Black hats and beards have always been a trademark for Lubavitchers and reporters have always described Shluchim as “bearded rabbis.” Now you have a chance to tell the world why we have them.
MSNBC is searching for stories with hair.
The 24-hour cable news channel in the United States and Canada will be featuring an article about the “Return of the beards.”
“Have you grown a mustache, mutton chops, goatee or other facial hair that you’re proud of? Share your photos and the hairy stories behind them! We’ll select the best images for publication,” they wrote.
An anonymous COLlive fan brought this to our attention and says that this “might be a great way to make a Kiddush Hashem.”
In Responsa 93, a commentary on the Yoreh De’ah legal code, the third Lubavitcher Rebbe ruled that shaving a beard is against Halacha.
In Leviticus, it is forbidden to shave with a razor. Forward writes that most Orthodox Jews have worked around this by shaving with scissors or an electric razor, but the Tzemach Tzedek said that any means of removing hair from a man’s face is forbidden.
The sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson insisted upon coming to the U.S. that “American is not different” and that Chassidim should grow beards.

I just heard a “mayse” this Shabbos, about the FR (it was probably mistaken for our Rebbe) said, the fact that Jewish hippies started growing beards — they may have thought is because of the trend — but truthfully, it’s since they have a neshama, and they are meant to have it (it’s only outwardly, they think there are other reasons).
Does anyone know the source? — This MAY be a good “point” to tell for the MSNBC idea.
