As Shabbos ended around the world, the alarming news from Bulgaria spread quickly throughout the world. The home of the Chief Rabbi of Bulgaria had gone up in flames! Rabbi Yosef Solomon, his wife Tammar and their ten young children were left stranded in the bitter Bulgarian cold.
They had spent an uplifting Shabbos day celebrating Yud Tes Kislev with their congregants when the shrill sound of fire-truck sirens pierced the air. A fire had begun in their home and had quickly spread through the entire structure.
Thank G-d, nobody was hurt, but aside for the Shabbos clothes they were wearing nothing was left of their material belongings.
Young Yitzchak Solomon was excited to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah in just two weeks. But now, he watched as the fire consumed everything that had been prepared for the big day. His new hat, suit, Tefillin — everything turned to ashes.
Rabbi Solomon and his wife have been Shluchim serving the Jewish community of Bulgaria for twenty years. As a young Israeli couple hailing from Rishon Litziyon and Yerushalayim, they packed their bags and set out for a new and strange land, one that had only recently been freed from the shackles of Communism. Quickly, they got to work rebuilding Jewish life.
In light of the terrible catastrophe, a group of family and friends have established a fund to help the family. The Head Shluchim of Europe have called for Shluchim and Anash the world over to lend a hand and help the Solomon family celebrate Chanukah with a proper roof over their heads, in a warm and happy home.
