With the start of the new academic year, The Geshem Center announces its first wave of adult education courses for the Fall of 2012, part of Geshem’s ongoing commitment to help enrollees prepare for a lifelong career. Registration is now open for six courses that will begin on September 4th:

BUSINESS AND FORMAL WRITING
We all use formal writing in many forms throughout the day, from preparing sales pitches and presentations to sending a quick email to a friend or colleague. Our professionalism is portrayed in our writing. But how do you effectively communicate your message? How do you engage your reader in a manner that is effective, compels the reader to respond, and helps maintain and enhance your personal and professional relationships?
This eight-week business and formal writing course—offered in conjunction with YQ Media—equips you to reach your audience in a powerful way. Formal writing is a valuable skill that improves with practice and experience. By the end of the course, participants are able to utilize their multiple pieces of written work to help them pursue a new career or enhance performance in their current position.
Time: Thursdays, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

GRAPHIC DESIGN
Art has the power to communicate ideas, inspire and evoke emotion, and to transform the world around us. In this eight-week course, participants learn the fundamentals of web and print design, including color theory, perspective and typography. This fast-paced class incorporates real-world exercises, enabling students to develop critical thinking skills associated with visual legibility, utilizing Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. By course conclusion, students are able to exhibit portfolios based on the skills they have learned.
Time: Sundays and Thursdays 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

QUICKBOOKS
QuickBooks is the leading accounting and financial management software used by accountants, bookkeepers and financial managers. This course is an intensive program with the goal of providing each participant with the tools needed to work in the accounting department of any business or industry. It covers the fundamentals of accounting, as well as the details and nuances involved in keeping proper financial records.
Knowledge of and experience with this program is sought after by most employers seeking to fill accounting and bookkeeping positions. By the end of this course, all participants have working knowledge of QuickBooks, to be listed as a skill on their resumes.

This course helps students develop the reading and thinking skills required in all five areas of the GED test. They include Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Literature and Math. Geshem Center’s GED program is a comprehensive preparatory program of classes for men of all ages and educational levels. Each student is individually assessed, and lessons are customized to match his skills and abilities. This ensures that each student is adequately prepared to take and pass the GED test.

MICROSOFT OFFICE
The Microsoft Office software program includes many valuable platforms used in daily life. In this course we cover a full array of Microsoft Office programs, including Microsoft Word—a program for creating and editing written documents; Microsoft Excel—a spreadsheet program which can be used for accounting or database purposes; Microsoft Outlook—a program used for email and maintaining contacts; and Microsoft PowerPoint—a program used for creating presentations and slides.
Knowledge of each of these programs is a valuable skill, and a requirement for most office positions. By the end of this course, participants have working knowledge of several Microsoft Office programs, to be listed under “Computer Skills” on their resumes.

For those of us not in CH, or people in Ch who aren’t able to make it to these classes, there’s a website called Udemy.com which offers similar classes, online. Right now the Microsoft Office training package(Word, Excel, PP,Outlook and Access) is going for 60$, on livingsocial.com
These courses will not get someone a career, they are merely skills that might get you a job if you are missing those specific skills.
We need real solutions, real career counseling, and real accredited courses or programs in this community.
