The first batch of humanitarian cargo provided by the Global Jewish Assistance and Relief Network Foundation and the World Congress of Bukharian Jews (USA) in the amount of more than $330,000 arrived at the Islam Karimov International Airport in Tashkent, the Dunyo news agency reported.
The cargo was sent in order to facilitate the creation of a fund of medical supplies for medical institutions in Uzbekistan in connection with the new waves and mutations of the coronavirus.
The shipment included more than 165,000 N95 respirator masks, 4,000 KN95 masks, and 100,000 three-layer masks. The masks will be sent to the appropriate medical institutions in Uzbekistan.
The delivery of the first consignment of cargo from New York to Tashkent was done with the financial support of businessmen Lev Leviev and Furkat Radjabovs.
“The situation with the coronavirus pandemic, which has swept the entire globe, leaves none of us indifferent,” says Furkat Radjabov. “We are pleased to contribute to the delivery of the first batch of medical masks provided by the American Foundation to our country.”
The cargo was also formed and sent with the support of Uzbek diplomats from the Consulate General in New York and the Embassy in Israel.
“I am happy to send humanitarian aid to Uzbekistan, because in 1944 my parents met and got married in Tashkent, where they were evacuated during the Second World War,” said Rabbi Lazer Avtzon, director of the Global Jewish Assistance and Relief Network.
“Today, for the first time, we are sending a large consignment of humanitarian cargo to Uzbekistan to help fight the coronavirus.
“This is an opportunity to thank the people of Uzbekistan, who gave shelter to my parents many years ago, thanks to which they had a chance to survive during the war years. We are very excited about the sending of humanitarian aid and hope that it will help many people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In the future, the Fund plans to continue the practice of sending humanitarian aid to Uzbekistan. In recent years, we have been working closely with the World Congress of Bukharian Jews, which is also committed to comprehensive support and solidarity with the Uzbek people,” Rabbi Avtzon said.
