Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka’s yahrtzeit was commemorated at Bais Chana Academy High School for Girls in Orange, Connecticut with an incredible mother/daughter evening.
The decorations, coordinated by one of the mothers, set the tone for a beautiful atmosphere. The pathway to the entrance of this magical evening was lit with paper lanterns. A huge table centerpiece, created by the students, was a family tree festooned with gems, ribbons, and stickers. Beautiful photographs of mothers and daughters were included in the centerpiece, while the table was covered with delicious hors d’oeuvres.
The dining area was a spectacular scene with rose colored tables decorated with pearls, rose petals and candlelit chandeliers. Mrs. Sara Esther Crispe presented an inspirational talk entitled “When Giving is Receiving: The Mother/Daughter Bond.” Interspersed with stories and examples of the Rebbetzin’s life, it made everyone aware that a healthy relationship is made of both giving and receiving. A delicious catered dinner followed the presentation.
The evening continued, as mothers and daughters enjoyed a meaningful activity which was fun for everyone. Each mother and daughter had to decorate a cake based on one of the 12 pesukim. Plain chocolate cakes were topped with handmade people, trees, books, flowers, and hearts. Everyone then tried to guess which pesukim the other cakes represented. The cakes were taken home as a wonderful reminder of the evening.
However, the evening was not yet over. During a fabulous dessert, the mothers enjoyed watching the creative “ROOTS” presentations by their daughters. Knowing “where you come from” involves significant research and helps define who we are and what we hope to become. Bais Chana students proudly created a “ROOTS” presentation under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Devorah Leah Posner. Every girl was given one of the Rebbeim to research and the final result was a written report, poster, and a creative presentation. The presentations consisted of videos, songs, poems, displays and story tapes. Each girl’s originality and creativity were evident in all aspects of the project and presentations.
“The ROOTS project was an opportunity for our girls to learn about and gain an appreciation for the Rebbeim in a very meaningful way,” said Mrs. Bluma Hecht, Bais Chana principal. “Being able to present them to the mothers at such a special gathering left everyone feeling inspired and uplifted.”
