Hatzalah of Crown Heights, in consultation with senior community physicians and members of the Department of Health, has issued facts and instructions for the Crown Heights community in response to the spread of coronavirus in the neighborhood.
Hatzalah confirmed that there are 3 confirmed cases in the neighborhood all of whom have had “extensive interaction at multiple places,” they said. “Thus a large segment of the community have already been exposed.”
They also said they have seen a sudden spike in “flu like” symptoms in young adults.
In response, they have issued a set of instructions which should be adhered to for the safety of the community.
“The Department of Health has advised us that ANYONE with a flulike illness, should be presumed to have COVID-19, and further culturing is to stop at this time,” they said.
“Nobody has antibodies to this virus, and thus according to current modelling the vast majority of people who have been exposed will come down with the illness.”
It is a highly infectious illness, spread by droplets and personal contact. Coughing, sneezing, etc. put the virus into an aerosolized form and can infect another person within 6 ft of the cough. The virus also survives to spread on hands and other surfaces. At this time we do not believe that the virus spreads in the general airspace within the room.
• The incubation period of the virus is from 3-14 days, with an average of 5 days. This means that once exposed, an individual will more than likely become ill 5 days later.
• It is possible that a person may be infectious just prior to becoming ill, that is before the onset of symptoms.
• This illness is different to influenza in that most people begin with mild symptoms which slowly progress over a period of days.
• The symptoms of this illness, Fever, sore throat, cough, body aches, diarrhea. (flu-like symptoms)
• The vast majority of patients (almost all, and most particularly children) will recover over a period of 5-7 days. 24 hours after full recovery they are presumed to be no longer infectious.
• There is a segment of the population, particularly those with chronic underlying illness, are immunosuppressed, have pulmonary disease, and the elderly and infirm, who are at higher risk of developing severe illness, requiring hospitalization.
• If an infected individual, does NOT start to recover around day 5-7, and specifically if they become more ill, or develop respiratory symptoms, they are at increased risk of severe disease and need to be evaluated, preferably in an emergency room, where an Xray can be performed, lung function assessed, and the patient admitted if necessary, for advanced care. Of course, any individual who is severely ill from the outset, with more than a flulike illness, would require evaluation.
• There is no treatment widely available for COVID-19, certain antiviral drugs are being tested at this time, and used in some experimental settings.
INSTRUCTIONS:
• Anyone who feels at all ill, should stay home, and not mingle at all.
• As there has been such a wide exposure at this time, everyone is possibly infectious, and social distancing should be practiced. How this relates to Minyanim etc, the Beis Din will decide.
• If you or your children, become ill, consider it as if you are infected, and stay home. The only reason to seek medical attention is if there is a strong reason to believe that what you are ill with is something else (i.e. you have severe abdominal pain etc.), or your mild flu like illness gets worse and not better after a number of days.
• The elderly and infirm are at high risk, practice strict social distancing from this group.
DO NOT FORGET SIMPLE HYGIENE, YOUR FACE, COUGH INTO YOUR ELBOW, OR TISSUE.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. SLEEP, EAT WELL, LIMIT ALCOHOL, GET SOME MILD EXERCISE TO KEEP YOURSELVES AS RESILIENT AS POSSIBLE.
THERE IS NO NEED FOR PANIC!

Rabbonim say listen to the medical professionals and Hatzala says listen to the Rabbonim… In the meantime, hundreds maybe thousands in our community will be going to shul on Shabbos and mingling with people who were exposed. Someone needs to have the courage to shut down the shuls before this inevitable happens r”l.
Did you read the letter ? It says no reason to panic . It does not say to close all the shuls . Plain and simple .
It clearly said the Beis din will decide about Minyanim. But the Beis Din said listen to the medical professionals. Neither have the courage to do what all reasonable companies in this city are doing and shutting down large gatherings. That’s not panicking, it’s doing the only logical thing under the circumstances.
The elderly need our help. How do people help the elderly and others in need without passing it on. Are masks and handwashing sufficient?
Please check on your elderly neighbors/family. Encourage hand washing, change towels, or use paper towel. Where possible, leave things at the door. But if needed, a healthy person should go in and help. Make sure they have things to do, read, etc. Depression is not healthy!
Check on them daily, and pay attention to symptoms
Is going to mikvah still ok?
Dear Mikvah.org community, שתחי’ As the world is in panic mode due to national spread of COVID-19, it’s important for all of us to take proper measures to ensure the safety of our families and those around us. Please follow the CDC protocols and tap into your local community guidelines on how best to protect yourselves from bodily harm. More notably, it is a good time to strengthen our spirituality. Whenever there was worldly chaos, the Rebbe would instruct us to double up with Torah and Mitzvos. We all know the importance of Taharas Hamishpacha, and the urgent role it… Read more »
Is there any reason to cancel our cleaning help? We need them more than ever with pesach approaching. But we don’t know where they have been and a lot of them travel by train… please advise.
The cleaning ladies should be worried to come to you. Crown heights is having an outbreak. Thousands of locals were exposed. Why are we worried about where the cleaning lady is coming from?
Call the emergency room FIRST, and describe the symptoms so that emergency room staff can give instructions. The Center for Disease Control has information regarding hospital protocols to protect other patients and medical staff when admitting someone presenting with possible COVID-19.
Good Shabbos
is required. Please everybody just stop the panic and read up the appropriate info on the internet and act accordingly.
Don’t go to the mikva if you don’t feel well .
Ecpecialy if you have cold
Can we please stop hiding the names of those who tested positive. There should be absolutely no shame here. This is a virus and it’s not your fault that you got it. Why is the privacy of these individuals more important that the health of hundreds of people. Knowing who tested positive would really help contain this because individuals know who they were around and had contact with recently. PLEASE, IF YOU OR A FAMILY MEMBER OR ANYBODY YOU KNOW HAS TESTED POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS PLEASE LET THE COMMUNITY KNOW. THERE IS NO SHAME HERE. Why should Crown Heights be… Read more »
YOU ARE SO RIGHT!.
We need to know if we were in contact with these people.
The health department will notify known contacts without revealing names, which is illegal as medical info is legally private.
What you’re referring to is HIPAA which applies to the providers. My comment / request was to the patients and their families. This would save lives!
“The Department of Health has advised us that ANYONE with a flulike illness, should be presumed to have COVID-19, and further culturing is to stop at this time,” they said.
Look what Hatzolah and the Doctors have to contend with. This way if no one is tested than the statistics are lower and the DOH doesn’t help our medical professionals.
The DOH has basically washed their hands from this issue.
