Jenniffer González-Colón, a Republican who backs President-elect Donald Trump, was sworn in in a large ceremony on January 2 as Puerto Rico’s new governor.
A large Chabad menorah greeted participants as they arrived at the incarnation celebrations on the front lawn of the seaside Capitol building, a historical landmark that houses Puerto Rico’s Senate and Congress.
It stood there throughout Chanukah, bringing light and a message to all who saw it. This year, with special permission, it remained in place through January 2, despite other holiday decorations being removed due to the inauguration.
Rabbi Mendel Zarchi, director of Chabad of Puerto Rico, offered the invocation. He opened by pointing to the Menorah and mentioning that all 8 branches were lit because the inauguration was on the final day of Chanukah.
He then addressed the crowd in Spanish, wishing the new administration to be a guiding light for all.
“The menorah’s presence in such a central and historic location symbolizes the message of Chanukah — bringing light and hope to all,” shared Rabbi Zarchi.
