us more then once and to many others
Sidney was a Cohen who proudly bentched Yidden.
How can we arrange Kadish for him? How does one arrange this ?
Sydney was a Korean war veteran
The Military Gives Burial Benefits, Moshiach Now”
For many years R’ Shmiel was a Shamash in Lefferts Shul, he would also open the mikveh every morning.
He always has such a nice smile.
For a couple years I gave a shiur Gemara in 701 Empire and he would come every week.
He loved to help people
May his Neshoma have a great a Aliya.
He will be greatly missed.
He was most definitely a Tzadik.
Such a nice, caring and kind man!!

Brought Simcha to those he met!
May we be zoche to see him at the greatest Simcha of all, in a guf gashmi with Moshiach in Eretz Yisroel
He used to tell me when he needed something from Hashem he would use the name Tatti when asking for it ‘because a Tatti will always give if he can and Hashem can always give’ Dear Sidney please ask our Tatti to blow His shofar heralding the revelation of Moshiach now
BDHE ALL THESE FAMOUS PEOPLE PASSING AWAY, JUST PROVES THAT MASHIACH IS ON THE WAY. P.G.
Very special Yid!!
Worked for years with R.Kalman Shuchat another of the special Jews of Kan Tziva.
Decades ago, late at night, Rabbi Shuchat obm and Sidney moved our things into a Crown Hts. basement apartment.
I had a young baby and a crib that needed to be put up. Sidney stayed and assembled it for me. So cheerfully. He was a one man welcoming committee. Will always be grateful.
Decades ago, late one night, Rabbi Shochat and Sidney moved my baby and I into Crown Hts. The crib needed to be assembled and Sidney so cheerfully stayed to do it for me. Sidney was a one man welcoming committee. My baby slept well and i never forgot this kindness.
When sholom rubashkin and polard were in jail .
Sidney always told me you will see they will be out of jail .
Our Tata loves his children and will free them .
He blessed so many people to have children and they did .
He worked in the library for the fridke Rebbe and got brochos from him .
He would never tell me what the fridke Rebbe told him .
A hidden tzadik he was .
Hashem hashem we need to end this golus
He told me many times he was a grandson of the Baal Shem Tov and Reb Nachman of Breslev.
Every time I met him at a shalom zochor he would bless me with children. “This year you will have a son”!
After my 5th boy in a row I tried avoiding him at the next Sholom zochor.
As he inched closer to me I responded “Sydney! I have 5 boys already I want a girl!”.
Why didn’t you say so? And he went on to give me a wonderful brocho for a girl.
Sure enough my 6th child was a girl!
May his memory be a blessing to our community and klal Yisroel!
BDE!
My father was doing work in the library in 1986 he did not get the key. The work had much to do with the court case. But the Rebbe instructed the Mazkirus that Sidney who was working for my father at the time, could have the key. People find this hard to believe, but the Rebbe trusted him implicitly. When my father approached him about looking at some of the seforim, he said “the Rebbe gives me permission”. During the work he accidentally drilled through 770s water main (which Sholom Ber Goldstein fixed). Dispite the massive amount of water spraying… Read more »
